GE13: Affordable housing a priority for Barisan, says Najib

KLANG: Affordable housing is a priority for Barisan Nasional as it not only encourages home ownership, but helps to generate personal wealth as well, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Barisan chief said that over the next few years, one million affordable houses will be built by various agencies, government-linked companies (GLCs) and private developers.
"It doesn't matter who builds them as long as the pricing falls under the bracket of affordability.
"If we leave it to market forces, it would be impossible to sell the homes between RM150,000 and RM400,000," he said at the launch of Sime Darby's affordable housing project in Bandar Bukit Raja here.
Najib said a house is one of the most valuable assets an individual can have, and the property could appreciate in value.
"A RM300,000 house may be worth RM600,000 in a few years. This is our concept. We don't only provide affordable housing, but we generate personal wealth for the individual," he said.
Sime Darby launched the first phase of houses Friday, comprising 321 double-storey terrace houses.
Najib, on behalf of Sime Darby, announced that the buyers would get a RM20,000 discount on the houses, bringing the price down to RM380,000.
Once the second and third phases of the project are completed in 2016, there will be a total of 2,090 units of affordable housing in Bandar Bukit Raja, he said.
Najib also announced further goodies to the people, including a new hospital to be built in Kapar by Sime Darby.
He said the markets in Meru and Kapar would be upgraded, while a building will be constructed to house the North Klang district police headquarters.
Currently, the district police headquarters is located in a block of shoplots.
