if you are just a diploma holder and dont wish to proceed to degree qualification,
i suggest you take extra course to upgrade your IT skills to higher level.

try SAP, it will reward you handsomely. you can be SAP consultant with
monthly income at least 8K and above not inclusive of allowances and travel benefits.

your cobol, C++, all these programming languages is outdated, try to hands on over new languages like Lotus, SAP, RPG, or whatever giant mainframe system.

this least skills might bring you a job as analyst in banking industry.

or be a business analyst.

Good luck

I have to disagree on some of your points:
1. COBOL is still pretty much used in the banking industry, there's even a .net version of it
2. C++/C has and will continue to be an important language. Not many languages can beat it in terms of speed and capability
3. SAP consultancy takes time, effort and a lot of money to learn. And I'm starting to feel that too many people are trying to get into it.

If there is some banks still using COBOL, you have to tell me which bank,
i will tackle that bank as vendor.

yeah, i might be wrong by pointing out only the good ones and cast away the bad ones.
some language might be in good use for certain criteria, some not.

The reason is, the thread starter were asking for his future in job, thats why only
the good ones will be shown here for his best of luck.

SAP, all you need is 1 year to learn up, you're starting to feel many people are trying to get in, that's right. as said, msia facing shortage of SAP fellas.

COBOL is still pretty much needed in banking system. The company i'm working in right now, is a Credit card solution provider.....and our backbone is written in COBOL.
As far as i'm concern, til now, Citibank are still using lotsa cobol programmer, not sure for it's core banking system though.
and SAP, everybody is getting their heads into this...ABAP, MM, PP....not tryna say your point is incorrect but mayb the thread-starter can use some lil perspectives here.

Try to give yourself more exposure other than only programming.
U ought to pick up other skillsets, so that in the future, u may be promoted as project manager

OCBC is still on COBOL IIRC and i believe it's not the only one.

Again, I have doubts about SAP. Just like every other "in" thing in the past (IT, CCNA, biotech etc), people (or can I say fools) rush in without knowing what they're getting themselves into.

Do a research on what's needed and then plan from there on.

There're quite number of financial institutions that are still attached to COBOL due its fast processing.

C++ outdated?? I think it'll NEVER be outdated. There's now .NET version of C++ and it's used in lots of application. Frankly, i think here in Malaysia, we don't have enough of REALLY GOOD C++ programmer...that is why we can't compete with western countries in areas of latest technology and software becoz we're simply lagging too far behind.

For the threadstarter, i think you need to know WHAT INDUSTRY you want to get in. For Banks and some insurance companies. COBOL is still the mainstream. If you intend to go into that industry, then it'll help to have knowledge of COBOL to start with.

If your interest is high tech software, internet, telecommunication, yadda yadda, then please don't waste your time with COBOL.

As for SAP, i last heard we've had like several thousands of em SAP consultant...is it still hot?? I'm not sure. Any SAP consultant here??

Cheers.

I think to answer your questions, how easy is it for you to find a job, I would have to say that all your college and diploma projects come in handy. If you have some good work samples I think it should be relatively easy to bad a job.

As for salary, I wont be so optimistic about a diploma. A degree holder takes around RM1.5 - RM1.8K. Diploma maybe only RM1200. BUT if you have good projects I think you can try to demand RM1.8K.
