Hi sifus (etsuko, goldfries and many others).
This thread has been a goldmine.
I am just starting out in the web design industry.
I wanted to do a portfolio, but sadly I do not have previous work to show, thus I only came up with this.
http://boonwebdesign.com/ Any advice for someone to do freelancing without previous work to show?
Should I just start doing websites for free?
Also, looking from the view of prospective client/employer, anyway for me to improve the website?
Sincerely hungry.
With the market having too many designers and developers today..
1. What makes you different than the rest ?
2. What's your core expertise, or focus ? UX ? UI ? Frontend ? Backend ? System design?
3. Once you've found your answer to #1 and #2, start creating side projects of your own to demonstrate how are you different (1) and why you're more specialized (2).
The website you've got now communicates that you're looking for a job, not clients. To make it less like you're looking for a job, remove sections like employment and education.
Never do websites for free just because you're starting up. It leaves a bad impression to the industry. Instead, charge a minimum rate which you'd think is worth your time and expertise. Personally, aything below RM500 to me is ridiculous.
I hope this helps.
