say no to razer if music

shure, AKG, beyer, ATH, yes

which suits best depends on type of music then, they all have portable headphones, and they all sound real different

If it is only for classical music, try to look for headphone focus in in treble and bass rather than mid. Focus in mid is good for vocal but may make the instruments sound blur. To me, classical music like orchestra and vocal are 2 different area to cover.
And classical music needs big sound stage to perform well. Headphone like beyerdynamic DT990 perform quite well in classical music but it's definitely not for portable and it needs better amp to drive as well.
Understand that you need it for portable use, but even if you spend all RM1.5k budget on headphone, your hand phone as a dac is a limitation.
This really depends on whether you want to upgrade in the future. If yes, then get a good headphone and upgrade other gears later on.
Else I rather you just grab a ATH M50 + fiio x3 /x5.

Sennheiser momentum and emperor are said to be easier to drive version of HD25-i-ii. With good amp, hd25 is definitely a better choice. (Or beyerdynamic DT1350, more refined kindly of sound.)
Sennheiser momentum to me is not a very balance sound headphone. Quite focus in mid, mid is slightly forward, bass is not very punchy, treble expansion is not so much. Suitable for pop and vocal but not big production.
Sennheiser Amperior is more suitable for classical, powerful with good dynamic. Mid bass is quite rich. Probably can go for this. I'm not sure how good E12 can drive it. I just tried it on other set up.

The rest of the headphone listed, KEF is a quite decent headphone but don't think you should go for it as you need headphone that has lesser needs in amp.

Looks like you've done your research. Those are all very favourably reviewed closed headphones in the same ballpark in terms of prices. Not sure what some others are referring to. I might be able to help you, as i've auditioned some of those.
Tested the momentum, psb m4u, and hp50 side by side back when i was looking to purchase. (Personal!) impressions below :

i know source is important, that's why im considering to upgrade the dac/amp to replace the e12 also. i want to use my phone as source because i like spotify lol

just dug out my m50 to test, it is not balanced, the lower mid sounds... separated and weird for me, like it's not smooth and i don't like the soundstage either, it's too intimate. basically, i love my ue900, it's just the echo-ey mid drives me mad. i love my q701 the most when it comes to classical music and orchestra, however, it's open and too big for portable use.

amperior is on-ear so straight away it is out of my list.

i acknowledge the amp requirement that's why those headphones in my list are all designed for portable use, except the focal spirit classic (but they includes a mic cable with it anyway and it still has a low impedance)

thanks for your feedback, i think i will probably buy the viso hp50 since it knocked the momentum off the innerfidelity's wall of fame. i am also interested in its room feel thing (i guess it feels like listening to q701?)

Hey guys need some advice to what headphones to get.
I'm using this mostly for music and movies/tv shows.
I'm staying in US now so I have access to most brands.
Currently I'm just using some noise cancelling earphones but sound quality so-so only. (bose qc20i)
My preference is decent sound quality, looks good and portable.
Budget is around $300-400 USD.
Here are my options so far
-b&w p5
-b&o h6
-sennheiser momentum

if you guys can suggest anything better or cheaper, please go ahead.

Still advice that you try out both first, not for sound but for fit(which affects sound, anyway). It is quite an investment after all.. Like i've mentioned, the fit of both headphones is abit hit-or-miss. I had problems with the viso hp50 while wearing my older glasses which had a thicker frame. Couldnt get a seal at the back of my ear near my neck, probably due to the rectangle shape of the earcup. This reduced the bass response. If you wear glasses anyways, suggest you test the hp50 first.
Don't know what exactly the roomfeel does, but anyway the soundstaging is somewhat intimate with good imaging.

M50 as a popular sound monitoring headphone is actually quite balance sound. The reason that it doesn't sound balance to you might due to your set up.
Headphones could sound different over different set up. A proper and healthier M50 sound, is actually quite smooth and comfortable. Though sound stage is not very big, dynamic is not too outstanding but good enough.
When comes to AKG, the traditional AKG sound K701 is actually better for classical and orchestra. Sennheiser HD600 is quite good as well. But not easy to drive well.
Q701 is more pop sound and being released after the US company take over AKG. If you have chance, can try them out.

NAD HP50 received very good reviews at overseas. Its selling point is about the room feel. How they create the room feel is by enhancing the separation and increase the density of mid. So vocal and some instruments and mids will be more outstanding. It's not bad, clean sound, good dynamic and easy to drive. To me it's more suitable for pop.

Anyway, different people have different taste. Ultimately, we will still stick to something that we are comfortable with. Good luck in your headphone sourcing. biggrin.gif

Anyway, I will use it as reference and of course test it if it suits my taste.  rclxms.gif

Tested the DT231, yup....bass isn't that strong.

However I tested the XP series and find the XP2 is best among other XP series.

be careful though, durability and build quality is poor. Seen many users complain of theirs breaking down in less than a year.

- General use, music + movies + gaming... all that
- Mostly MP3, got some FLAC too
- Game OST consist of too many genres
- Closed, but open to a lot of suggestions
- Build quality is number one priority, but I really don't know of anything as strong as mdr v6 at a price of...
- Budget shouldn't be more than RM100.

I'm just getting something to wear around the house.
A quote on open headphones, for use during outside would be good too. But I think I'll just get portapros for open.
