QUOTE(azimut @ Oct 1 2014, 01:05 PM)
Hi Guys,
I hope I am posting it on the correct thread, forgive me if I have posted wrongly.

I was hoping for some help with a few of my questions.

1) I am looking for a system to back up photos/videos from handheld devices, for the household. My family have about 8 devices, a mixture of iOs and Android devices.
Is there a system where it can automatically download all the new photos and videos into the storage?

2) I know we can set different users, does that mean that I will not be able to see photos of other devices? (Example: I can't see photos my sister took)

3) Also, I was thinking of having that unit to store some songs and movies to stream to the Tv (maybe using DLNA or I could get a WDTV or something similar). I am a bit confused to how much Processing power I need, I don't think I will have more than 2 TV's being watched at the same time.

4) I can't decide between 1,2 or 4 bay system, I would probably need about 3TB of storage space.

5) Finally, I was told that the RAID is not a backup, so maybe I should buy two of them devices and have it to Mirror each other?

Thanks in advance! blush.gif

It seems most have answered most of your question, I'll add to your 5th.
RAID is definitely not a backup, as if you corrupt your data, RAID can't recover that for you, so you will need another device for it.
You can plugin any external hard disk or media for backup purpose, it has the USB option so any USB media is usable, pendrive, USB hard disk, etc.
You can use this method to backup your precious things that you find to be critical and you can't lose it.
Another way is Cloud storage, there's free and paid options, choose those that has good history and stick with it for your critical data backup, that way you can have multiple copies any where.

So to summarize, you can backup your data through the USB port (pendrive, external hard disk) and at the same time, backup again to Cloud storage (reliable one).

Thanks for your reply, still have questions though hehe.

For 1) If it is cloud based, doesn't that mean if I delete a photo/video on the handheld device, it would also delete on the NAS itself?
Thanks for your reply, if I use an external media (pen drive or ext hdd) as a back up, if the NAS (not the HDD) spoiled and I buy a new one, would it be as easy as pluging the external media and everything would be back to normal?

Because from what I have researched, it doesn't do that, best is I get two of the same NAS and if one spoil I can just unplug that and everything is back to normal.

Ps. I am trying to avoid external cloud storage.

Thanks
*
For your question about 1), If you mobile device is sync with your NAS through Internet, it's basically does something like iCloud, you delete yours, it'll sync with the NAS, so NAS's side will delete as well, which what your backup is for when you accidentally did so with important files.

External media is usually manual, means you do manual copy pasta to your external device, I'm not sure if Synology NAS has auto backup to USB media function though, worth a little time to do little research on this. hmm.gif

If your NAS is completely failed, there's a way to "migrate" your hard disk to a new NAS.

I see, but I actually want something whereby, the NAS would just pull new pictures/videos over the minute the handheld device connects to my home network (my wifi). I want the NAS to be the back up itself.

Thanks for the link, I will look at the tutorial when I have the time.

Have a look at this article, I think it covers most of the Apple's user network features.

But the tutorial left me a few doubts because it was on how to swap the drives from one working drive to another working one, it did not mention if the source NAS was spoiled or anything.
I have been reading through smallnetbuilder.com and quote...
Meaning the author is suggesting having two of the same NAS....

Thanks guys for being patient with me  blush.gif
*
Ah, that, if you going to migrate to a new NAS, basically it's either the old one is dead or you're expanding to more bays.
Of course if you can afford to run 2 NAS at the same time, your quote from smallnetbulder is the most efficient and fastest way to recover from lost in under a minute (if you know what you're doing).
I don't think any home users is rich enough to mirror an entire NAS just for backup. sweat.gif
Unless you're relying on the NAS for critical works at home, then probably you can do that, just for the sack of recover without the needs of going through the trouble of re-setup a new NAS and re-building the whole RAID setup. Fuiyo.. drool.gif

Actually, @KidsCode mentioned something about Kodi and I do not need a powerful (in terms of CPU) NAS? What if I am connecting the NAS to a switch and to a DLNA abled TV, would I still not need a powerful NAS?
*
Yes, basically DLNA allow streams input only and it does not process the video and audio by itself, for this you needs a NAS capable of process and stream your video content to DLNA TV, higher bitrate video will have a hard time if the NAS is underpowered.
If you already has a normal TV, you can just purchase another media player with network capability, I think it would be a cheaper option compare to NAS that can stream your video content, media player can be range from 200+ and above depends on your features requirement.

