Some poison for RoadBike. rclxms.gif

Frequently Asked Question on what kind of bikes to get:

1) Aluminum bike - 10 speed Tiagra (maybe mixed Tiagra - Sora), priced around RM3k up- this would be the absolute lowest point i would say to start from... any lower and you will land outside of 10speed equipment and any upgrades will certainly be more than the difference you saved not buying this bike.. shimano launched tiagra with 10speed beginning of this year making this a considerable choice... also, this grade of bike will have a more common grade of cockpit (handlebar, stem, seat post, saddle) and cheaper wheels

2) Aluminum bike - 10 speed 105 (maybe mixed 105 - Tiagra), priced around RM3.8k up- most likely the same frame above with a different paint livery, this would be an entry level into shimano's definition of competition components... tiagra would be what they called the top tier among the enthusiast group.. although both 10 speed... but materials and feel... tiagra has a shift indicator while the 105 does not hence giving you a pro feel (what the bike shop will tell you)...mostly.. tiagra has a bit more plasticky bits than 105... some slightly more expensive models might even start offering slightly better wheels like mavic aksiums along with better slightly better graded cockpit...

- i would not try and go past 105 on a aluminum bike... the best brands like specialized or bmc will be selling an aluminum bike equipped with 105 for a little over RM5k... going 1 notch up into ultegra will lead you to start looking into higher end bikes as those bikes will surely creep past RM6k and most likely a mismatch between frame and component grades... you will be practically trying to pair a set of RAYS CE28N onto a Perodua Myvi if you get what i mean in car terms...

3) Carbon bike - 10 speed 105 (possibly not full 105), priced around RM7k up- this would be a foray into performance bicycles... although a carbon frame... but this are not the best carbon has to offer for 2 reasons... carbon cloth grade (less modulus, less weave, lower grade binding agents) and the man power / time needed (less complex layup schedules) to layup the carbon layers into producing a frame... basically a mass produced frame with the lowest production cost possible... not all that bad... it should still be on par if not better with the best of the aluminum frames in terms of stiffness.. basically, component should be similar or slightly better than the aluminum 105 bike depending on the price you pay...

- here i would name one which shocked me quite a bit recently... saw this Look 566...this http://www.lookcycle.com/en/int/route/velo...-bike-2013.html , but i guess a previous year model...... carbon frame with Mavic Aksium wheels... not a complete 105 with some downgraded cranks and calipers... a carbon frame with comfort geometry retailing for RM7.1k if my memory serves me right...

- price is slightly high for some people... but if you look at it...maybe under 30% more if you are looking at a Apex or 105 equipped Specialize Allez

4) free for all - death - bankruptcy - you name it...
- step into this and there will be no return...

Beside on the modern roadbike, there's also classic roadbike that worth to consider, if you're classic roadbike lover.

at best, this is considered a classic remake...

with columbus tubing at least... if there is any chance that anyone still makes a bike with reynolds 531 tubing, even better...

it has to be small round tubes and lugged in order to qualify as classic...

rules are rules, once hit 2,500 posts have to move new house.

i dont think i wanna upgrade my wheelsets liao after reading all these comments. "***run-crying***"

if you want test ur new wheelsets efficiency, aerodynamic, cut wind or not, loud sound when standing climb or not and etc etc, challenges are welcome to beat golden rim and spoke stock X1 wheelsets.

sure or not wider wheels harder to start spinning? being wide has nothing to do with it. what can make the difference is the mass of the rim coz u'll have higher inertia. anyway, how often do you start/stop? let's say a 100km ride, u only start/stop at most 10 times. wider rims will achieve lower rolling resistance.
*
you will stop/start a lot when you faces a lot of traffic lights.

Abang-abang sekalian. I need some opinion and recommendation. Lately, I've no time for group ride with my friend. So for safety reason, I'm looking to buy indoor trainer to maintain my fitness. So based on my friend recommendation, they advice my to buy a roller. Izzit a good moves for newbie like me or should I choose trainer instead?

I've done a quick study on the net and survey at my lbs last weekend. As budget constrain, my bucket list just stuck at some unbranded roller,  Minoura B60-R, Giant Cyclotron II Mag and few other which I cannot recalled. Is there any good offer around Klang Valley for indoor trainer?
*
Roller are for those elite rider. Roller are for them to perfection their cycling gait... postures etc etc.

trainer are for those want fitness improvement.

have you look at Athetele Circle?

QUOTE(butthead @ Jun 10 2013, 03:43 PM)
as long as there is variable resistance...

roller resistance is never going to be enough....
*
Elite riders already have strength, thus roller are better suit.

My twinhead still in good condition since Jan 2012.

QUOTE(butthead @ Jun 10 2013, 07:09 PM)
haiyah... u just need to know which petrol station can pump up to the maximum pressure u need lar...most petrol station can only reach 60-70psi...especially petronas, the pump no reach also the gauge selection cannot go past 55psi...

most shell can reach 90 or even 100psi... but try to pump lower because it usually overshoots the target pressure because the volume pumped is quite much...

and usually i let out pressure until the tire starts to flat a bit only i pump... i dun pump when the tire is full of air..
*
have you tried BHP petrol station? their old analog pump can tune up quite high.

but i never go petrol station pump before.

QUOTE(SYAMiLLiON @ Jun 10 2013, 10:26 PM)

don't buy their portable pumps though.. no replacement parts...

i got 2 pocket rocket already rocket up to heaven already because no parts after the internal adapter fell out from too much rattling on the bike...
*
i have Topeak small portable pump... Gold color! so far so far.... although i experienced 3 times punctures in 2 occasions, my small pump functions well....

QUOTE(miaopurr @ Jun 11 2013, 11:31 AM)
OR, u can order a better alternative; topeak's smarthead, or kcnc head, hirame, etc.
*
wait... my floor pump is Topeak one, its should be smarthead right? i got mixed up between twinheads and smarthead. zzz rclxub.gif

the weight is kind of pointless... heavier will make it harder to spin up... and supposedly it should provide a level of continuous forward momentum to simulate real world riding (if you have ridden stationary bikes before, you know the use of flywheel)

but with the resistance in... the momentum would not make any sense at all...because the resistance would be like putting a brake on the heavy flywheel...
*
from my previous info surveying, best trainer are magnetic trainer compared to others.

it's gay coming from you...
mine puncture 2 times and i found the internal adapter along with the cover missing because the dust cap already came off and did not prevent the cover from un-screwing itself...

total times used, 0, nada, zilch...and the pump already went AWOL

twinhead is the one where the lever swing left and right

smarthead is the single flip style lever only...

without the need for mounting anything and flexible to move it around... but costs RM300...
*
its ok to buy it RM300, if its only friction cost of your bike i.e 0.03%. anthing that cost more than 0.06% over ur bike cost are not worth it. it just not worth it.
