How is Lenovo customer service? Is it as good as Dell?
Currently using Dell Inspiron but don't like its non solid feel.
*
Lenovo's on-site warranty support should be pretty decent, though probably not as good as Dell.
Oh, that's because the Inspiron is a budget-line, consumer notebook haha.
Check out the Latitude series, I'm sure you will be impressed nod.gif

There seems to be at least 10 different choices of Latitude models. Any specific recommended model?
*
We don't have specific details on the models unfortunately, you will have to start from here:
http://www.dell.com/my/business/p/latitude-laptops

Check out the ones under "Business Basics" or "Ultrabook".
You can either check with resellers, or email Dell directly for purchase nod.gif

I'm not sure why Dell has made it so difficult for normal users to purchase their business-line notebooks. Sorry about that icon_rolleyes.gif

1. Preferred Brand -ANY
2. Budget - 4k +-
3. Usage - PES, SOME ONLINE GAME ALSO TO RUN INTERIOR CAD WHEN WORKING
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14' or Max 15.6"

currently using dell studio xps, already 3years old, but the machine getting slower even after some cleaning process.

actually do compare gaming series from Lenovo and Msi,
but just cant make up my mind , any other better recommendation?
*
If gaming is more important to you, get this:
15.6"
Lenovo Y510p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM3999[2.7kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, GN37 exGPU & ODD, 120w+170w psu, 2 yrs

If work is more important, than this:
15.6"
MSI GE60-2OE, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM4299,8GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8, backlit keyboard

Illegear Illegear RE-15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080)@RM3799[2.6kg][Onkyo, SoundBlaster Cinema], 8GB, 500GB 7200RPM, FreeDOS, [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4900MQ]

QUOTE(eddydo @ Aug 29 2013, 01:33 PM)
Okay so previously some sifu recommended:

If my budget is MAX rm3000,
Y510p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM3099[2.7kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, swappable ODD, 120w psu, 2 yrs

and

If my budget can push up to rm8000,
Macbook Pro Retina Display 15-inch.

So my question is that, is Illegear's laptop can be compared with Macbook?
*
I don't think you should burn your dad's pockets with the MacBook 15 Retina Display man lol... earn your own money for one later on nod.gif

Actually you can also go for an above-average notebook and an external monitor with good color reproductions (if your photo and video editing work is very serious) too. Still cheaper than the MBP 15 laugh.gif

Or just get an Illegear with the top screen upgrade, its a viable option as well nod.gif

Since I am also into photo editing (not video though tongue.gif), RAM > CPU > GPU. These are the main requirements (in that arrangement) for Photoshop. If I were you, I will go for an Illegear RE-15, upgrade the RAM to 16GB, opt for an SSD, warranty extension and of course, the screen upgrade.
Just my 2 cents icon_rolleyes.gif

*
WE sifus are trying really hard to inform buyers that there are local and non-local sets.
Non-local sets, despite being really cheap, have no warranty here.
So please be cautious when purchasing nod.gif

Thanks for the fast reply heh. I thought about the set up with above average notebook and external monitor, but i got a desktop already. So anyways, I guess i will stick with Lenovo 510p(right?) and only get it after the haswell refresh(right?)

OR

Illegear RE-15 with the upgrades you recommended.

Thanks for the help mate  brows.gif
*
Lenovo Y510p is already running on Haswell mate lol nod.gif

Its entirely up to you since its your money and decision lol
The Illegear RE-15, with the mentioned upgrades, will be faster than the Y510p. But then of course you can make all those upgrades to the Y510p as well nod.gif

Personally I like being able to customize everything in my notebook, including the design and color of the lid! laugh.gif
THat makes the Illegear a better pick for me. It is really up to you nod.gif

last time i say the same for my friend.... get a cheaper alternative and money saved can be used elsewhere...

she did it, but half year later she still buy a mac, that time she brought a 15 macbook pro, she say the whole package that macbook provides is better, screen is nicer, software is more smooth, more professional choices, final cut pro x, photoshop, aperture, premier pro etc. and most of the professionals used macs...

sometimes it is just not about get the job done, is how to get the job done at more efficient and professional way. that is no cheaper alternatives...

and if use gaming spec laptop for photo /video editing...  blink.gif  blink.gif
*
So you are asking eddydo to spent RM8000 of his dad's money to buy a MBP 15 RD? I'm assuming he is still on his early stages of photo/video editing at the moment, is there really a need for a MBP15? hmm.gif
Not to mention that most of the programs you mentioned are super expensive, and not-that-easy to find/pirate on a Mac.

I had no problems doing photo editing with my Sandy Bridge-powered notebook (I'm using a D800 btw, so its not just some minor processing). Hell, even my sifu can do awesome products (he is professional i.e. earning from photography) with his cheap@ss Rm1.5k Toshiba lol

Like I mentioned earlier, I never denied Macs are good for photo editing, but it depends on the situation. If you can't afford it, doesn't mean one should sell his/her liver to get one because its "really good", especially so if he/she doesn't really need 100% of it.

FYI, the "gaming-spec laptop" has better specs (or same GPU for the Y510p) apart from the MBP15 Retina Display, which can be substituted by a good, even higher resolution yet cheaper monitor hmm.gif

I would have clicked "LIKE" for this reply. Nowadays, gadget buyers have no idea what they are buying. Buying the best gadget out there and hardly produce anything significant that has the same level of processing requirements.

