What is pure Chinese like? China is so big there are many tribes. If you go to farming villages in Kelantan, you won't know if they are Chinese or Malay or Thai as they look almost the same. Malay here is so mixed with Arab, Chinese, Minangkabau etc. that you don't even know how pure Malay look like as well. My Malay primary school teacher used to ask this questions some 40 years ago as he also have mixed blood. My distant uncle who is a sergeant major in Ulu Kinta does not look like Chinese as well.

Gunmen force plucky fisherman to guide them to resort on Pulau Mabul, taken to army camp instead

KOTA KINABALU: A group of about 20 heavily-armed gunmen abducted a fisherman and demanded to be guided to a holiday resort on Pulau Mabul, Sabah, but were taken to an army camp on the island instead.

The incident began when the fisherman, who was in his boat, was approached by a speedboat off Pulau Umadal at about 6.30pm on Tuesday.

Garbed in dark clothes and armed with shotguns and pistols, the gunmen forced the fisherman to board their vessel and guide them towards Pulau Mabul where several resorts were located.

Upon approaching the island, the gunmen spotted a number of red lights on the shore, which fisherman said indicated the location of a resort.

As they got closer, the gunmen realised that it was a military camp and quickly turned their vessel around, heading towards Philippines waters.

The gunmen then spotted another fishing boat with eight men on board and forced them to board their vessel as well.

After several hours, one of the gunmen asked the nine fishermen what their race and religion were.

When told that all were Suluk and Muslim, the gunmen guided their boat close to another fishing vessel before ordering them to jump into the sea.

When contacted, Semporna district police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Firdaus Francis Abdullah said the incident occurred between 6.30 and 9.30pm on Tuesday.

"All victims were fishermen from around Semporna. As soon as they were freed and reached shore, they reported the incident to us,” he said.
"We are trying to determine where the group originated from based on the information from the abducted fishermen," Firdaus added.

Indonesia’s new military chief wants modern force

16 hours 11 min ago

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s new military forces chief, General Moeldoko, said yesterday that modernising the force’s military equipment would come first on his agenda, the official Antara News agency reported.

“I will prepare a working programme to modernise the military equipment,” Gen Moeldoko was quoted as saying.

He spoke after the House of Representatives endorsed President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s proposal to replace the outgoing Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI) — Admiral Agus Suhartono, who will soon retire — with Gen Moeldoko.

The announcement also came a day after visiting United States Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said the US would sell eight Apache attack helicopters, valued at US$500 million (S$642 million), to the TNI. Mr Hagel, who is currently in Brunei, on Sunday said the US had raised its allocation to finance and train militaries in South-east Asia. The “Asian pivot” is a signature policy of President Barack Obama’s administration.

Gen Moeldoko said he would also launch a programme to improve military education and its recruitment system. He said he hoped the House of Representatives would approve a proposal to increase remuneration for high-performing servicemen.

Last week, the army chief of staff passed an assessment by Commission I of the House of Representatives.

Mr Tubagus Hasanuddin, Deputy Chairman of the commission, said Gen Moeldoko is expected to modernise the military and strengthen its capability.

Gen Moeldoko also gave the assurance that the TNI would adopt a neutral position during legislative and presidential elections to be held next year. “If the TNI does not maintain neutrality, democracy will be undermined,” he said. AGENCIES

AFP, MILF join forces to hunt down new terror group in Mindanao

user posted image

MANILA, Philippines—The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has confirmed that “rogue elements”
from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Abu Sayyaf bandits in Mindanao have formed
a new group of terrorists in Mindanao.

Gen. Emmanuel Bautista, AFP chief, disclosed that members of the Khalifa Islamiyah Mindanao (KIM)
were among the suspects in the bomb attack in a commercial district in Cagayan de Oro City last month,
which left eight people dead and scores other wounded.

Bautista’s statement was the first time the military confirmed the presence of the group since the
police tagged it in the Cagayan de Oro explosion.

“Its members came from different groups, including some from Abu Sayyaf… This is a very small group,
” Bautista said in a forum of the Manila Overseas Press Club on Tuesday night.

“They are spoilers (of the peace process in Mindanao). Some of them were rogue elements of the MILF.
They formerly belonged to the MILF,” he told reporters after the forum.

Since Monday, he said MILF members had been helping soldiers in a joint operation to hunt down the
group in Central Mindanao where KIM members were reportedly seen.

“We are now pursuing them. They are mostly from Central Mindanao,” he said.

“We have operations on going jointly with the MILF to scour the areas in Mindanao, like in Mt. Kararao
complex for instance, to search for possible areas of the terrorist group… They are moving around.”

Bautista stressed that as of Wednesday, there were no indications yet that KIM members had reached
Metro Manila to sow terror.
