QUOTE(Halia @ Sep 12 2013, 10:49 AM) A silly question : Where & how you ride your folding? ride to town with friends to jalan2 cari makan indeed, n also ride to play football during the weekends cuz i find it hard to give up one over the other I've been cycling on-and-off with full size bike. I just have my first folding bike ride covering 20++ km on motor bike lane (16"). At the pit stop, I notice most of the guys have road bike crank installed, > 50 tooth. The casual conversation is centred on "how fast". On the ride, I tried follow those fast bikers but simply could not keep up ( my ave speed was 22km/h recorded by GPS), instead what I achieved is a faster credence vs riding full size bike. Thus, I arrived this premature conclusion: Folding is most suitable for urban 'jalan-jalan' and 'cari makan' purpose, or as a short distance commuter. For touring and speed, there are far better option available. I don't want the fellow riders to tembak me because of this. So would really like to know HOW and WHERE to you ride your folding. Keep up the ride QUOTE(etigge @ Sep 12 2013, 12:19 PM) I can't say for other riders but I can tell you my side of the reason why I ride a foldie. Me and wife and also on some occasion, my daughter were very avid mountain bikers. Pit stop for a few years because of financial worries, and then sold off all bikes. Fast forward, thinking of riding again. Then to get 3 mtb of the same quality as I had before is a huge investment. So, we thought of just getting a folding bike to quench our thirst for bicycling again. We got the first and rode around the house and then after the second one, me and wife started riding in Putrajaya and then joining others for rides. I am actually quite technical in bikes so I started tinkering with the foldies and got hooked onto it. u know, i was really keen on getting a mtb but as per the mtb thread, for rm2000 n less just choose the bike colour u like, components etc r not up to par for real mtbiking etc yada yada yada so i figure i'd save the money n get a foldie instead n see if i even like cycling.. n guess what, i nvr check out mtb again after that!I never now thought about mountain bikes anymore, just folding bikes! Getting together and ride and have meals together, sometimes staying at a resort, that's the idea of fun and the bike is just a medium to get us together! It all depends on your self, not with what others think. If you just want to workout, a machine in front of a large LCD TV will suffice. If you want to enjoy life like me and Sam do, ride with us. If you want to be competitive like those you are riding with, always talking about speed, then get a higher spec-ed and lighter bike and more expensive bikes and take lots of photos and record the distance and time taken to ride. glad i got my foldie instead of mtb, imagine a mtb with mudguard n all the accessories that would make it look..sissy? QUOTE(d1rTyd6n @ Sep 12 2013, 03:38 PM) I actually prefer right rides which is why I am looking for a bicycle headlamp and not a torch. But I do day rides too. My concern of getting a headlamp is that: how much will the difference be if I were to get one with 200 lumens vs those 1200 lumens? I know the power output is different hence the difference of lumens. But does the lumens affect the range throw of the lights? I mean, it would be good to get one with wide spill as well as a longer range. u can get the china-made one for about rm100-130 at bbsI had my eyes on Knog Blinder Road 2, just that the price is quite high, and the running time is pretty low for a headlamp. My budget for this *fingers crossed* will hopefully within a RM100 range, which after looking at various posts on TB, ebay, etc, is very much unlikely as those products are all over RM100. i just bought 1 recently n it's the newer version i think, where there's a cap for u to tighten n secure the cables between headlight n the battery pack QUOTE(X-LaW @ Sep 12 2013, 06:32 PM) a heads up, it dsnt fold as compact as the other so u might find it a bit less convenient to lug aroundThis post has been edited by 2kia: Sep 12 2013, 07:01 PM |

QUOTE(d1rTyd6n @ Sep 12 2013, 08:12 PM) this is exactly what i got, as posted in of the post earlierpretty solid, full brightness can go up to 2 hrs before it dims a little bit n finally goes off around the 3 hr mark for the 50% brightness mode, it stays that way constantly for about 7 hrs half before the red warning sign appears n this goes on for about 45 mins before going off completely not too sure how bright or wide it can shine cuz i only have this so far QUOTE(budgee @ Sep 12 2013, 08:38 PM) Hah, now this forum is getting to be very hot... more and more foldables are being bought. Pretty soon, we will be able to see more and more foldies riding in the city, parks, gardens, ... going to work... going to the shops... i really think we shld have a 1st post info etc!Once you get your new bike, be sure to ride slow in the beginning, learn its various functions, change gears, learn the balancing part during stopping the bike and during cornering. And if you ride at night, Lights are very, very important! Don't ride unless you have a rear light. The front lights can be a small torch light tied down to handlebars.. But the rear light should be red and this will be your life saver. I finally bought a knog blinders rear... but expensive nya... yup, I can go night riding with a clearer mind now! The battery life is great!! ![]() I did buy the knog blinders front much earlier, but like you said, the battery life is a little short. but the saving point is that it is bright enough for really dark roads.. btw guys make sure ur headlight dsnt blind other road users do a field test, get down from ur bike n put urself in front of it n the light, if it's blinding u then it's blinding other users n that is very dangerous for everyone don't skimp on lights indeed if u ride at night, those can save our ass n lives QUOTE(etigge @ Sep 13 2013, 01:08 AM) This evening a riding kaki brought her Tern Link D8 for me to tune the rear derailleurs as the chain was skipping between cogs. When the bike was here, I was suprised! perhaps we shld really highlight this to Tern, those dealers r clearly very irresponsible n have lousy serviceLuckily I still have the original Neos 8 speed from my Boardwalk. She switched to the Neos. Those intending to buy Terns, especially the Link D8, check the RD. |

QUOTE(KrankZ @ Sep 13 2013, 02:52 AM) i agree wat u said. i got mine from chin aik, penangi bought my folding bike from usj cycle. they didn't service after i bought from them. nvm, i went back for the service the gear n brake, after service the brake i just went home n try the bike. i notice that my front v brake is not responsive. i was like wtf, end up i fixed it myself. their after sales service r very bad. not the friendliest around but what to do, it was the only authorized dealer for dahon at that time i believe i think smaller shops r more friendly n cheaper too i know some friends who buy bikes n parts from the big shops cuz it's not available anywhere else but will only go to their fav small lbs for tuning n service |

QUOTE(myak9 @ Sep 13 2013, 09:27 AM) yes... haih.. do u know any friendly small bike shop around town anot?must of the smaller ah pak shop will be more friendlier than the big ones... but than again... lim bicycle is more friendlier compare to others... most of them will be "friendlier" to you when you buy expansive bike or they know you are in the category of "modifier"... like chin aik...they are the sole agent for dahon and tern in penang... what to do...the uncle there have an attitude... wait till you asked him to install a mud guard... when I install my uno...waahhh lllaauu...he just ketuk the fender without loosening the screws... I told him to be more gentle...he reply me by asking me if the bike can feel pain or only human can... my reaction than... ah lim bicycle is rather far for me QUOTE(budgee @ Sep 13 2013, 10:05 AM) If he were doing that to my bike, I would straight away ask him to stop! I will just take it out of the shop ! No way, will I allow such people to work on my bike. If you don't like your job, change it lah, don't take it out on customers. QUOTE(samosaurus @ Sep 13 2013, 11:30 AM) Ahh.. Not surprising when the Sea Park shop's "tech" guy was merely a cycling enthusiast. wait, they can actually replace the parts at their whim n fancy? And yes, the RD used on the LD8 is a Suntour RD. Cost issue la.. By right, the bike shop should first, do a pre-delivery inspection and tune-up before selling the bike to your friend... But all good things said and done, when you have a half-assed technician, that's what you get. Anyway, good on you Wong Seefu, on addressing the problem.. Sam |