Another thing is, if one were so rich to splash, there is really no need to ask around here cause they usually have no budget constraint. Better save some money as gadgets phase out so fast... -.-

Just being harsh in general, no pointing icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Thanks man haha, I learnt it the hard way unfortunately... I bought the "best" thing during my day, just to see its value dropped so much after just a half a year lol laugh.gif

If budget is not a problem, then I'm pretty sure we will all go for the best ones la haha laugh.gif

Err, I disagree on that. RE-15 has more upgrade options than the Y510P.
1. According to Devour, the Malaysian Y510P has a M2 slot but no connector installed (its installed on the US versions), so you can plug in a M2 SSD later when it becomes available.
2. Y510P cannot turbo boost (disabled). RE-15 can.
3. RE-15, no micro-stuttering. Y510P can micro stutter if FPS is below 40 FPS.

However, Y510P is cheaper (for the dual SLI version with 2 years warranty) than a similar configured RE-15.
*
Thanks for the input~
I didn't really keep track of specific models, so I appreciate your input notworthy.gif

1) Most people would look at replacing the HDD with SSD right? hmm.gif At least for me I'm not really troubled with the mSATA upgradibility haha

2) I'm sure most people would be unhappy with not having turbo-boost I suppose, although most won't notice it. Some people sometimes disable their TB manually to lower their gaming notebooks too. I do it too when I'm running analyses 24/7.

So, it still depends on what the buyer wants I guess haha.
No doubt I will choose the Illegear haha, its a gaming notebook; whereas Y series notebooks are more towards multimedia. But of course, need to pay the price lo sad.gif

No one is la haha. After I started earning my own money, I've gradually made the switch to ori already... but unfortunately some still has issues doh.gif

But to be honest, not many can afford a RM2.5k Photoshop, and its only one part of the entire collection sad.gif

Hey guys and girls (and those in between)

I'm looking to buy a new laptop with a max budget of 4k rm. I've had bad experiences ACER with overheating, so would like to avoid them!  vmad.gif

My main requirements are:

1) Able to play old LAN games (your quake 3's, AOE 2, WoW etc)
2) Needs to be light in weight (Below 2.5kg)
3) Good media laptop (good sound system and viewing)
4) NON integrated gfx card

I thought the MSI GE40 was a good fit for the above but welcome any other opinions   icon_question.gif

Thanks!!
*
Looks like you have already done your homework laugh.gif
That MSI is pretty much your only pick at the moment for that price and weight range hmm.gif
But do take note that the MSI is pretty slim and it packs a lot of punch, so it might get hot as well, have to take good care of it icon_rolleyes.gif

Check: there's the bigger MSI brothers (~2.4kg) as well which is below 2.5kg (excluding the adapter tongue.gif)

Chill man, there will always be flame wars between Windows and Mac users one icon_rolleyes.gif

But I think its better not to use so much of your parents money la haha, RM8k is quite a lot.

Since you are just starting out, stick to a "cheaper" notebook 1st (perhaps even the non-Retina Display MBP15 too), and trust me, along the way when you become more pro, you will know what you really need eventually (including programs, damn expensive). And by that time you will be able to really buy what you really need nod.gif

As mentioned earlier, my notebook is capable of handling my D800's 36MP images pretty swiftly (not 100% smooth though; I'm using an i7-2820QM, very powerful during its time, but not even close to the ones we have now). We often recommend buyers with "limited" budget to focus more on RAM, CPU and SSD. Those 3 will really bring about the difference nod.gif

As for stability, not really sure since I haven't been able to compare side-to-side. As for software compatibilities.. While I've been trying to get Nik Software plugins to work on my Photoshop and Lightroom. I've came across many Mac users also having the same problem. But that's probably because of the software, not the brand haha

The choice is yours icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(Cheesenium @ Aug 30 2013, 02:36 PM)
Used to work as a barista in Australia. If your friends can afford, i think they can go for the higher end ones as those machines will be able to extract the taste of the coffee better than the cheap ones while the steam ward will have higher pressure to produce better steamed milk. The cheap 2-3k ones, the coffee shots extracted feels much weaker.

Still, back to topic, I am just looking for options for:

1. Preferred Brand: Asus, Gigabyte, MSI. Must have nVidia GPU.
2. Budget: Not more than 3.5k.
3. Usage: mainly AutoCAD drafting and Office with maybe a bit of gaming with newer touch screen supported games like XCOM Enemy Unknown, Civilization V, Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed to old games like C&C Generals or Dawn of War 1.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: Up to 15.3 inch. Not more than 2kg if possible. Must have touch screen, heard Win 8 is more bearable with it.

Additional Information: Something with similar specs to a Razer Edge slate where it has a touch screen with ULV version of i7 and an nVidia 650M GPU. Better if there is one that is similar to a Surface Pro, if not ultrabook form factor is ok too.

I know Asus has one with similar specs as Razer Edge but in ultrabook form factor.

Wow, this is a really tough one laugh.gif laugh.gif
I think the closest would be these, though not neccesarily the brands/requirements/dimensions/weight you wanted. 15.6" touchscreen notebooks are pretty uncommon at this time

Unfortunately your budget is not enough for SSD upgrades at this time. But no worries, you can always upgrade later when you have the budget by replacing the HDD.
Can consider these:
