Hi all, it's me again  wave.gif

Looking for laptop with below specs:
1. Preferred Brand: Open to all recommendations
2. Budget: around RM3k
3. Usage: Movies, torrenting, net surfing and a lot of gaming (probably Dota2, Crysis1-3, blackops 2, etc)
4. Preferred laptop: Durable, must feel solid, no flimsy areas or LCD hinges like on some Acer and Dell models. i7 3rd gen, GT 700 series
5: Screen Size: 14" or 15.6"

I think I need a laptop for my daily gaming use. I have been used to desktops so I'm quite particular in CPU power / speed. Graphics wise, I would say I'd go for medium graphics on native resolution. (should not demand too much on my tight budget) tongue.gif
I've been following this thread for a while, and have set my eyes on the following:

ASUS S46CB 14 inch - http://sg.asus.com/Notebooks/Superior_Mobi...#specifications
Not quite sure about this cos it uses ULV processor, but the graphics is good. (GT 740M) Around RM 2500 ?

Lenovo Y400 14 inch - i7 QM + GT750m. Around RM2799
this definitely suit my needs but did some research and found that Lenovo Y400/Y500 QC seems to be inconsistent. Although this model is very very popular right now, I see that people do face some problems with drivers, touchpad, and wifi issues (disconnections). as I am using company Lenovo business laptop as well, I do have this issue too. seems to plague a lot of Lenovo models? if anybody here using this model, do you mind to share your experience? I would appreciate that.

Acer V3 15.6 inch -  i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT730M + (1920x1080 IPS). around RM 2899
Acer hmm.gif not a fan of Acer, but if the build quality is solid, can consider. GT 730M is not strong for the screen (1080p), or maybe it's me tongue.gif

Would need some help in deciding or some recommendations icon_question.gif and Thanks for the feedback guys!  notworthy.gif

Not many models with GT7xxM get released yet.
For your budget, you want "no flimsy areas or LCD hinges"? Nada tongue.gif (can only find this is Dell Latitude 6 / Precision, Lenovo Thinkpad T/W, HP Elitebook. Totally cannot flex the laptop anywhere, and have very solid hinges.)
Crysis 3 at native resolution? If you go for laptop with FHD screen (1920x1080), you will need GT750M or better to play at low pre-set details level.
If you use Lenovo business laptop (Thinkpad T series?) and has issues, you (or your IT) should contact Lenovo support immediately and get it sorted out. Your company is paying a bomb to get Lenovo warranty support for business laptop laugh.gif

Anyway, for your budget and your usage requirement, your best bet is the Lenovo Y series. Anything else is either too under-powered or too expensive for you.
Since you are coming from desktop environment, you may need to get used to how expensive gaming on laptop really is laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

no more Y580.
Y500 / Y400 now smile.gif
GT750M GDDR5 is 10-15% better than GTX660M according to benchmarks hmm.gif

Hi! Would appreciate a lot if you guys could give me some recommendation for laptops. smile.gif

1. Open to most brands.
2. RM3k - RM3.5k
3. I'm a multimedia designer. So heavy usage on website design, video editing & graphic design programmes. Programmes such as After effect, premiere pro, photoshop & etc..
4. Preferred specs are i7 processor, 8gb ram (or more), 1080p resolution screen size & 15.6" screen size laptop.

Thank for your time! smile.gif
*
Yup, you need i7 quad core, at least medium level GPU. Don't worry too much about RAM, 15" laptop normally has sufficient RAM slots for you to add RAM aftermarket (4G stick ~ RM80, 8G stick ~ RM200)

Acer
V3-571G-736b8G1T, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT730M(DDR3) + (1920x1080 IPS) @RM2899[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8 (nice IPS screen, see it to appreciate)

Asus
N56VZ-S4284H, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1920x1080) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 1TB, W8; color: black

Dell
Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB, backlit keyboard optional, W8

Lenovo
Ideapad Y500, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1920x1080)@RM3799, 4GB, 500GB, W8; GN36 exGPU, 120W & 170W AC adapter (the ultrabay GPU is a waste for you, but you could sell it to recoup RM500+)

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

1. Preferred Brand : Any
2. Budget : RM 2.5k
3. Usage : looking for a light laptop for mainly on-the-go video editing (Sony Vegas)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14-inch

I saw the new Dell Vostro 5460 (only 1.54kg) with the following specs:
Intel i5-3230M
Nvidia GT630M 2GB DDR3
4GB RAM (should be upgrade-able to 8GB)

Appreciate if any sifu(s) here can feedback if the specs above can run Sony Vegas comfortably for HD Video editing?
Mostly simple edits at 1080p and occasionally 2.7k...not much transitions/effects...

