Just got home and did a quick test out of curiosity.  With same shutter speed I observe same brightness between these settings F3.5@ISO3200 and F1.4@ISO800.

Hey thanks for the test man. So yeah that means with 1.4 I could use lower ISO thus lower noise. But I'll try using the flash with some DIY diffuser if this works then I'll save my $ for something else.. thumbup.gif

If I'm not already lifting weights in the gym, I would consider lugging the weight with my trips. flex.gif So basically the choices are

Oly 9-18 = RM2k
Pan 7-14 = RM3k
Samyang Fish 7.5 = RM1k

Guys, some questions about this shot.

I shot a bridge lit with bright beautiful lights at night from a beach. I got my ISO to 200(lowest), Aperture to F22 and 40 secs exposure. Focal length is 20mm.

My end result is noisy as below. My setup is EPL3 + 14-42mm.

My question is, why would I still get this much noise when I shot at lowest ISO and on a tripod with long exposure?

The noise is due to the long exposure you did with your camera.
*
So it was too long? If yes, I'll do more tests tomorrow night with some exposures. Shame, that's one of my favorite few shots.

Bro, just turn on Long Exposure Noise Reduction in the menu. It must be turn all the time because long exposure noise cannot be fixed in post. It will modify your raw file too. What it did is take another photo with the shutter closed (called dark frame) using the same exposure and use it to remove the noise.

You can try this -
1. Set to manual focus
2. With the lens cap on, shoot something with 30 seconds with Long Exposure Noise Reduction off
3. Shoot another with Long Exposure Noise Reduction on

You will get the idea.

Also, NEVER shoot f22 with m43. The max you will got is f8 and best is to stick to f4 and below. Diffraction kicks in very early for m43 and that's why photo become very very soft. To get long exposure, you need an ND filter.
*
Great thanks for the info. I got the same feedback as well from other sources. I'll be testing tonight. From my understanding, LENR will double the exposure time right? Like for my case 40 secs + 40 secs correct?

Yeah I'll try everything on a tripod. Shame, I actually was on my Korea vacation for that shot. Now I'm not sure if I'll ever get that chance again.

Current user of E-pl3 with kitlens. I'm wondering if it's worth the money for me to get an EM5 body. Mostly due to the EVF and improved IQ.

Here are some of my noob attempts using the 14-42 kitlens. Definitely not as impressive as yours man. Did you shot those with 14-42?

Nice shots, your "noob attempt" doesn't look any bit nooby at all rclxms.gif Really nice

Thanks man. I'm still contemplating whether to get wider lens or a better body. I think 14-42 is kinda narrow for some landscape. I just can't really capture the feel that I'm trying to get. Or maybe I'm just not as good as BOTAK_WAI

edit: LOL I tried to find a good landscape photo to show... Found out I have none sad.gif

The body or lens first argument is seen like the chicken & egg analogy but to me, a lens is more important than the body (no, i don't intend to start a war here no no sweat.gif ) simply because a lens is more useful than the body it is attached to, just like those cult manual focus lenses of yester years that is still capable of fetching unbelievable prices because of their unique characteristics, irrespective of which body they are mounted to.

A better body only when you have progressed beyond what your current camera body can allow, for example, you want to shoot low light, a newer body will definitely gives a better advantage than an old body, or probably you want faster shutter speed for fast-action shots, a newer body will most always gives you better speed than your old one, so on & so forth.

No harm getting a newer body if you find a fantastic deal though.

QUOTE(mingyuyu @ Nov 28 2014, 11:25 PM)
agreed, i was stuck between em1+1442 or em10+1240, end up go for the second one. no regret so far, the 1240 is a fantastic lens and very nice to use. can't say the same thing if I went for the 1442 though, since a lens affect an image more than a body does (other than high ISO and focus tracking).
*
I totally understand that a good body doesn't mean much without good lens. I've often suffer quite a lot when it's getting dark while traveling. Most shots requires me to jack up the ISO a lot to get a usable image but the noise is very apparent.

Another point is that an UWA lens costs a bomb. Cheapest 7-14 is at least RM2k right?
