just casual use, is on camera ttl... sb700 too expensive la.. opt for beginner one.. around Rm400(max budget) with good cycle time.. don't want spend too much coz need lens sad.gif
*
Get a 565EX then. It's around your budget and is fantastic, having power and build quality that is 90% of first brand speedlites for like 1/3 of the cost.

There are smaller models with TTL too if size and weight is an issue.

First brand ones are very much overpriced for what you intend to do with them anyway. thumbup.gif

This is Gigabyte's Aivia Osmium mech keyboard. My version is brown key with white backlights icon_rolleyes.gif

Bought this because of the scroll wheel brightness and volume toggels. More importantly, that armrest laugh.gif

Increase your budget. I always advise ppl, if their 1st flash get Nikon 700.. save a few more months. get a better one.. The power output and cycle time is good and most importantly reliable. third party flash are good but still ways to go. sb700 for me is the most value for money due to the amount of function that is build into it .. I'll probably get myself one soon, eventho I have the 800, 900... once I have save up enough
*
http://speedlights.net/compare-speedlight-...00&model2=YN565

I'll have to disagree. An SB700 compared to the 565EX is underpowered yet twice the price, the only reason I see to go for it is if you need HSS and Commander modes from the get go.

For a beginner especially, paying RM900+ upfront for a first party flash is overwhelming especially since they do not know whether they will be using it all the time as well.

I strongly encourage beginners to flash getting third party speedlites albeit known ones like yongnuo since their build is just as solid as first party flashes. Things like power output and recycle times are on par as well.

I currently own 3 Yongnuo flashes, a 565EX and two 560III, the latter having built in radio triggering which you'll have to pay over 2K+ to get in canon's latest 600EX-RT versus just 250 bucks for a 560III.

Going to purchase a Phottix Mitros soon which has all the features of a flagship like HSS, commander modes. Yet is still half price compared to a SB-910.

I'm not saying first party flashes are not good btw, just saying that for most people, third party units are good enough for their needs already since not all first brand merchandise is appropriately priced.

Specs on paper is specs on paper... no doubt that recently the alternative flash units improved their capability and reliability but when it comes down to it... it is ease of use and reliability, color and cycle. I own 800, 900 and 3x YN flash units. on Canon side we have 4 canons (including the overpriced 600EX-RT, which I personally think is rubbish) and 3x YN flash units and a few third party radio triggers. Speed of use, and reliability. hands down is still on Nikon speedlights. especially when we are talking about off shoe lighting... in events such as wedding, we dont have much time to hunt around for the perfect ratio, CLS allows us to do that really quickly and effectively. All build into one package. No extra stuff to look after, no extra batteries to bring... That is from my experience in the field.

Dont get me wrong, I do like the newer YN's.. 1/3 of the price is always good in my books (planning to update my old YN's). All I'm saying is extend the budget, get the SB700 for reliability and capability ease of mind.
*
I'm also talking about real world use bro, not just comparing specs on paper.

I also use Nikon(SB910, not mine) and Yongnuo flashes side by side at events. I dare say that reliability and cycle times is still on par la laugh.gif
No misfires, and both flashes keep up even when I have to fire them at half and quarter power due to high ceilings.

Of course, to be specific I'm talking about an SB910 vs a 565EX here. Talking about ease of use, maybe it's just me but I find using buttons to adjust compensation easier than using the rotary dial on the SB910. But this is really down to user preference since I own the yongnuo in the first place so I feel more at home with it.

Speaking of wireless CLS, the 565EX model does have this feature, my D7000 can command both just fine with compensation done in camera. icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm not questioning your experience in the field la, but I've been using the 565EX for over a year now and I still don't miss anything from Nikon, especially now that HSS and Commander mode are available in newer units like the 568EXII and Mitros for 600-700 bucks.

Since you mentioned that you use CLS on your events, I suggest you take a look at the 560EX flashes that are launched recently. These are manual flashes but have built in CLS capabilities for just RM299. Should be the perfect upgrade for your old YN flashes IMO thumbup.gif

that's the old price lah...