Thanks in advance!
*
the new Vostro 5460 is a very interesting machine.
Only has 1 RAM slot. If you want 8G RAM, you need to swap out the 4G RAM stick.
Has 2 system fans, dissipate heat pretty well for such slim body hmm.gif
Has a sub-woofer laugh.gif
But a glossy screen (major disappointment for me personally tongue.gif )

For Sony Vegas, the more powerful the CPU & GPU, the better laugh.gif
but an i5 M (don't go for the i5 ULV if you opt for Vostro 5460), and GT630M could get the job done.

Other alternative (not necessarily better)
Asus
K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
HP
Envy4-1238TX, i5-3337U + AMD HD8750M@RM2099[Beats][1.75kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8
Lenovo
Z400, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099, 4GB, 1TB, W8; 2 years warranty
Z400, i7-3632QM + Nvidia GT645M@RM2699, 4GB, 1TB, W8; backlit, 2 years warranty

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

ust to confirm, the i5 ULV would be the i5-3337U rite?
*
Yes, the ULV option for Vostro 5460 is the i5-3337U. The i5-3230M is a more powerful CPU.

I just notice something; you mentioned you plan to edit FHD (1080p) video on these machine? But the display on these 14" is only HD (1366x768) hmm.gif How will it work? tongue.gif (you can edit but you cannot see the result unless you connect to FHD external display)
You can only find laptop with FHD screen in 13" (mostly too underpowered for your purpose) or 15" (maybe too heavy for you tongue.gif)

Really? Gt750m better than gtx660m? Can u guys recommend me a full hd laptop with thoa gpu.. budget around rm2500-3200.. hardcore gamer with low budget.. :'(
*
Yes, if we are talking about GT750M spec with GDDR5, it is clocked higher than GTX660M. Coupling with Nvidia GPU Boost 2.0, the GT750M (GDDR5) outperform GTX660M (GDDR5).

FHD gaming laptop with GT750M at RM2500-3200? Nada tongue.gif
Closest is the Y500.

About the Vostro 5460, I'm thinking that the single slot with 8GB memory is quite limited. Based on ur previous recommendations, the Lenovo Z400 looks good ... and maybe a Lenovo E430 too...
*
Considered yourself warned: Z400 is not easy to maintain tongue.gif icon_rolleyes.gif You need to tackle 20+ screws, take out ODD, keyboard, in order to access the RAM or to clean dust laugh.gif

E430?
ThinkPad Edge E430, i5-3220M + Intel HD4000@RM2599[2.2kg], W7P/W8, 4GB, 750GB (5400rpm), anti-glare
ThinkPad Edge E430, i7-3632QM + Nvidia GT635M + 16GB mSATA+750GB HDD@RM3399[2.2kg], W7P/W8, 4GB, anti-glare

Unless you get a very good deal somewhere, the i7 QM & GT635M spec is out of your budget. The i5 M & HD4000 is restricted by the underpowered IGPU hmm.gif

Hi all sifus, I'm planning to get a new laptop at the middle of next month(may)

Previously a lot of people recommended me Lenovo y500 but still waiting for the new batch. So, I hope can have few different laptop with similar performance level so that I'm able to compare it.

1. Preferred Brand - except acer, any other brand also can

2. Budget - below rm 4 k

3. Usage - gaming, college work, web surfing

4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 15" inch

Thank in advance =))
*
I think you better wait for the new Y500 with GT750M SLI laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Anyway, alternatives:

Asus
G55VW-S1216H, i7-3630QM +Nvidia GTX660M (2GB) + (1920x1080)@RM3999[3.78kg], 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8

MSI
GE60-OND, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GTX660M + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM3899, 8GB, 1TB, W8, 2 years warranty, MSI gaming mouse & backpack

www.illegear.com
Illegear RE-15, i5-3210M + Nvidia GTX660M + (1920x1080)@RM3299, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i5-3210M - i7-3840XM][/color]

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

First time hearing of this brand.. but very interesting
Are you a distributor for illegear or must order direct from illegear?

1. Super Glossy IPS screen possible?
2. Does GPU matter for AutoCAD? (not going to use 3d features i think)
3. Can self-change hard disk to ssd? Or need to disassemble (void warranty) to change hdd?
*
Illegear is setup by a group of Malaysians to distribute Clevo barebone. Good warranty service.
Look for Prince J in LYN. He is from illegear. This is his thread:
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2613184

No, I am not related to illegear tongue.gif You can order online through illegear website. If you have any specific requirement that is not listed as options, can always chat with Prince J to find out more.

