Hi, any sifu here is into cafe business? Can share share a bit how is the early startup and what important things that we should consider?
*
Question is, how much have you done your homework already? It's a bit lengthy if people were to spoon feed everything from A - Z.

At what stage you're at now & what are your obstacles?

I'm still a newbie with 0 experience in running a business but I've read some posts from the forum about how they manage their busines and etc. I not sure whether is it applicable to cafe business or not. These are some of my thoughts because im just in a planning stage with limited knowledge: ( please point out my mistake ya tongue.gif )

1) First have to register is SSM then open bank account blablabla...
2) Rent a shoplot- choose a location, depends on the targeted customer (students, youngsters and working adults etc), rental.
3) Renovation- depends on what type of cafe (medium range or something like mamak?)
4) Food provided- is it most of the cafe owner do know how to cook themself? Or they just hire chef to cook? If hire chef that means have to be very dependent on the chef?
5) Food supplier- find supplier for things such as steak, lamb, chicken, vegetables, fruits etc.

these are what in my mind now and I dont know whether is it in the correct direction. Please guide icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

There's no right or wrong, as long as it floats your boat.

I've met restaurant owners who doesn't know how to cook before.

I've met restaurants owners who buys their ingredient from hypermarkets

I've met restaurant owners who buys from suppliers.

There are some restaurant/cafe owners here in LYN, go look for them. Or else just go to your facourite restaurants & make friends with the boss.

Are you sticking with the business? What other products or service do you offer?
*
Nope. I am not doing them. There are huge range of product from the business, but two of them sells better than the rest. I am stupid enough to help the supplier educate people on how the thing work. (Because they don't promote the product in the market) And, I found that educating people very costly and time consuming.

cafe success rate only 10%...but maybe you are the 10...good luck.
your shop signature dishes/drinks must be outstanding, need to have wow factor, or else be a normal abc cafe, you will close down very soon like abc.....most importance factor to run a cafe is keep your cost low.....cutting the wastage or the best no wastage at all which unlikely.....
frankly speaking, in this few year time, a economic rice shop successful chance shall higher than a abc cafe...unless you got a wow factor....
which location you intend to start and why you choose this business? mind to share?

wangsa maju huge crowd for students and those lepak kaki....should not go for heavy proper meal as it will be very competitive for the area and the profit margin is not high enough to cover your expenses......
should go for light meal/snack target market.....but in the first place, your location must not too small or else your turn around of table may not be sufficient as everyone sit down for hours.....the survival of mamak is dollar per customer is little but they do have huge number of table to multiply it......
you should consider unique bakery cafe with nice coffee at half price of starbuck....plus the best can be work in 24 hours if do have some resources to support.
if you want , i can share some of the resources for it as i am actually planning such similar in JB....

i been in fnb for more than 20 years, go through fast food, cafe, kopitiam , food courts etc .......have learnt a lot through the process....so this just my humble opinion after considering many factor which unlikely can explain in few words.. you need to keep your cost lost, less wastage, strong signature products/services, customer return desire
Nowadays business environment is not as before, don't think of profits, think of cover over head...easily can cost u more than 20k per month

Thanks for your advice eric! But is it possible to make the price half of starbuck price? I have seen some post in mudah.my going to rent their shoplot for 4.5k/month. As u said, we must provide enough tables to fit in more customer that means 1 shoplot might not be enough so only the rental already cost 9k/month. Btw, may I ask normally what is the profit margin in fnb? Thanks
