Hello everyone, icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

Currently my company is sorting for antivirus solutions for all our company's PCs. Our main priority is to save cost so we are focusing more on open source solutions.. So, I've got a few questions in my mind, hope that all the kind people here can give me some opinions and thoughts. My questions are:

1) Are there any other open source antivirus out there beside Clam Av?

2) What's the pros of this Clam AV based on your experience?

3) What's the cons of this Clam AV based on your experience?

4) Can Clam AV cleans and remove all the viruses that it detects in the wild, cause I've heard some user claims that Clam AV can only scan for viruses but have not capability to remove them..is this true?

5) Can we schedule Clam AV to scan for viruses at a specific time and date?

6) Can we distribute the Clam AV virus definition update from one focker point to all the available clients?

Thanks you in advance..

Below are the official URL for Clam AV:

i take it your company are using the windows OS.
instead of using Clam AV you can use Clam Win which is written in Python language and comes up with quite nice GUI. (it`s use Clam AV engine by the way)

Clam AV i thinks runs under cygwin enviroment (correct me if i`m wrong).
yeah it doesn`t have real time scanner.

but the good thing is you don`t need to install it to use it.

clamav is originally build for linux. The port to windows is not that good yet as it is still very new. I have not tested the windows version but I don't suggest you use it for production server or systems.

Under linux version, I have been using clamav for few years. I can tell you that it does get the job done for scanning emails but for realtime protection I don't think it's good enough. But heck it's free so I have no complain.

For windows based, it's better you spend a little money to get proper protection. Ask your boss, what is more important? Saving that little money or saving the systems from viruses that can potential destroy important data. Norton Antivirus 2005 OEM is only selling for RM45, that's very cheap.

norton is not that bad. It is a little bit resource hog but in terms of performance and feature, but it is still a good software.

But it is definitely better than AVG (free version). For paid version, I am not sure if AVG is better because I have not tried paid AVG version.

Well, i don't prefer norton laiw. Since i got that norton virus. Sigh.. sweat.gif i uninstall norton antivirus to clear the virus/worm. Addition, if your pc is not that good, norton using lot of rams. AVG use less ram.

Anyway, back to the topic. Mcafee also not bad. Not that much ram be needed smile.gif

Thanks everyone for the posts and suggestion... anyone ever try the clamwin antivirus?? Any comments and problems that you found out while using it??

Can we create a PC to distribute the virus definition to all the Clam AV clients?

Thanks in advance...

Norton.. is really a resource hog.. and AVG license is for home user and personal use only.. so I think both of them are out of the pic. But thanks everyone for the suggestions..

So if u want something free and legit for your company; Clamwin is for u without real time protection. Which one is better, ......ive seen comp with famous paid antivirus, spyware, firewall and lots of protection still got f*** up by those virus/adware/spyware and etc.

YA!! thumbup.gif for sar!! i also dono why. For me, i using AVG about 2years. No such problem. It's depends on lucks and also your employee. Be more careful in net. Well, u cant consider AVG is for home user. As long as u are lucky and be careful, any antivirus can do the same trick.

Hmm.. i just out of curiousity. Since clamwin is without real time protection. AVG is real time protection. Why u say totally out of pic? I think clamwin kinda not good. No offensive tongue.gif

Thanks everyone for posting.. I need more opinions here.. My manager don't want to spend money on the antivirus... cause it will cost him a fortune..

So.. for those who have tried Clam AV before.. is this Clam AV resource friendly? Does it consume lots of processing power and does it takes a lot of your RAM resources?

Thanks in advance.
