is it my imagination, or is it that I see every time Samsung releasing a new SSD, they touted that it would be more "cost efficient", "cheaper to manufacture", "performs better with lower cost" etc etc but in reality, all I see is still their drives are still on the high side? Plus, Samsung is ocntroling all the process of manufacturing SSD, from the NAND production to the controller and firmware designs, and historically a company that can control all of the process by itself often manages to bring their products' cost lower compared to other collaborated manufacturers. But it just doesnt seem like it's the case here....  cry.gif  cry.gif

Samsung, when can your drives with those awesome performances (on paper) can also matches the prices of those of MX100 or Ultra II?
Hmm.... I think rulling out that HDD are definitely going to die is a subjective matter, I think when talk about failing rate, yes, HDD has a higher falling rate, due to the spinning plater and the magnetic arm, there are also SSDs that failed, and there are HDD that really performs well.

So in my opinion, i still being conservative regarding the reliability of HDDs compared to SSDs. Just my 2 cents  laugh.gif

The current state of HDD tech seems to stalled, they only introduce larger capacity every year, there are no news about transfer rate improvement, only the SATA 6Gbps gimmick which they could never be achieved.
Also the drive with >2TB has higher failure rate, they just reduce the warranty period, there is no new tech for the hdd protection.
You want longer warranty and longer MTBF? get enterprise drive, double the price with same capacity. brows.gif shakehead.gif sweat.gif doh.gif

And you guys seems forget there is a thing called RAID sweat.gif
forget about new SATA 6Gbps SSD, they're for laptop that don't have m.2 slot or lousy AMD mobo.
get a dual cheapo SSD and RAID the hell out of it if your mobo support TRIM on RAID 0 array, or just get XP941.

any possibility 850 evo price can drop till bout rm450 in the middle of the year?
*
Why don't get the 120GB version?
Also if you really want higher performance with cheaper price, do RAID 0, with two cheap SSD.
RAID 0 SSD is always faster than any single SATA 6GB/s SSD.

using y50, single slot hard disk bay...120 too small...so going for 250 lo...if change new laptop can use the same ssd right
*
Yeah you can, but you don't need high performance SSD, most user don't need either, they makes little difference in performance.
most of the SATA SSD stuck at 6GB/s anyway, but the RAM caching software like Samsung Magician will help.

Most of the newer laptop moved to m.2 SSD iirc, which does not have the 6GB/s cap.

pcie 2 ssd
how good issit
?

Depends, PCIE SSD (lower end PCIE SSD are just m.2 SSD with PCIE adapter anyway) is faster, but you must buy the one support booting (OPROM), some PCIE are unbootable, eg the Samsung XP941.

thinking of getting this cause got 5 year warranty....or not might go for mx100 which is best for buck from what i read
*
The SSD price will just keep dropping, no need for extra long warranty for it, after 10 year 1TB SSD might just cost as cheap as 1TB HDD.
Also if you torrenting on SSD, the SSD maker will not honor the warranty if total write bytes exceed the limited set by them.

no, if your mobo and os supports uefi, xp941 can boot without oprom. i am running one with w8.1 uefi and it works with m.2 or pcie slot (my current setup).

however if you don't have either support, yes you need the ones with oprom, like plextor drives.

edit: one more thing about m.2 ssd, there are 2 types of m.2 slot in laptops: sata-based and pcie-based. make sure you get the right one.
*
Didn't know it sweat.gif
EFI booting might be good for laptop or low end PC, i don't know about Intel mobo, but AMD 900 series mobo and older does not support RAID anymore if EFI enabled.
My pc still on legacy mode which booting is far much slower than my HTPC lol doh.gif

Another way to boot the m2 SSD without OPROM probably is install the bootloader on bootable SSD/HDD, but this is just a theory.

The ones popular here are Intel 530 and Samsung 840 Evo 128GB is selling round RM260. It's a good time to move to 256GB (~RM465) instead. More space for programs to run.

Why no one recommends Plextor SSD? sweat.gif
How is the Plextor SSD price in Malaysia? In Singapore here the Plextor SSD M6P price same as 840 EVO, they even gave the external enclosure at first launch.

Ditto Plextor is on the Premium level. Malaysia market too small so Plextor rather give way for Samsung and Intel. Sigh...  sad.gif

Price at first launch, though 840 EVO price already dropped further.
I went to shop yesterday i think they still have the external enclosure left lol sweat.gif

It's so damn cheap you can pretty much forget the external HDD or big capacity thumbdrive, because the later are slower/unreliable and much more expensive doh.gif

i dont think the price is "slightly expensive" when it costs 2x of SATA SSD of equivalent capacity  sweat.gif

but damn.... hope prices for SATA SSDs can come down faster abit...  cry.gif  cry.gif

You can always opt for 2X SSD as RAID 0, double capacity, double speed and double the risk rclxms.gif
