Mids - tie, but I feel both of them has certain hollowness in some vocals (both uses polypropelene material).

no wonder some tracks sounded weird.. hmm.gif maybe some burn-in might "cure" this problem a little.. sweat.gif

Some models of MX5021 has static hiss, changing the cable helps a lot. Altec speakers are notoriously known for static hiss. There is one more speaker I feel is more balanced and worth looking, the CS21 (disadvantage is that it has no remote control and no treble adjustment). But none of these models can match 621 and 641 models.

I'd agree there's a considerable amount of hiss emitted form the tweeter, especially listened from less than 1 meter distance.. I wonder where you get the information that changing cable can help with the hiss? hmm.gif notworthy.gif

There's a lot of guys who had changed the MX5021 supplied cable with a thicker one. The supplied cable is very thin and picks interference easily. But there are some more factors affecting static hiss like motherboard and sound card. You have to experiment for this. I changed the supplied cable not because of hiss but to reduced the high pitched brightness of the speakers (making it a little bit warm). Also, the burn-in didn't solved the hollowness of the mid vocals. Some songs still sounds hollow in mids but some songs sound really great.

Hi guys, bought myself a set of MX5021(black colour) yesterday at Digital Mall. I heard from you guys that the cables can be changed. Is it the cable that connects the satellites to the speakers? I'm planning to change this cable, any good recommendations(any good cable, as long as it gives better and significant increase in performance tongue.gif) , and also where to purchase these cables?

Also, the cable that is DIYed by PcWork, is it the cable that connects the subwoofer to the soundcard?

Thanks, burning in my speakers now, using edifier's burn-in tool when I'm not listening to music. biggrin.gif

You can buy cheap speaker cables in any shop that sells computers and speakers. Make sure it is quite thick so there's a lot of shielding involved. If you want a branded and reasonably priced, try Canare or Belkin cables.

To Aquanox28: Yes it is the cables that connect from the sub to the sats.

No need to change ADA cables (unless broken). Those were the days that Altec makes quality products. The ADA series is like glory days for Altec. Now they have MX, VS, FX that has so many problems. Yeah, burn-in is for new speakers only, like a heating up period. Sound card.....how about Philips Aurilium, don't know the price now, but it's quite cheap.

I give MX5021 the edge. FX4021 - if you try to listen to this speaker, you'll notice that it sounds flat, nothing great (same with FX6021). It is the default setting - flat. However, once you hit the loud button in the control pod (loud increases the treble and bass setting), then you will appreciate this speaker better. MX5021 is the reverse, it is a bright speaker, must decrease the treble. That's the reason most people will immediately jump for MX5021 because it places much emphasis on the high notes. If I breakdown them:

Highs - MX5021 is ahead (decreased treble).
Mids - tie, but I feel both of them has certain hollowness in some vocals (both uses polypropelene material).
Lows - tie, both are not punchy, just low frequency sound but not boomy like the VS4121 model. FX4021 claims that it has isobaric subwoofer to make it stronger, but I can't feel it, something could be wrong with their design.

Some models of MX5021 has static hiss, changing the cable helps a lot. Altec speakers are notoriously known for static hiss. There is one more speaker I feel is more balanced and worth looking, the CS21 (disadvantage is that it has no remote control and no treble adjustment). Has anyone went to Ace Hardware to see the speaker cables that they are selling? It's around RM2.60/m. Is it ok for our speaker?

haha... true... tested MX5021 before i bought CS21... and here is some review and comparison of both speakers...

http://www.behardware.com/articles/493-12/...er-systems.html

according to this website, overall sound quality CS21 get 8 and MX5021 got 6.5... but highest is FX6021 which are much more expensive...

anyway, shinjun, im using a SB audigy 4... i don't really recommend it but it comes with a remote and its sound much better than a intergrated SC...

Those reviews are very subjective.. maybe the reviewer just doesn't like the boom-boom-boom bass of MX5021..? plus there's definately a few noticable flaws with it.. like audible hissing noise from tweeter when listened close distance, and low rumble noise from the woofer when put in standby mode.. whistling.gif
