I empathize with your need to wait. I echo your sentiments if that is the case for 4K movies, but NOT games rendered in higher resolution. High resolution texture packs are the norm for modern games since the days of the first Crysis, so textures up to and including 4K are available since (except for console ports, and even then you can supersample it). So when it comes to "most", if that "most" includes legacy old games like HAlf-Life 2, then I'd agree as well. 4K textures on low count polygons is not a pretty sight.

Most games are in 1080p? That is true only in console games, not PC. There's a reason why there's the quality slider bar in games. You dont see the slider bar go beyond 1080p since your display only supports up to 1080p. And even if let say you have a 1440/1600p display, would you be content to stay at 1080p when you have the option of going further?

However, I game in the present, not in the past. And I spec my machine for the future. I do not see myself upgrading anymore for up to 5 years. I had almost 5 years out of my old i7 980X+ GTX 480SLI + Dell U2711 at 2560x1440, when at those times in the 2007/08, gaming at 1080p was a luxury and anything higher was unheard of. Other than a mistaken purchase of a GTX690, which I then rectified with the Titans, I have not purchased a SINGLE upgrade to this rig, until I build my current rig, TEG and its 4K eyes. This will last me for another 5 years. This is how I invest on my gaming build, I dont upgrade incrementally, I go all out and stay with that specs for longer period than those who upgrade yearly or every two years when new GPUs comes out. This 4K monitor investment is gonne be used for an even longer period than how long my Dell U2711, partly because folks refuse to budge from the current 1080p standards, which I've considered as stale since it was made available more than 18 years ago in 1995. John Carmack coded Quake on a 1080p at that time. So because of this, my 4K monitor will be a very sound investment, taking a page from your calculative Chinese culture. Because of the stubbornness and slow general public adoption of 4K, I foresee me 4K as being still treated as high end and relevant even 10 years from now. Now it doesn't sound so bad as an investment now, isnt it? I get to experience it early (which no dollar $$$ value can compare to when it comes to experience), and by 10 years later, it is still a top notch display option.

It's all based on needs and wants. Do you need 4K? You probably need to ask your bank account on that now. Market price is not helping. Do most people want 4K? A lot of those whom I've invited to experience my rig at my home, share that sentiment of "Hell yes!". Financial restraint may be a determining factor of reducing that "Hell yes!" to "Maybe later", but that doesn't detract from the fact that it is impressive. It's the whole "I cant afford this, so it's automatically shitty" mentality that's what I'm trying to break here.

Heat and noise? IF those were the concerns, it's no longer is anymore these days with AIO solutions on CPU waterblocks and GPU waterblocks easily obtained. It's again, a matter of whether you want to do it or not.

In the end, it's a matter of priorities. I'm single, I've not much of a priority other than making sure I enjoy myself and indulge in as many unique experiences I can before I vacate this life. Such priorities may not be mirrored on those who have other obligations like in marriages and families. It still does not mean you cannot appreciate the brilliance of 4K, even if it out of reach.

Since you've indicated about your Chinese culture and being calculative, you're probably not single or have other priorities other than spending that kind of money on gaming PC related stuff. Nothing against that, different people different priorities.