Anyone here using DLink DNS320L? I am using it together with a 4 Mbps Streamyx because Unifi is not available where we live.

When I run the p2p, I noticed that my Internet slowed, sometimes so bad until I cannot access Google / Facebook. I suspect it is the number of connectivity to the peers. I even set the bandwidth control to 400kb but even with that, I cannot even reach the NAS with it's IP address sometimes - can reach also cannot logon.

Any thing we can set as a counter measure?
*
More question, all these probably more to network than NAS though.
1. You know that 4Mbps is 400KB/s max right? You're basically set the maximum speed already, it'll just utilize all the bandwidth.
2. What's the BT setting? Maximum torrent download, upload, maximum peers per torrent, etc.
3. Can you get proper ping reply from the NAS when you cannot login to its control panel? (ping x.x.x.x)

Thanks for sharing the troubleshooting.

1. Even if I enable 1 torrent download at 200kb max also got problem.
2. Max download = unlimited, max upload = unlimited, cannot set max peer per torrent which I think is the culprit of the problem
3. I will test this when I encounter the issue again.

Based on answer 1 above, I conclude it is the max peer per torrent that is causing this on the DNS320L.
*
1. I think this should be fine but No.2.
2. Is this number of simultaneous running torrents? Or Global bandwidth? Can you set to only run 1 torrent only at a time?

Even with 1 torrent of small bandwidth setting, if you run 10 torrents at a time also can max out your bandwidth and possible jam your NAS due to overload, try to run 1 torrent a time to check if it happen again. wink.gif

As in I stopped all torrent files except 1 running at 200kb while I am on a 4Mbps plan, will also congest my network.

yes, will try out QoS when I get back today. I am on Streamyx Riger DB120WL.
*
oh... didn't know until I read the last line... doh.gif
Best to change to a better modem/router, as the Riger may not have enough power to process all the heavy connectivity from your BT client thus hang the whole Internet, but if you experiencing the NAS hang as well, that's different issue again. sweat.gif
You can, try to flash the firmware of that Riger to better utilize the hardware (from TPLink).

Follow the guide at your own risk, just prepare some budget so you can get new one if this (save some money method) fail.

im planning to get one NAS. which brand/model is good budget, user friendly, value for money?
another question the hdd used in this NAS is in NTFS system?
im using this system mainly for my media - videos and musics
wanna run in raid too. too backup my stuff
*
Another mis-conception of "backup", RAID =/= backup, RAID only redundancy for hard disk fail-over purpose.
If you wants backup, it's another type of media, be it same or other, hard disk, DVD-R, BD-R, etc. to be kept at somewhere else safe and backup from the NAS from time to time.
All NAS uses Linux file system, and each of their own way of implement it, Synology has its own for maximize file storage.

i need small and power saving...
if use freenas mean using pc as nas and that generate heat and high energy usage...
-------------------------------------
i may use wd red or purple drive as the price range between green and red/purple not far....
*
That depends on your hardware specs, I'm using normal C2D with downclock of the CPU to the lowest possible voltage and clocks to save power during idle, the rest is pretty much the hard disk and fans, pushing normal fans at 5v means lower speed and lower power consumption.
My PC driven NAS:
C2D E8400 @ 1.6GHz (0.95V)
Gigabyte G41M
2x 2GB RAM
4x HDD (500GB, 2x 2TB, 1x 3TB)
1x 120mm fan @ 12v (silent fan)
1x 90mm fan @ 5v
AVF PSU 450W (cheap but long lasting... 6 years and counting)
30~40W of power usage (a light bulb)

With this electrical usage, it's almost like the normal NAS with 4 HDDs, just a slight higher due to the mainboard circuitry and CPU.
More efficient CPU can be considered, such as AMD APU, Intel Atom. nod.gif

also try search for HP proliant server last time but no luck....

and as now i have less time to online, so this limited my time to search internet for advise / recommendation....

Well, I live in Kuching, Sarawak as well, most vendors didn't even able to supply me with those special MB and chassis that I want, most probably will save up and just hit the online store to fulfil my needs, but delivery will darn expensive, for sure!
I, myself is using Elite mATX chassis, with mATX mobo of 4x SATA, now this chassis only able to support 4 HDDs so I keep it that way for a bit longer while I hunt or wait for more hardware choices, there's always improvement, just local availability is scarce and too darn slow... doh.gif
For support of 8 HDDs or more, CM Centurion 590 capable of up to 12 HDDs with CM 4-in-3 accessories, the rest of the ports? Buy PCI-E SATA, couple them up... and you have extra ports, hardware RAID capable as well.

hmm.gif For the SATA card, normal one should do, 3TB supported as well, just need to update the firmware.
The one that I used for my office spare machine with Intel Atom is based on Silicone chipset, somehow reliable until now.
I just need to update the firmware and the 3TB drive appeared. wink.gif
But.. it's an old PCI SATA card though.. haha... slow SATA1 speed.. sweat.gif

If you don't mind online shopping, Ebay or Amazon is good place to source for PCI-E Sata card, some offer PCI-E x4 for 4-ports, around RM100~120 not including postage.
Locally not likely to have stock all the time due to demand, which is why sometimes I bought stuff higher than normal price and risk the warranty.

Add:
A bit curious myself so I searched around Amazon and Ebay, found the Amazon current exchange rate is way too steep, but the reliability is almost 100%.
For this product:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Hi-speed-SATA-3-...=item2c80ed0a1e
Amazon: After shipping RM18x (exchange rate 1USD = RM3.70)
Ebay: After shipping RM16x (Paypal exchange rate RM1 = USD0.274)

For me, if I can afford, I'll just stick with Amazon, much safer than risk the RM20+, 99% rated seller still can't be trusted nowadays.

All of these if you're seriously can't find any in Malaysia.

Or hell with all these trouble and just stick with normal NAS for least headache. wink.gif

Not enough SATA power? It can be easily expanded though, there's always molex to SATA.
Mobo's SATA port? Erm... never had such issue, may need to check if the port is loose or the cable end is spoilt. I have one cable which the connector is break so I tape it up and... continue to use sweat.gif no problem unless you unplug them a lot.
Amazon, not same address? Nah.. I use Debit Card, no problem so far, delivered twice already.
Just make sure the item has "This item ship to Malaysia" before you hit "Add to cart". If it's "This item does not ship to Malaysia", then you're out of luck, try other supplier or other closest one, take a few minutes to look for review or the chip's manufacturer, then decide.
You can use the Ebay link I posted just now to search at Amazon, use the item code should ease your search. wink.gif

RAM 8GB? Wow.. but the capability of running of USB pendrive is a plus, maybe the RAM is for caching and allow less write cycle on the pendrive (pendrive NAND has low write cycle, worst than lowest of SSD).
But with RAM so cheap nowadays... except if you still on the DDR2... doh.gif

UPS is recommended if you going to runs it 24/7, won't corrupt your file if you're writing files to it when it blackout, provide enough time for safely shutdown. wink.gif
System that runs 24/7 however require much attention especially the environment, heat, ventilation... well I think you should already aware of this.

Hi all, (being not so active in Lowyat recently)
I am planning to buy a Probox 8-bay HDD enclosure.
Product link here: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/794512

I have tried to search for compatible PCI-E eSATA card, but until I hit with few comments that some chipset does not support port multiplier, means it may not support the enclosure that I'm going to get (8-bay**).
Saw some reviews that only uses the eSATA port from the mainboard but mine does not has 1, and also saw few comments about support for up to only 4 drives in a single eSATA port. Now I wonder if the PCI-E eSATA card can fully support the 8-bay enclosure that I'm going to get.

Does anyone has experience on connecting 8-bay enclosure to 3rd part PCI-E eSATA card? And which chipset can support up to 8 drives from a single port (eSATA multiplier).

Thank you all for your time.
p/s: NAS cost up to 5x the price so I can't go that route with my limited budget.

hi guys, i just bought a Synology DS214Play, and i am now still learning on this field. I found out when i trying to download torrent with Download Station, the speed is got limited by strxxxx (i am on 8M plan), only 10~20kbps. Usually i can get full speed 1mbps by using other country vpn to download on desktop. May i know can i do the same with this NAS?
*
Erm, this could be considered as networking question but here you go.
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=173&t=79560

It's in the Control Panel > VPN, so I assume it's already pre-built inside the NAS itself.
Good luck setting it up.
The topic is about sharing the VPN connection on the NAS, so it's confirmed that NAS itself can setup as VPN client.

What's your RAID device? NAS? Server's RAID card?
I suppose the RAID controller able to tell you which HDD is giving the error and having issue, then you may go ahead and unplug the problematic HDD and replace it with another for re-build.

Budget conscious? If yes then DLink also has some options if you don't mind the support and performance.