1. Prince J will be able to answer you smile.gif
2. If you don't do 3D, don't need Nvidia / AMD GPU. Intel HD 4000 could handle. But I'm not sure if illegear sell anything without GPU hmm.gif
3. Are you talking about illegear specifically? They have extensive customisation options, you can go SSD if you want, and their pricing on SSD is quite reasonable i think unlike major brands laugh.gif If you talk about other brands, usually changing HDD after-market will not void hardware warranty, as long as you don't tear any of those "warranty void if broken" seal.

Currently having dilemma in choosing these 2 laptops

Lenovo z500 & Asus S550cm

Lenovo
*i5 3210M (35watts) higher clockspeed
*nVidia gt645m
*15.6 non-touchscreen
* slightly bulkier

Asus
*i5 3317M (17watts) lower clockspeed
*nVidia gt635m
*15.6 touchscreen
*ultrabook category

Budget about Rm2500

Mostly for online and occasionally gaming

15" and above as I don't travel with it frequently.

*Will be bringing it to oversea therefore need a brand which provide best international warranty.

Mind advising..?  icon_rolleyes.gif  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Oversea where? smile.gif If US, then buy in US.
If UK, Australia, may also consider buy there, pay the GST, then claim back the tax when you travel back to Malaysia during holiday.

Otherwise, Asus with most models having 2 years International Warranty is a good pick. Alternatively, Dell, if you extend warranty to 3 years, also will become International Warranty.

Why don't you consider:
Asus
N56VZ-S3151H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT650M@RM2799[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 750GB, W8; color: black

Price is RSP, negotiable.
Better spec than the S55.
Not a good idea to get touchscreen in 15", the screen is heavy, and the hinge holding the screen and the keyboard base together may give way under too much poking poking.

Also, unless you have a very good reason (like you need the dedicated numpad), 15" HD screen give you the same image as 14" HD screen.

Will be going to US soon but I'm not familiar with there so will get it here first...  biggrin.gif
I will just put the laptop at room most of the time so I think 15 inch will be more comfortable for my eye.
N56 design and performance wise is okay but its slightly over budget... Might consider...  thumbup.gif

Buy it in US. They have crazy deal over there (like 50% off that kind of crazy laugh.gif ).
Also most brand give top notch warranty service in US.
Also a lot more choices. Almost all brands selling in US allow you to order online, with lots of customisation options. Even if you walk into malls, hypermarkets and IT specialist stores also has lots of good deals even during non-festive season.
You can also go to online store like Newegg or even Amazon which has amazing deal.

You can do all the research here. As soon as you touch down in US, make the order. Deliver to doorstep. Get used to the customer service in US thumbup.gif All those return policy that we can only dream off in Malaysia laugh.gif

S550CM belongs to ultrabook, ultrabook have higher price tag, that's normal.
Seriously Vivobook ultrabook series considered one of the cheapest ultrabook you can find in market already, if you can find any ultrabook below Rm1.8k 14 inch with i5 processor using Intel HD graphics, tell me
*
14" vivobook?
VivoBook S400CA-CA006H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB + (1366x768; touch)@RM2299[2kg], 4GB, W8
Not RM1.8k lah tongue.gif Those are 11.6" Vivobook.

Dell
Vostro 5460, i5-3337U + GT630M@RM2,199[1.54kg], 4GB, 32GB mSATA SSD + 500GB(5400rpm), W8SL, 3 cell
HP
Envy4-1238TX, i5-3337U + AMD HD8750M@RM2099[Beats][1.75kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8
Lenovo
S400, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM1999[1.8kg], 4GB, W7HB; AMD HD7450M/W8@RM2199

Other than the touchscreen, don't see how the 14" Vivobook is better than any of these tongue.gif

Also 15" "ultrabook" is a weird animal, if you really think about it. Not light. And battery performance is bad generally due to large screen but small battery.

I know there is no 1.8k ultrabook. My purpose is trying to clarify to XeactorZ that cannot compared with ultrabook with normal laptops, if so do it just like comparing a 5 inch phablet and 7 inch tablet. But why people still buy 5 inch phablet even some 7 inch tablet can make call? because of portability. Same goes to ultrabook.

