Thanks again for the great advice. RAPID sounds really good. Guess I'll have to tinker and play around with the Magician software, as well as using the ten step SSD Optimization.

But for space, I think 250GB is enough for OS and several games. Gonna keep the other stuff like songs and movies in my 3TB Drive. But I will try not to breach 210GB as a space usage limit on the SSD.
*
yes, that's a good practice (ssd as boot drive and hdd as storage)

although it's good to allocate some space for over provisioning (10 to 15% should be suffice), you can use it as is for your usage.

Yeah always planned to do a split program drive (ssd) and data drive (hdd).

Alright noted. I usable space would be around 235GB or so, so I'll try to keep it around 200/210GB max. Worse comes to worse I'll get a second 250GB drive and do a RAID 0. But by then I Dont think RAPID can be used. See how.

Thanks mate! thumbup.gif

Another thing i've observed in regards to lifespan is also this:

I typically replace gadgets every 4 years. And current SSD can last roughly 7 years+ .. So aggressively installing/uninstalling stuff brings it to a close number of my 4 years usage.

But even with my aggressive usage, i think there's still plenty more than 4 years.

My point is, don't worry about the lifespan on current SSD. To keep it optimal

1. defrag=off
2. trim=on

And do whatever you want to it. I used it for my heavy rendering and it's still kicking after 2 years+ (lost count).

what's your current firmware version for the m5? have you updated to the latest one?

the problem might be related to power plan settings. check your power plan, and set the hard disk option (turn off hard disk after) to never (meaning 0). also, someone use software to keep the hdd alive (http://keepalivehd.codeplex.com/). you might wanna use that too.

it's running at sata 3 speed.

as for health checking, crystal diskinfo should be good enough. or, you can get plextool from plextor website.

have you secure-erased it before? maybe it's at 'dirty state'. alternatively, leaving it alone/idle for a few hours might also help.

i agree with u..my Samsung 830 that i bought early 2013, now took longer to shutdown..and very noticeable under performance

boot time also kinda slow..maybe i need to do fresh format windows so it will be back like new..havent formatted my windows since i got the SSD
*
when it slows down, just use disk management to delete all partitions to unallocated space. it will be like new again. given enough idle time (a few hours) and free space, the drive can maintain speed quite well.

i haven't had such problems with my 830. it's a storage drive but then i give it some 15% space as unallocated.

what do u mean by deleting all partitions? i havent make any partitions on my SSD as it is only drive C where my windows 7 stored..if i delete it, my windows and all data will be gone right? my problem is my boot time and shutdown took longer than it is used when it was still new..

u said that ur 830 is for storage, mine is windows hmm.gif
*
i mean delete all the partitions literally. if you have one partition only then delete that one partition. this means to say that you will recreate everything if your windows is on it. (you're correct, it means your windows and all data will be gone). of course there are other factors involved, for instance, the system will slow down because more and more apps were installed over time.

to recover the disk performance, normally people will do secure erase. deleting partitions with disk management on windows is one way of doing it. (alternatively, you could use magician's secure erase function)

CCleaner has a 'wipe drive' function as well.
*
oh.. normally i do two steps: delete the partitions using disk management; then use diskpart's clean to clear all attributes in the ssd. reboot the machine after that.

samsung 840 and 840 pro has a new firmware released (DXT09B0Q and DXM06B0Q). use magician to update.

changelog said "Improved compatibility with ultra-slim and mobile PCs."

it's a good ssd. you can enable rapid mode to boost things furthers if you want. you should have gotten 256gb. bf4 alone is about 34.7GB now (with 2 dlc's).

jz found out i can onli go for msata ssd...
which is d best value msata ssd available?
currently eyeing on plextor m5m or samsung 840 evo msata...
*
both are fine. i think samsung 840 evo is better because of speed (with rapid mode). i personally use plextor m5m. so far so good.

QUOTE(Crusnik04 @ Mar 17 2014, 09:18 PM)
hahha ok then..next ssd will be 256gb..this one primary for os and drivers only
