tsk tsk tsk

Actually Im okay with the cheap people who always wanna pay cheap in web development freelance business
but aa... Yea, he also must be ready to get the cheap ar, without complaining want to change this color...
This header... This banner... And so on...

The most important thing people should know and the fact in web development, company-to-company
business is really really expensive. That is why people are trying to resort to freelancer as freelance-to-company
business is super cheap... But yea, if you ask the professional website for RM150.00, its kind of... WTF???!!!

As I said, Im a professional programmer and ready for a professional development but people (the client) also - must act professional.
Its not like Im going to charge a Petronas / Shell / Exxon Mobil price or something. Just relax. I understand
you as a human.

Just asking. Nowadays...

Do blogs / websites which depend on adverts to make income... Can sustain a living anymore?

I mean... You can quit your day job already just based on your blog / site's advert income...

p/s: Well, for sure its different cases if it is an artist / public figure / giant company's blog or site... Im talking about the normal civillians.

I just read a few posts on pg 1 and jumped right here to the last pg (I promise I will read the in-between when I have time.

Problem with the web design industry in M'sia is... most so-called designers are more techies than designers.

Currently I am looking for a real web designer but have yet to find one. Client has huge budget but I have yet to find a suitable candidate.

Website designers are essentially designers, with the core competency to build websites. Their range of knowledge in programming determines their level of handling complicated development projects, which in this case - lelong or mudah.

The question of whether it's complicated depends on what features / functions you're adopting from the 2 references.

Many times the client would say "I want something like X or Y". And that's very bad, because they don't have an expectation of what's inside X or Y, leaving a black hole of uncertainty and puts the designer / developer in a difficult position to assure you it would come out like X or Y.

If you don't want to be that type of client, look into drafting a document with the functions / features to share with the designer or developer. This way, requirements are made clear and both parties may provide the needed information.

There isn't a fixing rate. The designer decides their rate and the client decides whether they're worth the rate or can afford the rate for the said designer.

1. Basic costs are domain name, website hosting and payment gateway (if it's an online store). Other possible costs may be maintenance and support. Further than this, depending on what you're outsourcing, it could range to content writing, artwork creation, photography.. etc.

2. There isn't a market price. It's what you're comfortable paying - person and affordability.

This is a demanding field now days . You guys are lucky.
Like to share with you some info, from real market side and from employer perspective. Now days a new fresh grad is getting 3k- 3.5k starting for a programmer (programming language or / and web developer).

People who have good knowledge in web developing and mobile developing are in demand. if you have some experience, then even better. (please note that; your freelance, or part time work is also your experience).

There are always people looking for talent, companies are searching candidate with skills.

Hello everyone,

I am not sure where should I post. I need help to get some jobs here in Malaysia. I am from Hong Kong and got married with Malaysian and carrying a spouse visa, decided to staying in Malaysia because I like the life here. I am a designer with 8 years experience, and graduated in the US university with Media Art and Japanese major. I started to build website with HTML 5, CSS 3 and Jquery plugins about a year ago. I used to help building website with Flash AS3 and some HTML about 7 years ago when I was in Hong Kong. Here is my website that I've just started : www.boscolostudio.com

I have been working for website design, photo editing, banner designs, company presentation / profile slides...etc. on and off in Malaysia for almost a year now. The pays are sometimes good and bad. But I am thinking to get a real job with stable income. So I have looked at some jobs online. They usually pay 2k to 3k as designer, 2.5k to 3.5k as a web designer and I found one more job I might be able to do is creative executive, 3k to 4k. (This position is a bit confusing, please let me know if you know about it smile.gif ) My questions is:

What is the best position for me in order to earn more money?

Or do you think that you would prefer working as a freelancer if you were me? maybe I just don't have the connections to search for freelance job?

Please give me advice or share smile.gif

Thanks,

Bosco Lo

As much as I shouldn't ask a question with another question, but I do have to ask this..

How much money do you aim to or must earn monthly?

A full-time job may have its stability, however it has its tradeoffs - working hours, salary amount.. while freelance also has its own opposite cons which are similar - working hours, variable salary..

Unless you're able to share the amount, only then would we be able to formulate a better answer that is strategic and realistic for this country which we reside. icon_rolleyes.gif

Hello, nice to meet you and thx for reply. Yes I like here because here is more relaxing and very nice food too. Gained much weight tongue.gif

I wish I could earn 3.5k to 4k per month for now. And yes, working in a company will kill most of my time. So I wish I could find more ways to get more freelance job. Or even any ideas that could earn money such as selling stuff.

And just now, I got a project which need me to give them quotation. Could you please tell me how much should I quote in Malaysia if I will build something like this one but exclude the forum and blog parts :

http://www.menclub.hk/

Is there any design group or studio that I could join?

Thanks smile.gif

It's not rush, it can be 1 to 2 months or even more. And I think the layout part should be ok. I know grid system and responsive stuff. Anything else you would suggest I may also need to be concern about?

The salary range you mentioned can be attained by working in an international advertising agency or some graphic design companies.

Of course, salary range is a negotation process between yourself and the employer. If the employer decides to start you from 2.5-3k, you could always ask why to understand their point of view for doing so. Unless you either have an ego or are already an established designer, then you negotiate a starting range from what you aimed.

I hope this information helps.

As for the quotation, I personally find these kind of "how much would a website like this cost" situation not very helpful - especially when there's a login. Because it may show the client is too lazy to draft a proper brief.

Anyway.. 1 topic we've always discussed in this forum is the price. There isn't a fixed price.

What I've always shared here is you'll have to find your estimate hourly rate. The calculation is based on your:

CODE
costs รท average time spent per project

For example.. costs = 1500, average time per project = 30 hours.. estimated hourly rate = 50

When you have an hourly rate, for any project which comes in, you gauge the amount of time you may need and use the hourly rate to give you an indication of price range.

Even if you're using a template and free modules, you would still use time to research, setup, configure and deploy. Time is money. wink.gif

Here are some other quick tips for you about the industry here:

1: There will always be someone cheaper.
You decide whether you want to work with the client.

2: Always ask for a deposit.
There have been many cases shared here where client requests for mockup(s) and not award the project to the person who've put in the effort.

3: Always practice B&W - agreements
Also, there have been many cases where client terminates halfway (for whatever reason), then decides to not pay for the work because they believe freelancers won't go to the trouble of seeking legal advice.

4: Never be misled by promises.
Some clients will sweet talk designers with "long term", "refer you clients" and etc. If they're really committed to what they say, put it in an agreement like #3.

Well, best of luck to you and happy holidays. biggrin.gif