Maybe this review will say how vivobook s400 compared with others

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-V...ok.84582.0.html

By the way, lenovo s400 with mSATA its price very nice, but review score still cannot compared with vivobook.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo...ok.83304.0.html

I not sure notebookcheck is bias or not, but they review every notebook with very detail, not just looking on performance only. I am not fan of Asus or what, and Asus S400 did have its own disadvantages like reflective screen, below average battery life etc. But on other side like temperature and noise, it really did quite well.

I know for many of the people thinks that vivobook s400CA price is not very good because it lacks of decent graphic cards, but forgive me I am the person who thinks that graphic card is not necessary. And I think that most lowyat members too much focusing on good graphic cards, maybe I am the only members who are neither gamers nor graphics user... but I have to say that, if someone like me don't play intensive games, why don't just throw away the graphic cards? It save your notebook weight , battery, noise and temperature.

But then actually I am dilemma between S400CA and Y580 too. i7 for such attractive price undeniably its quite a great bargain, plus so many USB3.0 slots, but is really bulky. Deciding a laptop is more mess than choosing a girls. Asus S400 is just like a sexy lady with sweet face, Lenovo Y580 is just like a fat-ass girl like Happy Polla but rich background. Hahaha
*
If you are just comparing the review of Lenovo S400 vs the VivoBook S400CA in notebookcheck, then you need to pay attention to these:
spec differ - the Lenovo review don't have a mSATA SSD. This drag down a lot of the score that related to performance. Lenovo S400 sold in Malaysia has mSATA SSD. Also the connectivity score of S400 in the review is very bad as it lack Gigabit LAN. Lenovo S400 sold in Malaysia has Gigabit LAN, iinm.

Notebookcheck is not bias, it is one of the best review site around. Readers of review need to pay attention to details though, don't just look at the "score" biggrin.gif

Thing about GPU: If it is not needed for a task, it is not in use. Nvidia Optimus ensure that GPU only kick in when needed. Otherwise ultrabook is running on the HD4000 IGPU.

GPU is not only useful for games. Apps that can utilise CUDA will use it to ramp up performance. Apps that run 3D effect will also benefit from it.

Forumers normally just recommend laptops based on user usage requirement.

A lot of users just need i3 with HD4000 smile.gif But as soon as they move into photoshop, autocad, video editing, ... then user will appreciate more powerful CPU.

Don't need a RAM stick that is 100% exactly the same smile.gif
RAM stick from different brands / different clock / latency .... will still work together.
The long route is download CPU-Z and look at its reading on the RAM. Then go out and buy something as close as possible laugh.gif
The easier route is just go and grab a 4G DDR3 1600 thumbup.gif

Hi guys,
Need ur advice for these two models in comparison:

DELL 7520-61412G-W8 I7-3612QM 4GB 1TB ATI AMD RADEON HD7730M 2GB 15.6" W8 RM2419

LENOVO Z500-5936-7000 i5-3230QM 4GB 1000GB DVDRW NV GT645 2GB 15.6" DVD W8 RM2149

The difference is the processors, graphics, and the price. Just asking, is it worth the RM300 extra?

both are on par with actually. sweat.gif
the extra RM300 means you get a quad core i7 processor than a dual core i5.

Not to forget:
the 1 year on-site warranty service from Dell vs 2 year send to SC International warranty from Lenovo tongue.gif

Whether it is worth it to spend the money to get more powerful i7 is up to your usage: Do you require an i7 quad core?
If not, RM300 is better spend on a 128G SSD laugh.gif

Usage:  best laptop for architecture because it need computer Very much such like software :  sketchup , 3D max ,photoshop

You will appreciate i7 quad core, FHD screen (more work space), 8G RAM. Discrete GPU will help on 3D Max.
SSD - 128G ~ RM300+, 256G ~ RM600+. Better to buy after-market and swap with HDD as laptop brands charge high price for SSD.

Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB, backlit keyboard optional, W8
Vostro 3560, i7-3632QM + AMD HD7670M + 32GB SSD + 750GB(7200rpm) HDD + (1920x1080)@RM3209[2.57kg], 8GB, W7HB; colors: red/silver/bronze

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Can also consider this:
Acer
V3-571G-736b8G1T, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT730M(DDR3) + (1920x1080 IPS) @RM2899[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8

Hi guys, the new Dell Vostro 5460, i5 3230M, 4GB, GT630M - RM2099, worth the price?
*
Nice laptop. Good deal for the spec. Slim and thin and light.
Caveat:
Only 1 RAM slot.
Glossy screen (even though it is Vostro)
No ODD. No VGA port.
