Haswell is mostly about power consumption right? If my main concern is performance, then waiting for Haswell isn't that important?
*
haswell isnt focus just only for battery life, even performance improvement. but it depends on personal preferences, as a processor never helps in heavy gaming. whistling.gif

But let’s say I have targeted a few laptops, and if haswell reaches those, will the price be significantly increased? Those laptops are just marginally in my budget.
*
yes, they will increase. assuming, an ivy bridge Y400 priced at RM2799, and Y410p at RM2899, it is a RM100 difference. since the release of haswell processors, every computer components had a price hike.

im working at a computer shop, so i know. icon_rolleyes.gif

Erm, are you high bro? Yea I only want to spend around RM1k for a portable laptop that will be thrown around a lot. Definitely not as rich as you, so won't spend RM10k of my hard earned money on something that I intend to use only during work which compared to hell, might be confusing. Keep the sarcasm to yourself, might save your life.
*
QUOTE(d3m0n @ Jul 17 2013, 10:31 AM)
Let me clear things up. 10 inch laptop, not a lot in the wilds right? Most are almost evenly priced among all the brands, correct? Unless I am retarded and there are millions of 10 inch laptops. No? So I didn't bother to put the brands and budget. There.

Well about that, I think you guys misunderstood me. It was meant as a playful remark, you took it the other way around and paint it black. But I guess playfulness is a big sin here huh? Well that being said, I sincerely apologize to you and PJ for my ignorance. Cheers and keep doing what you are doing.

Btw PJ, sorry if I treated you as my employee. That is how you feel right? Lol.
*
stop being an arse please. people had been spending time on giving recommendations for you, but you treated them like they are getting paid or else. even nexus and i dont even get paid for volunteering in laptop recommendations and i even bothered myself to check around LYN even though im on the work. if you are not happy enough, you can have a look at the laptop catalog at here yourself. so my conclusion is, please be nice to people if you want people to be nice with you.

Wow, thanks. Should have gotten slightly cheaper targets then. But i'll need a laptop by next month, so, I probably won't wait
*
if you are urgent to get a haswell laptop, the one only you can get is this:

Acer V5-473PG-54204G50, i5-4200 + Nvidia GT740M +(1366x768;touch)@RM2299, 4GB, 500GB,W8 *no OD

but seems to be overpriced your budget, though. sweat.gif

But the main reason of elimination of netbook not because of crap ATOM processors nor pricing, is because of Windows 8 Metro Apps cannot support resolution lower than 1366 x 768 (but there's a glitches) , and no "special" edition of Windows 8 like W7 Starter made for netbook, hence manufacturer have no choice to eliminate it.
*
yes, have to agree that. Windows 8 on 1280x800 reso on my elitebook 6930p lacks of the multi-screen tasking feature.

QUOTE(Laenor @ Jul 19 2013, 07:09 AM)
Morning, hi..
Need some help here..  icon_question.gif

Preferred brand: Any
Budget: 1.6k~2k
Usage: Gaming(WoW -consistent fps would be nice ,LoL and few others), Univ work(word, ppt, pdf), watch movies
Preferences: 14", not so heavy

note: i am not much in a hurry, i read something about Haswell processor or something in earlier posts (honestly i dont understand), does it include in my budget range and is it worth the wait?
One more thing, ive been using Acer Aspire 4741G (i5, Nvidia 310M) for more than 2 years now which i bought at around 1.8k(dont really remember). Its not really in a bad condition but if i buy a new laptop now, would the upgrade be a lot (since the price range is still the same) or should i just save up same more?

Thanks in advance..  smile.gif
*
you should get a new laptop if you plan to upgrade, cuz upgrading it is not worth except for SSD investment. and according to haswell, it is just a new microarchitecture of intel processors. it just mainly have better graphic performance and power efficient. it just depends on you if you are urgent to get a laptop or not. however, your choices :

Lenovo
Z400, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099, 4GB, 1TB, W8; 2 years warranty; colors: chocolate

Dell
Inspiron 14-3421, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT625M@RM1699[1.99kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 6-cell, W8SL

ASUS
K46CM-WX059V, i3-3217U + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, 4-cell battery, W7HP, OD

HP
Envy4-1238TX, i5-3337U + AMD HD8750M@RM2099[Beats][1.75kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

prices are RRP and negotiable.

2) Prefer mobile type (smaller so can carry around), say maximum screen size I can tolerate is 14"
3) Reliable
4) Good service
5) Hybrid hard drive
6) Budget below RM3.3K

I drill down to Sony, HP, Asus or Toshiba... What you guys recommend?

well, i cant say that. all brands are the same, and most of the rest depends on your luck. my experience with 3 brandings, Alienware, ASUS and HP so far are good. i rate Alienware on top of my list, HP 2nd and ASUS 3rd.

I've seen them in person. The spec+price doesn't fit me, I can get better specs for Lenovo or Toshiba.
*
QUOTE(blueheaven @ Jul 23 2013, 08:05 AM)
better specs for that price? I thought the prices there were pretty good already, just that from reviews, it seems like Toshiba and Lenovo may have better build than those Dells.

BTW, how do they look in person? Do they feel decently solid or it's all just looks and feels cheap?

From what I read, I wouldn't recommend it unless on a very tight budget.
*
Dell Inspiron 15R, i7-3537U + AMD HD8730M@RM2499[2.32kg], 6GB, 1TB(5400rpm), 6-cell, W8SL

this is the only that worth the budget. spending extra RM700 for an anti-glare full HD reso isnt worth it.
the aluminium look makes it feels it is well made and doesnt cheap either. for the lenovo, i felt that the brushed aluminium looks like they easy to be cracked and the Yoga even worse, feels like the rubberized palm rest will easy to wear off. toshiba on the other hand, more worse. the whole body is plasticky feel, due to the traditional glossy design.

by what's the disadvantage of a 15inch laptop compared to a 14inch one with similar specs? besides weight, size and battery consumption?
*
no other disadvantages. battery consumption on the other hand, is not highly affected by screen size. due to the ULV CPU that is provided by intel, it can provide a better battery life.