QUOTE(samosaurus @ Sep 13 2013, 03:32 PM) SR Suntour manufactures components as well aside from suspension forks and dampers. One apparent upgrade is their "soap bar" folding pedals on the Terns because many of the Wellgo pedals actually broke.. yikes, wouldn't dare to imagine having a broken pedal when i'm at balik pulau or smthg The broken Wellgo pedals.. So, that said, its no surprise why the Suntour RDs are so frail. Some riders broke their RDs on the Dahon Visc 18 and Dash P18. This prompted a recall and a replacement.. Ah, this one is a "touchy-feely" subject.. The Tech guy still behaves like a Bicycle God even though his background is merely a cycling enthusiast. What is shocking is the fact that he actually meddles with other people's bikes and charges a fee.. The boss of the shop is not bad, she is now well-known among the folding bike circle. Even the media has hailed her as a darling among the cycling community.. Sam QUOTE(earl-ku @ Sep 13 2013, 11:33 PM) awesome! btw perhaps u could edit the thread description a little..add something like 'etc, all bikes r welcome!' QUOTE(Robyn @ Sep 14 2013, 12:01 AM) bro, i have created a FB page, probably u may add this as well so that we can share our activities photo easily over there is that you going to ipoh bikepacking?? damnnnnhttps://www.facebook.com/lowyat.folding.bike this topic is getting more and more interesting |

QUOTE(etigge @ Sep 14 2013, 03:17 PM) looks good! how much r u letting it go for?btw thx for the number, though i'm 90% sure i can't make it anyway, i have some old parts lying around which i plan to fix on my boardwalk d7 a triple chain crankset, the fd, as well the shimano 8 speed shifter/brake level combo they're all cheap components from an old cheap "mtb", do u think i can just transfer em over to my boardwalk? not planning to spend a single cent other than a fd adaptor, IF it's feasible laa can 8 speed shifter work with 7 speed freewheel? QUOTE(etigge @ Sep 14 2013, 04:45 PM) Letting go for RM850. MTB cranks will be 44T max! Will that be enough for flats? I mean it can be used but the lesser number of cogs will not be able to move you fast unless you don't mind being slow. On the plus side though, it will be easy going uphill. Air Itam Dam will not be a problem as the your low gears are more than enough. Go get a 8 speed freewheel, works better. It can be used but shifting will not be accurate at certain stages. I hear the bike shop beside the Bayan Lepas police station still has Shimano Megarange freewheel and I heard it's cheap too. hmm okayy, just asking ni bout the price well i hardly use gear 7 or even 6 at all during my ride as i ride really slow, enjoying the breeze exploring places so i think okay kot! n nah, not planning to spend anything more cuz it's either i'll upgrade the wheelset in future or get a better bike altogether the reason i wanna change is because my original brake level sucks compared to the one i have lying around but the shifter is 8 speed though.. is it fairly easy to change it myself? n will my Neos RD work with triple chain rings? thx in advance! |

etigge, can i use a 8 speed shifter for my 7 speed boardwalk?
much prefer the trigger over the gripshift n at some point i plan to upgrade to better wheelset along with 8 speed cassette but it could take a while at the mean time i just wanna change to trigger shifter n if 8 speed shifter does indeed work then next time i dont have to buy again 7 speed shifter only is hard to find d |

QUOTE(etigge @ Oct 10 2013, 06:42 AM) You actually can use it if you insist but shifting is not accurate and inconsistent. I don't recommend it though. I too like trigger shifter as I find gripshift cumbersome. In your case, upgrading means getting the cassette hub first but if 8 speed is enough for you, you can actually find 8 speed freehubs so you don't have to change wheelsets. At the same time, if you are going to change wheelsets to accommodate cassettes, might as well upgrade to 9 speed! ah I see.. well in that case then I'll just try to source for a cheap 2nd left trigger for now any recommendation on wheelset? smthg decent will do, no need top of the line shld I change the wheelset first or get a dual chairing first? |