600et-ex =  RM1,599.00 http://shashinki.com/shop/canon-600ex-wire...ia-p-10415.html
SB-910   = RM1,699.00  http://shashinki.com/shop/nikon-speedlight...115-p-9352.html

so canon more cheap + got radio trigger  tongue.gif

of cause the Yongnuo is even cheaper but don't know how good  hmm.gif

Go try one lah icon_rolleyes.gif

btw 1699 for SB910 is overpriced lah. My friend bought at RM1450 only. laugh.gif

my jaw almost drop when I saw YongNuo YN-560 III for rm298 but then no ttl...the day that YongNuo release a canon ettlii compatible flash with radio trigger and proven in the field and below rm500 is the day I sell all my canon speedlights and change to this! looks very promising just a few step more b4 they reach radio trigger+ettl  biggrin.gif looks very promising indeed nod.gif
*
The 560III power ratio can be controlled via remote control leh, the feature hasn't been unlocked yet tho.

I also wait see how it goes... Rm300-Rm400 for this still reasonable.. provided with TTL
*
For me having the ability to control power from a distance is amazing enough already, nevermind the absence of TTL. Especially for RM250 per flashgun shocking.gif

Heck, if anything I started using flash with TTL, then more and more I learn to shoot manual power instead. Better control. laugh.gif

I also have YN565EX its good but still not quite there for me. especially the swivel head. As I was saying, first flash I always recommend Nikon Speedlights, ease of use and reliable. No need to worry about if its going to work or not. Everything basically works right off the bat. I'm not saying that YN or other alternatives are bad. LOL. My SB800 is a bit loose but still works like a charm since 2008. My earlier YN, one cant zoom... one refuses to turn on. I'm still going to buy third party flashes. But I still recommend for first time owners of the magical light in a box to go for Nikon flash.

So lets agree to disagree that everyone has their own ideals and as long as it works, there is no wrong in it.
Im probably going to grab myself a n-flash

LOL ok man, point taken. Strobes huh, awesome, Nicefoto really making a name for themselves lately. thumbup.gif

Same price doesn't mean same level ma, like you said, YN alot of additional features, enough to qualify as an upgrade bah thumbup.gif

17-50mm 2.8 or wide llens ?

i already have 50mm 1.8G with d5100

shooting landscape + street

17-50 first, then only consider whether you need wider than that icon_rolleyes.gif

But its still coming what, isn't that the point since you are looking for a high-end DX?  hmm.gif
*
If the D610 really launches, I wonder what price the D400 would be. Estimate it'll be around 4K.

Problem is, if D610 launch, D600 confirm will drop price kaw kaw to clear stock 1. In the end both bodies price also similiar.

In that case maswell just take the FX body can oredi, even if I have to change lenses laugh.gif

#Speculating on prices only hmm.gif

it's hard to imagine Nikon fixing their price for the cheapest FX body at 4K... I'd imagine maybe around the 5K mark , and the D400 price will be around where the Nikon D7100 was placed at, somewhere in the mid 4K's
*
But the D600 is already selling for around 5400+ right now. I imagine the price can only go lower once the updated one is out? drool.gif drool.gif

That price bracket is for the D610 mah, D600's MSRP will definitely drop 1, after that I guess it's just up to the shops as to how much further they wanna discount the body loh icon_idea.gif

I've been eye-ing on Tamron 60mm f/2 SP Di II LD for D5100, but can't decide the 90mm version (FX) would be better for potraits, and macro (killing two birds in one stone). Heard that the 90mm bokeh rendering is super cool!

I wonder how the 90mm fairs up with potraits, if you a sample? 85mm 1.8G looks delicious.

Mine's the VC version though, but both versions have great bokeh.

Here's a portrait that I've taken using it, albeit a very shaky one icon_rolleyes.gif

i get what you mean but do be careful as you might be getting an empty photo except for weird distortion. you photographs should have good story/message/composition/lighting/etc rather than just the weird distortion
*
I assume you mean perspective distortion? Depends on how you use it la, ultrawides are very difficult to use since they see so much, yet I still love the results that's possible using it.

I use spot centered.

Your white balance for the photos are off, there's a tungsten (orange) tint to the photos, try fixing that aspect first. icon_rolleyes.gif

About the camera telling you that subject is too dark, you'll have to understand how the camera works first.

The way metering in a camera works is like this, if the camera sees a white subject, it will naturally bias the exposure to be darker. With darker subjects the camera will bias the exposure to be brighter.

This is why you should dial in exposure compensation if you're using semi-auto modes (PAS) or shift your aperture/shutter speed in manual mode to get an exposure that looks "right" to you.
