wah...what kind of company is that lah?!?! Want to be "legal" but don't want to spend money. The first thing you tell your manager, what you pay is what you get. Don't expect the "free" version of whatever antivirus you get will be as good as any paid version.

Then you can start trying clamwin or avg or other "free" antivirus.

Well this is a private company, so they are always trying to save money whenever they can..Actually we've tested and research a lot of good antivirus solutions like Norton, Mc Affee, Bit Defender and Officescan.. but the problem is that they don't want to spend too much money for the licensing.. cause you have to renew the license every year. (*They = Refers to my management).

Thanks for the reply.. We've (our MIS Department) has been test running and researching numerous of antivirus solutions for almost half year already.. and we've found a few products that we think could perform the task very well and can simplify the tasks to monitor our network for viruses.

But the problem is that our management don't want to deploy any of those solutions cause they think that the licences are too expensive. For me I think that its worth investing in all those antivirus solutions. So now the management wants us to find some open source and free antivirus solutions..

But the problem is that most free antivirus solutions like avg, avat and antivir are mostly for home user license only. You can't use them in the corporate environment.

So Clamwin seems to be the only solution.. So.. Need to find out more about this clamwin from existing users.

I think clamwin also does not have administrative functions, right? In corporate environment, you definitely need to be able to deploy and manage the antivirus through a server or something. If you have like 50 pcs, it will be a nightmare to manage them if you need to go to each PC one by one.

How big is the company? Chinamen company?

You pay for what you get. They charge you yearly because they let you update antivirus pattern for the duration of the license. That is a lot of work and also takes up resources like server for updates and so on. Most of these antivirus programs have teams of people maintaining it. These people also need to work like you and me to earn a living.

What's wrong with this kind of stupid mentality. Some old 50 year old single women running the company? I am really pissed with this kind of people who doesn't understand the fundamental of software licensing. Tell me the name of the company and I will avoid this company at all cost.

1) Are there any other open source antivirus out there beside Clam Av?

No

2) What's the pros of this Clam AV based on your experience?

Free , Open-Source , Works with Windows Server 2003. It can scan outgoing and incoming e-mails. Pretty good , if you run your own E-mail server. < Memory Footprint...biggrin.gif

3) What's the cons of this Clam AV based on your experience?

Windows does not detect it as Antivirus , the GUI is somewhat geeky...

4) Can Clam AV cleans and remove all the viruses that it detects in the wild, cause I've heard some user claims that Clam AV can only scan for viruses but have not capability to remove them..is this true?

Not sure about that...Some , it can remove , others it can't...50/50. But someone posted a patch that allows you to do that...Im not too sure about that

5) Can we schedule Clam AV to scan for viruses at a specific time and date?

Its possible

6) Can we distribute the Clam AV virus definition update from one focker point to all the available clients?

Should be possible..But again Im not sure. If you change the source , then it might be possible

Yes, you are right.. Clamwin does not have any administrative tools unlike other corporate antivirus suites. And I totally agree with you that it would be a nightmare to manage a huge network.. like ours .. we have approximately 200 units of computers. Currently we are not using any antivirus solutions. We just cleans a computer we suspect infected with viruses using a PC with Antivir Free antivirus solution installed. That's why our whole network is just like a virus pool which have lots of different variant of viruses laying dorment some on clients PCs and some on our servers. So out network would never be virus free. The same virus will keep continue to migrate from one workstation to another.. and we have no means to eliminate them all. Sad but true..

So.. due to the effect of some of the more severe viruses infrections.. our company decide to deploy antivirus solutions to all the workstations but after reviewing numerous corporate antivirus solutions features and prices.. they finally decided to opt for an open source solution which have not good solutions out there in the market.. So.. now they asked me to do some research on this Clamwin.. which... I don't think will work well in a corporate environment.

Yah.. I also understand the importance of software licensing .. and the dedication that programmers invest to create all those great retail antivirus suites.

Actually our company is quite huge and we have several offices across Sarawak. But regarding the name of the company.. its highly confidential.. so I can't disclose it here. Thanks for your post though. sweat.gif

Thanks a lot for clarifying some of the facts here from fiction. I've tested this Clamwin for some days now and I must admit that I'll like a summarized version of an antivirus.. Not must features available to customize and the detection rate still can't confirm.. Will try to test it more. Thanks a lot for posting. notworthy.gif

So does anybody know any good forums that discuss about the codes or have any user created codes for this Clamwin.. Maybe we could find some extra features by adding additional codes to Clamwin.

So existing users of Clamwin please post the pros and cons and usage experience of Clamwin.. or rate it... All post are very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The popular one is AVG and Avast because Clam AV before just running in Linux platform. Clam AV is quite good anti virus but we not usually turn it on in our firewall. Better u using AVG, so easy to use but it's slow ur computer when scanning.
