well actually i started this topic in the "nikon fans" forum but planned to put it in the main forum so everyone can share ideas.

so besides the cf n sd card, what other big difference between the D50 n D70s? n whats the market price for D50 now (KL)? any good honest shop to recommend? i dun wanna get 'fried" if u know what i mean sweat.gif

i know D50 is cheaper compared to D70s but if the difference in terms of body built is too big than better off getting a D70s. but if the difference is just minor stuffs...well a D50 should be ok.

really need some help from DSLR pros icon_question.gif sweat.gif

The D50 lacks many important features. The lack of DOF preview is a problem for people who want to shoot macros, close-ups and other focus-sensitive applications. The lack of mirror-lockup makes it hard to shoot on a tripod without killing the mirror's initial vibration.

Other than that, the D50 also lacks the D70's wireless flash commander capabilities. The D50's burst rate is slower, but can burst for more shots, if this feature matters to you at all.

The D50's kit lens also leaves you wanting more, compared to the D70's kit lens. All in all, the D50 could have been a great value product, but sadly it lacks too many serious tools.

thnx a lot for the info! smile.gif i think i'll survey around KL to ask for the best price for both of the cameras

actually the D50 price is really tempting...i checked www.nikon.com.my n it only cost RM 3118 for the body n the..."not so good" lens tongue.gif but i dunno now market price is how much so any guide guys?

but i tried to compare the 2 of the cameras n found nothing much of a difference except for auto white balance, the card type etc (lazy to list out)

sigh...really kinda blur now... shakehead.gif any advise?

D70 has no mirror lockup too la. the one in its options is only for cleaning purposes. tongue.gif The main differences is that the D70S can finetune WB, has 1/3 stop increments in ISO (D50 is in full stops) and the D70S' inbuilt flash has commander mode. Oh, CF vs SD too. I'd go for the D70S if only for the CF support.

Can the D50 embed EXIF comments like the D70? Also, can the D50 be uploaded with custom curves like the D70? I'm not very sure about these finer features ...

The D50 AF-S DX 18-55mm ED kit lens is not all that bad. It focuses reasonably fast and silently for a budget lense. It's sharp and doesn't have as much distortion at 18mm wide compare to the D70 kit lens AF-S DX 18-70mm.

You find more info of D50 at : D50 Review

QUOTE
D50 COMPARED TO D70 and D70s

The D50 improves on the D70 and D70s by:

1.) Adjusting ISO directly in full stops, not cumbersome thirds.

2.) Self timer and remote control options are now set with their own button instead of through the drive mode control. (You lose the meter mode button to get this.) This is the washed-out button in my photo of the top of the D50.

3.) New AF-A mode automatically selects AF-S or AF-C modes for you. You may still select the AF-S and AF-C modes just like the D70 and D70s. There's no icon displayed for this mode since the LCD which would display this new mode is simply the LCD from the D70 and D70s which has no such icon. This is an advantage for tyros for whom the D50 is designed and transparent to serious photographers.

4.) A new default ISO control mode has the camera choose the ISO in the scene modes. You can turn this off to set your own ISO in the scene modes which is how previous cameras worked. The Auto ISO function is also available as with the D70 and D70s. See pages 91 - 92 of the manual for more. This is an advantage for my mom for whom the D50 is designed and transparent to photographers.

5.) Cutesy in-camera ability to copy and resize photos for email to 640 x 480, 240 x 320 and 160 x 120 pixels.

6.) Lower Price.

7.) Less Weight.

8.) Smaller size.

What's missing compared to the D70 and D70s that I'd miss a little:

1.) No White Balance fine-tuning. You can do this through bracketing, but that's cumbersome. If you care about this as I do get the D70s; 99% of people will never miss this.

2.) No front (secondary) command dial. That's OK, the D50 also lacks the WB fine tuning you adjusted with this dial. To adjust the aperture in manual exposure you hold the aperture button (same as the exposure compensation button) while turning the command dial. I prefer this in A and S modes since I never can remember which knob to turn on my D70; on the D50 it's always the one command dial that does it.

3.) No ability to use the built-in flash for remote control of external flash. To do this you'd need to buy an SU-800 or SB-800 for a few hundred dollars, which makes no sense. If you use this feature (I do) just get a D70 or D70s. I have a whole page explaining this here.

4.) No viewfinder grid. I would miss this, most people won't.

5.) SD vs. CF memory cards. Again, better for a tyro whose point-and-shoot probably took these. Bad for pros since we all have pockets full of CF cards, in fact, for a pro the price difference between the D50 and D70s is about the price of a few new SD cards.

6.) No ability to set the lowest shutter speed used with flash in P and A modes. I do set my camera to 1/15 or 1/8 instead of the usual defaults of about 1/60.

7.) No AF area selector lock button. I rarely use this and it bugs me when I do, so no big deal.

8.) Won't work with MS-D70 battery holder for disposable CR2 batteries. Even though the D50 uses the same EN-EL3 rechargeable, there is a pin on the MS-D70 that corresponds to a hole in the D70 and D70s. To jam it into the D50 you'd have to take a pair of dykes to the MS-D70, but don't do that since the MS-D70 puts out a higher voltage than the EN-EL3 for which the D70 and D70s can compensate and the D50 can't. The EN-EL3 makes 7.4V while the MS-D70 pumps out 9V. I do keep an MS-D70 in my bag if my rechargeable ever dies on me, which has never happened in over a year of use.

9.) 2.5 FPS compared to D70's and D70s' 3 FPS.

10.) No prophylactic LCD cover. I suggest using a conventional stick-on one cut to size like these here so you simply may replace the cover, and not the camera, when you scratch it up.

11.) No illumination of top numeric LCD panel. In the dark use the menus and see them on the rear color LCD.

12.) No depth-of-field preview button. No big deal, 99% of photographers don't even know what this button does even if the D50 had it.

13.) No top LCD illuminator. You'll have to bring a flashlight or rely only on the viewfinder shooting in the dark.

14.) No two-finger FORMAT CARD buttons. You have to go into a menu. Pros refoprmat a card every time they use it. We don't just erase the images. We reformat because it eliminates any potential for data errors and other weird things that can accumulate over time without reformatting.

What's missing that I never used on my D70 anyway:

1.) Only 1/4,000 top shutter speed compared to 1/8,000. Not important; I've never even used 1/4,000 on any of my cameras.

2.) The D50 loses the hard button for bracketing. One has to use a menu instead.

3.) No custom function for setting exposure compensation without having to press the +/- button. No big deal, the default is just hold the +/- button and turn the command dial like every other Nikon DSLR.

4.) No ability to change the diameter of the center weighted meter (Note to Nikon: specs on page 130 claim this feature however there is no way to set it in the menus on page 96).

5.) No ability to set the order of bracketing.

6.) No ability to allow your selection of AF areas to wrap around when you go off one end.

7.) No ability to turn off the "use flash" symbol in the viewfinder.

8.) No meter mode button. I never use center or spot meters, but if you do you now have to go find them in a menu. The meter button of the D70 and D70s is now the self timer and remote control button on the D50, which I prefer.

SUMMARY

The Nikon D50 is a great camera for basic photographers, non-photographers or backup. Image quality is identical to the D70 and D70s, which means brilliant 12 x 18" prints that many people confuse with prints from a medium format film camera. Most people will never miss the few features I would, so if you don't have any idea what I'm talking about in my comparisons get a D50 and you'll love it.

But if you have the $$$. Go for the D70s lah. I am saving up to upgrade pretty soon. rclxms.gif

rclxms.gif not bad not bad. seems that i have found what i want smile.gif

i'm a normal photographer who shoots photo as a hobby so i think D50 is enough for me. anyway, anyone know how much is D50 body only? hopefully it is below 2500 blush.gif

i planned to get myself the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6 G ED since its kinda cheap. any suggestion? my budget for the lens is about 1000 sad.gif or maybe should i just stick back to the 18-55mm lens provided?

is that the lens fitted in the D70s kit?

yar my friend oso recommend me that lens but if D50 + that lens then the price should be almost equal to the D70s with the lens(correct me if i'm wrong...still kinda blur with the price) tongue.gif

Sure you haven't considered something other than the big two?

If you're not prone to collecting lenses, and don't already have a whole store of some, and can focus yourself on the hobby (ok la, give and take some occasional indulging), why not try more stuff for comparison?

Ever thought of an 18-55 that can do good close focus, hmm? Handles better than the DX 18-55 (and the 18-70 as well, imho), non-rotating barrel, and can do autofocus-then-manual-override (usefulness depends on whether you have such need, but it's there), hmm?

I don't usually make recommendations, but I'm feeling happy laugh.gif The trick being, it may be possible for you to get such a package at similar, or lower prices. Hehe.

More importantly, is that your choice makes YOU happy smile.gif

For the telephoto lens forget the 55-200 and get a sigma 70-300 instead.
Longer range and better resale value.

D70s comes with a very good lens aledi.. no need to worry about not satisfied with 18-55 and then dumping it off for 200 odd bucks and hunting for 18-70.

The f4.5 (at 70mm) is better than f5.6 (55mm) where the AF is at its minimum working limits.

Well, apart from $, i do feel that for the D70s u need to PS quite abit to get nicer results. D50 doesn't seem to suffer this trait. Might just be me though.. havent really heard of other people complaining this sad.gif

cfyung85,

Nikon D50 price is around RM2500-2700/- in the market. Depend on the bundle package like size of SD card, tripod, screen protector, camera bag and etc. You have to go out and source for the bargain. On the lens maybe you can directly go for the fast lens like 3rd party tokina 80-200 f2.8. 2nd hand is also below 1k I guess. Or a better midrange Sigma 24-70 f2.8 (Around 1k++) since you already have your dad super tele lense.

Advantage of DSLR is fast shutter and focus. Longer Batt life (400-2000 shot per charge) and cleaner image and low noise at higher ISO. My brother is using the FZ30 aswell. After tinkering with my D50 he got poisoned, considering to sell off his FZ30 and get the D70s or the 350d now. rclxms.gif

The price is bundle with the 18-55mm kit lens. Prepare to pay by cash if you want to save more else they charge you 2.5-3% for credit card.

Recommend you get the 50mm f1.8 lens aswell. Very good for potrait. biggrin.gif

Yes it's around the price of RM700... key colour mid valley sells it icon_idea.gif If you're talking about 70-200 F2.8 thats a different story tongue.gif This sigma 70-300 is F4-5.6 APO DG with a 1:2 macro mode.

yea. Non APO version is cheaper right?

I would sugget get the D70s kit straight tongue.gif but D50 got its own stength (and weakness too tongue.gif)

the only thing i can advice is to go to camera shop and test both camera by yourself and you judge it.

Just went to camera shop to test D200 (pretending 1 2 buy it tongue.gif) and it feel so good in my hand.. POISON~! but already got D70s tongue.gif so no point hungering for another camera (for the moment)

D200?? well i wont be poisoned by that camera since i dun have the cash doh.gif biggrin.gif

2500-2700 for the body n lens...not bad icon_idea.gif

the only thing that i'm not satisfied with the D50 is the loss of the 2nd dial to adjust the aperture since i almost everytime use manual exposure in my FZ30 so i'm used to use the 2 dials. now have to press the aperture button while turning the dial. hope i'll get used to it blush.gif

well i still dunno whether i wanna use a 3 rd party lens or not. of course it'll be cheaper compared to genuine nikkor lenses tongue.gif

finally able to sneak n touch my dad's cam...well his lens is the AF micro nikkor 105mm 1:2.8 thats all that is written on the lens. dunno what is that oso doh.gif

well today i went to all the 3 places (sungei wang, times square n low yatt) to ask for the prices for D50 n D70s. the price i asked was the standard package which has nothing but the camera n the lens only (no memory cards, bag, filters bla bla bla)

n the price i asked havent been bargained yet. means that i just went in, get the price, say thank you n run back out biggrin.gif

among the shops i asked are Bintang Maju Commercial, Nepmatic, myKamera.com, Foto Shangrila, Foto Flash, Fotokem, Enata, FS, Boeing n Tarita

bascially i can say only Bintang Maju Commercial in times square offer the "body only" package which only got the body with no lens but the price is kinda expensive. u can just forget about it blush.gif

i'll only post the cheapest n most expensive price i found since i feel that listing out all the prices of the shops is troublesome n it might affect the shop reputation a little. i'll oso list the shops which gave the best service n the worst service

cheapest for D50 - Foto Shangrila in sungei wang lower ground floor - RM 2400 (body+lens only)

cheapest for D70s - Tarita (G119) in sungei wang ground floor - RM 3450 (body+lens only)

most expensive for D50 n D70s belongs to the same shop which is Fotokem in low yatt which is RM2800 for the D50 n RM3800 for the D70s. but their service is not bad anyway smile.gif

price range for D50 - RM 2400-RM2800
price range for D70s - RM 3450-RM3800

among all the shop i went, Foto Shangrila gave me the best service since they just welcome me into their shop with open arms (without even judging thru my physical appearance...u'll understand later) even when i say i just wanna ask for the camera price. they r quite busy at that time oso. n they r oso the 1 offering the best price for D50. good job! rclxms.gif

the shop which gave the worst service...Enata in low yatt (sorry to say sad.gif ). when i went in, not even a single salesman say a "hi" to me or "how may i help u". all just ignore me n nod their head down. maybe its due to my clothing (i wear short pants, lousy pasar malam t-shirt n a pair of sandals). then when i ask for the price, their voice like wanna die like that (wan to tell dun wan to tell). i can barely hear what they say. in fact there is no customer at that time oso. sigh...looks does matters sad.gif

so after today's scouting, i really need to rethink which 1 i wanna buy sad.gif D50 price is tempting but D70s oso not bad due to the extra features n a better lens at only 1000 dollars more expensive, sigh...but most prob i'll get the D70s but better count my money first. my wallet will anytime be admitted to the hospital due to excessive "blood leakage" biggrin.gif

the warranties for camera bodies are usually only for the country that you bought it at. you might want to consider that factor into your purchase.

i went to boeing yesterday afternoon and i get quoted for the following

Canon 350D with KIT LENS = RM2950.00
Additional Original Battery = RM230.00

Nikon D70S with Kit lens = RM3450.00
Additional Original Battery - RM180.00

Extra

1GB CF (normal speed) = RM180.00
1GB CF highspeed = RM330.00

I tested both camera and i found that D70s kit lens does much better than a 18-50mm can do on a 350D.

From what i heard from the person, he recommend me 350D due to the DIGICII processor that canon possessed rather than the D70S. The color outcome is differ a lot when a photo taken. Brilliant color i would say on the canon and while on the nikon side, some photoshopped is needed.

Tell me what price u get quoted.

the price is OK since it is RM100+- is reasonable

cfyung85.

the standard package does comes with a battery. What i put up there is additional battery.

hehe.. hope can solve the confusion here.

how ori is the 'ori' bag? tongue.gif if its real ori nikon it shud have a warranty card and all. hehe. anyway its probably that generic medium sized bag with a plastic nikon logo they've been tossing in ever since the D70 came out (i bought mine from them)

count me in also la..

i also thinking gonna get either 350D or D70s... still can't make a decision yet though i molest both of them and both satisfied me but currently is more towards 350D due to not wanting to post process each photo.

if we all buy together i think will be more cheaper right? If more cheaper then good man..

We can RAMAI-RAMAI go and to count the $$... it would be HUGE 10G for boeing on that very day.

i can buy maybe mid april/end of may like that.. now pocket still full of blood after invest ICE in my car ( should have invest on SLR )

yeah...D70s is kinda hard to find sometimes. some shops oso everytime no stock sad.gif

i can buy around end of april oso. wanna build some cash n 1 shot sapu everything tongue.gif

anyway if between 350D n D70s i would go for D70s since 350D is kinda small but performance wise...very hard to say...but mostly r siding 350D
1 using CCD another 1 using CMOS...
1 6mp another 1 8mp...
1 ISO 200 another 1 ISO 100 (minimum)... rclxub.gif
but i still side the "Dark Side" tongue.gif

the flash SB600 if 1st hand oso need 800 bucks but can only reach ISO 1000... blush.gif but if u got the cash then can spend maybe another 500 to get the SB800 tongue.gif

but i think i'll go again this coming saturday n ask boeing c whether they can give discount KAU KAU if we buy lots of camera (different types) or not biggrin.gif

i am thinking.. if i can buy d50 body only and buy the d70s's kit lens separately then would be cheaper right?
anyone can go and ask for the d50 body only price?

My fren got jalan to get D50,D70s from Japan. and it is much more cheaper..
about RM2134 and RM3151 respectively and all include kit lens.

so the main problem.. the warranty is it apply to Malaysia as well.

but its kinda hard to find a shop that only sell D50 body only. i scouted all the camera shops in SG, times square n low yatt for 2++ hours n only BINTANG MAJU COMMERCIAL sell D50 body only. that oso cost RM2380

if like that better add 20/70 bucks go buy the D50 with 18-55mm lens. n it is oso not much of a difference if u buy D50 body then cantum the 18-70mm lens since that lens not cheap oso...maybe >800++. i saw in www.nikon.com.my DX 18-70mm lens cost >1200 bucks sad.gif

How secure and genuine is the jalan? If the warranty is OK from Nikon then shouldn't be any problem for us.

BTW, one important thing i forgot to tell u guys..

the BOEING sales person told me that CANON 350D is from japan while the Nikon D70s is from THAILAND!!

KRW > Ken Rockwell. Apparently he likes the 18-55 better than the 18-70. KenRockwell.com.

Anyway, yeah, it's hard to find d50 body only. What's the cheapest price around ar? I'm here in ioi mall, puchong and the shop here selling for RM2500 with the lens kit. Without bargaining. So, when bringing in the Japan one?

haha.. i'm looking at

EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

how much does it cost? No $$ to buy f2.8. so have to look for other alternative.

Haha my sister is the president of her school's Photography Club! Right now she's only shooting with a Sony S60, but she's always complaining about its poor close-focusing ability. So I told her to work hard and she'll get something better one day ...

PS: D70s made in Japan? But the D70 was supposedly made in Thailand too right?

Doesn't matter Japan or Thailand lar. As long as it does what it's supposed to. My camera's made in the Phillipines, and my lenses made in Vietnam. And my sister doesn't need a true macro lens yet lar - a Sigma DC 17-70 should do, with its 20cm close-focusing abilities. Let her learn the SLR art first.

first first i oso wanna get the D50 bcos it is 1000 bucks cheaper (tempting right? tongue.gif ) but after thinking, thinking n thinking, i think i rather go for the D70s instead bcos it is full of features compared to D50 n it came with a good lens 18-70mm lens. although in my opinion, the only thing i'm not satisfied with the D50 n EOS350D oso is the lost of the front dial. i love the 2 dials in my FZ30 so i'm used to using both of them in manual exposure smile.gif

D50 came with 18-55mm lens but dunno whether it can satisfy u or not. a lot of people say it wont satisfy someone for long. sooner or later gonna change to other lens oso. mostly all change to the D70s lens which is 18-70mm. but that lens oso cost bout 900 bucks for first hand sweat.gif

but anyway choice is still up to u to decide smile.gif if u feel that the D50 18-55mm lens is enough for u then u can consider D50. but if u plan to change to a better lens might as well get the D70s bcos it oledi comes with a good lens biggrin.gif

DOF preview is critical for anyone interested in macro photography - not always pros. The DX 18-70 is a good lens - if you can afford it, by all means go for it. I find the range of a 18-55 range to be about enough for a kit lens, and I especially like the size savings.

Buy D50 first, master it d move up D200/D2X, dun bother the D70s.
Important is the glass, not the plastic!
RM1000 can buy a pretty good flash plus a 50mm prime.

About Rm700-800 for an sb-600. Then RM350-400 for the prime.

But that's besides the point. I really could use the flash commander feature. And in order to do that, I need to either get an sb800 + another slave or su-800 commander + another slave. Either way, the cost about the same as getting a d70s. This is an important feature for me. And from what I've heard, d2x doesn't have this feature either. Hehe.

As for glass, yeah it's important and i'm already planning the 'upgrade' path. Hehe. But the 18-55/70 kit lens is fine with me to start with but I'd rather just get an all rounder 18-200vr, a prime and a wide angle.

Anyone selling their d70(s)? =)

sorry noob here...wanna ask few questions, why u guys said 18-55 is not enough to use then the 18-70? Is it in terms of not enough in macro or telephoto that you guys mentioned?
Another question is, if i use normal film AF lenses in DSLR, what is the different between those lenses wif digital lenses?? rolleyes.gif

Yeah ... is it the lens can't do much, or the photographer can't do much with the lens? Kekeke ...

And how do you expect the D2X to have remote flash commander feature when it doesn't even have a pop-up flash? Why is this feature so important anyway? Are you thinking of setting up a studio using a bunch of SB-800s? tongue.gif

Important to me because I use a lot of flash photography and moving the flash off the camera wirelessly is rather handy. No, not setting up studio with a bunch of sb-800. Hehe. Though I'm also interested in portraiture photography. (did i spell that right?)

Portraiture? In a studio-type environment can lar ... But out in the open? You're better off with a flash bracket and chord. The wireless communications takes some time too ...

Why are so many people interested in the 18-200 VR? Seems like a rather optically compromised lens. I'd wait to see what the Sigma DC 17-70 with its 20cm focusing ability can do, as well as a bunch of other lenses. Not a big fan of high zoom factor lenses - they're almost always optically compromised in one way or another ...

i want to buy too!
i will buy Nikon D2X,AFS 17-35mm,AFS 70-200mm VR, AFS 200-400mm VR,AF 85mm
*
wa...u serious?? or r u just joking?? shocking.gif the camera alone can kill all my life savings liao doh.gif

oh ya...by the way, richx, wanna join us for the camera shopping trip?? smile.gif heard u said u wanna buy a D50 for your sister smile.gif

anyway, if for me a D70s n a SB600/800 is enough liao smile.gif for me i take more potrait shots than telephoto/makro so 18-70mm is sufficient oledi wink.gif n i heard some arguments on 18-55mm lens n 18-70mm lens sweat.gif

so how do u wanna compare these 2 lenses? rclxub.gif i oso dunno... blush.gif try la...

well...the simple first, 1 can only reach 55mm(about 82.5mm on a 35mm camera based on nikon 1.5x factor) n another 70mm(about 105mm on a 35mm camera). so 18-70mm can zoom more (should be doh.gif )

2nd...the min aperture value for 18-70mm is 3.5-4.5
for 18-55mm is 3.5-5.6...in my opinion kinda not so good for makro shots since the min f at 55mm is only 5.6. u have no choice but to have the front n back of the object u wanna take to be in focus a bit rather than throwing everything front n back of the object out of focus. kinda hard to explain actually...have to c more photography books where they teach how to shoot makro at different aperture rclxub.gif need some photos to compare oso blush.gif n of course at 5.6 u have to use a slower shutter speed since the aperture has become smaller (flash oso can la). okla in simple words really need to test the 2 lens then only u know. but 18-55mm is sufficient for normal usage actually

n ferox/cyberkid...u guys sure u wan D50 + 18-200mm VR lens?? both of these combine together can almost buy the D200 (body) liao sweat.gif

so richx?? wanna join us?? the more the merrier thumbup.gif

Nah I'm not buying anytime soon lar. My sister's sitting for SPM end of this year only - and results coming out long after that - I just want to know what kind of prices the items can get for - have to plan my savings! But I might not get her a D50 due to lack of DOF preview - and my sister is primarily a macro shooter, so it might be important to her!

When is it anyway? I wouldn't mind meeting up for yumcha/chit-chat with you guys if I can make it. Friday~Sunday I'll be away to Kota Bahru with my family tho ...

do you plan to get a closeup filter? that thing wont do macro on its own. tongue.gif btw max aperture is mostly irrelevant in macro photography because most of the time you'd want MORE dof, not less. smile.gif macro lenses are designed to be sharpest stopped all the way down to minimum aperture. wink.gif

Yup. "Studio-type" environment. Anyway, why would you say flash bracket and chord is better? I would imagine wireless is the way to go - don't have to 'tangle' with wires.

Wei, what kinda reasoning is that? What am I going to do with a d200 body without a lens and without anymore money? =) But seriously considering changing to d70s. I'm trying to source for 2nd hand.

Because flash + bracket + the right length cord is more manueverable. If you want a real studio setup, get real studio strobes ...

Just remember that eventually its the system that you are buying into.

If you are considering Canon and on a budget, you could get the EF 24- 85mm f3.5/4.5 USM. With a bigger budget, you have other options like the
EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS , EF-S 17-85mm f4/5.6 IS, EF 28-135mm f3.5/5.6 IS USM. Either of these lenses would cover photographing 'flowers, landscape and the occasional portrait'

Or if you have even more, the L lenses are always there. Or if you have even more than that, there are always German objectives such as Leica, Carl Zeiss etc which you can attach by means of adapters...

For nearer focus, you can always obtain the EF12 / 25 II extension tubes. Or a close up filter if you have limited finances.

Filter? For landscape probably all you need is a polarizer.

what does a polarizer do?

And btw,

IS there a filter that can actually make gradient in the sky? Make the blue darker and the rest remains and not blueish?

this have to depend on whether the shop wanna give us reasonable price or not sweat.gif if they keep on putar belit n keep on saying "i only untung sikit-sikit ar" (the most stupid excuse shopkeepers will use doh.gif ) then most probably cannot make it liao sad.gif have to buy seperately... sad.gif

but most probably can get a nice price drool.gif especially with cyberkid's fren's D200 joining in tongue.gif if they still dun wanna give then nvm la...their loss cool.gif

yes.. this is what i'm looking for.

How much does one cost? And is there different types of polarizer?
*
The cost of a polarizer depends on the filter size (which again depends on your lens), whether it is multi coated or not, the material/ tecnology they use, and the manufacturer. For example a good polarizer of size 58mm might cost you, say RM200? I usually don't use a polarizer because it makes the sky look artificial.

Man, so many of you are getting Nikon. No one considering Canon? flex.gif

Which model of EOS u're uing? 350d? What do think o it?

Somebody i know once told me before, whether it's a canon or a nikon it doesn't really matter, how the pictures looks like all depends on the user. Of course there is some small diff.

Yes I use the 350D. It just about fits into my hand when I grip it; it could be slightly bigger but I'm not complaining. I still want full frame though (my friend poisoned me with his 5D, the idiot laugh.gif ), but that might be some time off. Its a light SLR (my friend's Canon F1 weighs a ton in comparison) as you probably know, and has served me well during my travels.

Pair it with a good killer lens and you'll get crisp, sharp images. If you have the eye for photography as well, your images will be nothing short of impressive. My Nikon using friends especially are stunned (the first few times anyway) when they see the saturation and sharpness of pictures taken with L lenses. A good camera is still nothing without a good lens!

i.e. at the end of the day, it is also the system you're getting into. It is no longer about, do I want the 30d/ d70s/ 7D? It should be, do I want to get involved with Canon/ Nikon/ KM/ Hasselblad/ Mamiya. Because many of the lenses/ accessories are interchangable between camera models (EF-S withstanding), unlike prosumers where you are essentially 'locked in' to your purchase. When you upgrade from a d50 to a d2x (you would have probably invested too much to make a complete switch between systems), the lenses you own will probably still be there (maybe even better ones). You are still with the same system!

I would advise you all to do more research before you make your purchase, if you haven't yet. I'm wondering how many of you are 'going with the flow' and just decided on Nikon because it appears that everyone here is getting it!

I have a question: when they mention tripod, what tripod do you get? Some flimsy RM100 generic tripod? Velbon? Manfrotto? Gitzo? A simple 'one piece' tripod? Or body + ball head/ pan & tilt head? Weight/ stability/ supported weight of the tripod? Plastic /aluminium/ carbon fibre? There's a lot to a tripod, in case you have not realized it...

Decided to change from a d50 to a d70(s) only because of the flash commander system. So, with an extra RM1000 more, I get:

1. DOF preview
2. Flash commander
3. Viewfinder gridlines
4. White balance fine tuning
5. 2nd command dial
6. 0.5 FPS more
7. LCD plastic cover
8. illuminated top LCD
9. hard button for bracketing

and to top it off, a more expensive 18-70mm lens. So is all this worth RM1000 more to you? That's for you to decide. For me, YES!

today went for PC fair..
got chance to hold and play with various DSLR

first i saw Oympus and played with its E330 and E500.
Nice, not very heavy, the lens smooth when u zoom it.

2nd,Nikon.i played with its D70s and D50.
yah D70s is definately heavier than E330 and E500 and D50 is slightly lighter than D70s also.the lens.. not as smooth as Olympus.

3rd,Canon.the 350D.
yah the colour production is better than Nikon as i saw in their LCD panel compare with Nikon's(maybe i am too noob so cant really fully utilising Nikon's laugh.gif ).Lighter.the lens.. yah not as smooth as Olympus and about the same with Nikon.

P/S: all the lens are standard kit lens for each of them.

Conclusion:
i like the Olympus's lens that made me zoom smootly and steadily. smile.gif
just wonder izzit the difficulty to find Olympus's accessories(1st or 2nd) makes many players change their mind to Nikon or Canon..

dunno much bout olympus E330 n E500 but i read in photo magazines the photos taken by E300 tends to undersaturate in almost all conditions sweat.gif n olympus is using a unique four thirds (4:3) sensor so very hard oso to find a 4:3 lenses except for olympus lens themselves. but oso heard the zuiko olympus lens is growing kinda fast oso smile.gif

The E500 is actually not bad. If you don't need ISO800 or above.
Currently in the four third bandwagon is Panasonic, Sigma & Olympus. Sigma does produce lense with 'four third' mount. And later after Panasonic launch its 1st dSLR, we might even see Leica lense with 'four third' mount.
BUT price is another issue lah.

maybe bcos of the smaller design of olympus body n lens tongue.gif the olympus 4:3 lens r small (1 advantage) n the sensor that the camera is using is oso small (advantage + disadvantage) blush.gif

or maybe olympus wanna make camera that is user friendly rclxms.gif

dun say anything bout 350D shakehead.gif although the performance is competitive compared to other low end dSLRs but i can say the handling is one the worst among all SLRs due to the extreme small desgin... doh.gif

So what's the plan?

no plan since no more discount tongue.gif i'll still stick to D70s. played with it today together with the 350D tongue.gif kinda fun rclxms.gif but actually the handling in 350D can be improved if a vertical grip is added smile.gif olympus...what should i say...i still not so convinced with the four thirds system that they r using sad.gif they sacrifice the size of the sensor for the sake of smaller design n lightweight sad.gif in fact i love big cameras like the D2x n 1D mark IIN but no money to buy tongue.gif

n another funny thing about 4:3 photo i wanna share tongue.gif remember bout the FZ30 i used to use? rolleyes.gif it is oso actually at 4:3 size. when i develop 1 of the photos (a chicken), that fella (i think an ameteur) print out the photo (unaltered) of the chicken n lemme c...n when i c it, it has only half of its head biggrin.gif another half gone liao bcos the photo paper they r using is longer n shorter tongue.gif should be a 3:2 size photo paper tongue.gif

Anyway, cfyung85...

though the deal might went sour.. but that doesn't means we can't have a gathering when we get our camera. I believe we guys shud meet up.

Guys, seeing cfyung85's poor negotiation outing, I decided to help out by giving Lilian from Boeing a call. Not sure whether this is a good price but this is what I got when I told her a friend wanted to buy 6 x D70s and 2 x D50.

D70s = RM3400 (normal price RM3550)
D50 = RM2500 (normal price RM2800) <= not that good a price but probably can nego further.

Take note that this is over the phone. If go there and see her in person, probably can negotiate for a better deal when the entire deal is told to her.

I think cfyung's mistake was dealing with one of the junior salesperson in Boeing. If deal with the supervisor / boss straight, you will know right away the best deal u can get.

Getting to grips with a SLR will take some time and practice. Even if you bought it today, will you be able to control the camera satisfactorily in time for your trip? It would be much easier if you already have exposure to some level of manual photography (beyond automatic/ P&S), and if you haven't, well, you won't make it in time. From your statement that you do not have a camera, I'm assuming the worst.

And I was also wondering how you were going to get everyone to pay up in time (given your tight time frame)... doh.gif

RM3400 for D70s is not a bad deal since most shop r offering 3500 like that. tarita being cheapest RM3450. RM2500 for D50 is about near normal price since a lot of shops oso offering bout 2450-2600 blush.gif

oh forgot to tell...i'm 24 hours on manual exposure with my FZ30 last time. thats y i prefer D70s rather than D50 n 350D bcos it has 2 command dials that make manual exposure a breeze tongue.gif

Funny u should mention that his attitude change after u said u want to buy bulk.. most shops would be happy that the buyer is willing to buy more..

Anyways, if u guys are really serious, can get together and go to the shop straight and negotiate lar. It is easier to negotiate in a group. Go straight and speak to Lilian at Boeing. I think she's the supervisor / manager there cos I noticed most of the other salespeople check with her on the prices.

If Boeing refuse to budge on the D50, at least can get the D70s first and then proceed to the other shop to get the D50 at RM2400 or less. With 6 units, RM3400 for the D70s shouldn't be a problem.

End of the day, I think the shops in Sungei Wang are already offering very low prices. Eventhough u guys buy in bulk, I highly doubt they can go down much further, at most probably RM100-200 off regular prices.

One other way would be to get in touch with the distributor and get a dealer price. Too bad I don't have lobang on this. smile.gif

I think maybe Canon offers better incentives/kickback for sales of the cameras eh? They do have the price margin and marketing money to do so.

On the subject of Olympus, I do think that the ZD 14-45 kit lens that comes with the E-300, E-500 and E-330 are indeed superior to the kit lens you get on the D50 and EOS-350D. It's got true USM/SWM-type focusing mechanism, for one.

Re: From the other thread about bargaining ...

The shop people might think you come from the competition to check on their price bottomline, or that you're going to open a competing dealership. Some of them stupid want to protect their price margin and not do volume business in this case. Of course, your nego skills and manners also count alot.

Canon's marketing team's really aggresive.
Imagine the manager Mr Teoh bringing a team, giving talks, sponsoring events like touring M'sia.
Not to mention working overtime even on weekends.

Aggresive because their products have fallen behind in the (number) game that they created themselves. Shot their own foot, you can say. But I have little respect for them, because they seem to blatantly attack the opposition without giving credit where credit is due - that shows they lack credibility in what they say ...

i played with D70s too buthen the lens not as good as in E330 and E500 (USM/SWM focusing mechanism)
i am not sure i was holding the D70s kit len (18-70) maybe they just plug in the D50's kit lens to the D70s body?

You can't mess the two up. The DX 18-70 from the D70 is a mid-range lens with rather good performance, and rather hefty in size. The DX 18-55 is a wimp of a lens in terms of construction quality, and is rather small and lightweight.

Hehe just tell my size and heft lar. The DX 18-70 is large-ish and rather heavy. It's also got two rubber rings around the lens. The DX 18-55 is small and light, with one big rubber band around it for zooming, and a skinny plastic rim up front for focusing.

Err, the DX 18-55 is poorly constructed, and is designed with no intention for manual focusing (skinny, unmarked ring!). The so-called SWM mechanism is also half-baked, with no ability to overwrite AF without flicking a switch - which reminds me of Canon's normal DC-driven EF lenses - not something you'd associate with USM/SWM systems. But it claims to have ED elements. Hahahaha ...

Optically speaking, it's got rather average-to-poor corner sharpness, esp. at wide open. Given the price difference between the D50 and D70 with lens, I'd think the D70 is very much more worth it with the better lens.

hmm... not really remember the size already.

but for a newbie's instinct i just felt that the olympus kit lens gave me more confortable than others LOL. so let's say the kit lens for D70s is almost as good as Olympus's then i think the D70s i was holding that was equipped with another kit lens which is from D50.(but do u think would they equip D50's kit to D70s's body?)

i think that is not the filter. its the coating of the lens.

D50's kit lens is good, but the D70's kit lens is better. in terms of range the 18-70 wins. but when it comes to using built in flash, the 18-70 will have some problems since when you pull it to wide and take pictures with built in flash, you will notice a shadow at the bottom tongue.gif. easily solved by getting an external flash. in terms of picture quality, both lenses perform GOOD. as long as you dont go pixel peeping and try REALLY HARD TO FIND their flaws. smile.gif anyway, get any camera and start shooting. build the photographer in you and not the equipment collecter in you. tongue.gif

D50's kit lens is good, but the D70's kit lens is better. in terms of range the 18-70 wins. but when it comes to using built in flash, the 18-70 will have some problems since when you pull it to wide and take pictures with built in flash, you will notice a shadow at the bottom tongue.gif. easily solved by getting an external flash. in terms of picture quality, both lenses perform GOOD. as long as you dont go pixel peeping and try REALLY HARD TO FIND their flaws. smile.gif anyway, get any camera and start shooting. build the photographer in you and not the equipment collecter in you. tongue.gif
*
i think i'll be sticking with the 18-70mm lens pretty long sweat.gif if got money then only try n get a micro nikkor lens or a super tele nikon/3rd party lens sweat.gif

With the 30D out, used 20D body is around the range of ±RM3500.

Btw, Vladimir's selling 30D body for RM4700.

hehe... 18-70mm is a very good range as a walk around lens. if you really want to get into macros. u can always purchase some close up filters( 2 +4 close up filters should do the job ). but dont buy nikon's since they are really really really expensive. or another good alternative is get the sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG MACRO. the one with the red ring. its a good telephoto lense and also a good macro lense.... its really soft at around 300mm but until around 250mm its really usable... if you step down the aperture to around f8 it should be acceptable for all focal lenghts.... the sigma would cost around RM750 for a new one. comes with a soft pouch + lens hood summore. smile.gif

What's the point of buying a lens if it does not deliver optically when wide open or across its specified zoom range? You might as well get one with a tighter zoom range and extrapolate the image; you'd probably get the same result.

dont think many 20d users will switch to 30d since the changes from 20d is not much. just add some megapixels.... spot metering ( not that i use it, but some people need this feature for fine composing ) .... ISO step from 1 step to 1/3 step ( not many will use it anyway, i like it better with 1 steps ).... but if your upgrading from 300d @ 350d it might be worthwhile. smile.gif.

FYI, no added megapixels.
It uses the same sensor as the 20D.
Most notable upgrades beside already mentioned is the 2.5" LCD which has a wider viewing angle. Better file management & browsing. Picture style presets. Continuous shooting can be adjusted between 5fps to 3fps.
For RM4700, it's a good buy, if you don't already own a 20D or D200.

that should depend on how deep your willing to dig into your pocket tongue.gif. tighter focal lengths usually is better but depends once again on how you are going to use it... i suggested the Sigma since sumone wants to use a macro and a telephoto. since the lens has fairly good aspects in both the macro and telephoto ( and also it has a very good price tag ).

but if it comes down to getting a good macro and telephoto on one lense, you could always result to the Zoom Micro Nikkor 70-180mm f/4.5-5.6 ( which has a price tag of nearly RM4k ). tongue.gif

its good oso to have a lens that can do both tele n makro smile.gif i kinda hate to change lens all the time since the sensor will expose to dust. unless i buy myself the olympus dSLRs with super sonic wave filter but i'm not so convinced with the four thirds smaller sensor that it uses sweat.gif plus the limited accessories oso sweat.gif

finally i got my D70s today in SG rclxm9.gif i bought it in boeing in LG floor with Lilian inside tongue.gif well the way she serve customer is really exceptionally exceptional compared to other salesman in there tongue.gif

anyway bought the body + lens for RM3450

bought a 67mm hoya dunno what multicoat filter CHM or something like that for RM130 since the normal hoya UV filter RM60++ suda no more stock

bought a...i think a fake nikon bag for RM100...damn blardy big sweat.gif can fit a body, a flash n 3-4 mid sized lens (not those big huge telephotos) sweat.gif

bought another triangle small nikon bag for RM40 due to convenient sake since that bag mentioned above is really too big to carry along here n there sweat.gif

bought a normal sandisk CF 1Gb for RM199

she only gave me 30 dollars discount doh.gif hack better than nothing tongue.gif

well bout that camera...what can i say... rolleyes.gif i tested both D70s n 350D in boeing. well photo quality wise hard to differentiate but feel like the photos taken with 350D with the original lens provided (dunno what lens) is a bit oversaturated. the colors looks kinda extra rich blush.gif ergonomics...well the salesman kinda wanna laugh at me through the way i'm struggling my fingers in the 350D grip tongue.gif anyway bought the D70s in the end oso rclxm9.gif

bout D70s...really very very very much different compared to my previous FZ30 sweat.gif i dun even know what will the outcome of the photo will be if i alter this n that doh.gif well since dSLR only allow the photo to be viewed only after the shot is taken so really have to shoot several times just to get the near correct exposure unlike the FZ30 that allows u to view the outcome of the photo taken sweat.gif

photo quality wise...well it is a dSLR of course is unrivaled by any normal digicams blush.gif compared to other SLRs...ask the pros tongue.gif

now still in the process of learning how to shoot correctly at 1 shot sweat.gif

anyway i'm satisfied with the D70s. my trip to redang no more liao since have to compulsorily attend a friend's party. luckily didnt book any rooms yet tongue.gif tomolo will be going to genting. i'll try my new camera there. DAMN SIOK LA NOW!!! rclxm9.gif

Ask around Melaka, it's cheaper there.
Do go to those chain store like QS or Fotokem, visit those small individual shop.

Oh the lens; I thought you were referring to body. You should have just bought it (the body) here! Hopefully it would not break down on you anytime you're around here, otherwise shipping + time delays to get it repaired under warranty will be a major, major inconvinience. For that reason alone it would have been worth it to purchase the body here.

Lenses are cheaper in Malaysia but you might have problems with availability, especially if you're trying to look for the better (read: more expensive and less likely to be stocked due to low demand) lenses. Expect some long lead times especially if they have to import from Japan.

By the way, £500 for the d50? I'm seeing quotes of around £350.

actually its not that i wanted to buy there sad.gif i went to low yat first to buy the CF card. the cheapest i saw is RM135 in thudermatch but the salesman say no more stock liao. i asked him when ada stock he said normal sandisk CF tarak enter liao. the rest of other shops in low yat all oso didnt sell sandisk normal CF card. viewnet got sell but RM209. all other shops oso only sell the highspeed n the extreme III which cost a total nuclear bomb sweat.gif well i dun wanna buy kingston since it is not recommended by nikon. nikon recommends sandisk, toshiba n another brand forgot liao...

for now i'm very happy with my D70s. luckily it has 2 dials. i'm so happy with flicking aperture n shutter speed fast. photo quality wise...magnificent even at ISO1000 rclxms.gif used 1600 several times in the dark concert n still cant c any visible noise rclxms.gif small minute minute ones can c la when zoom at full size sweat.gif about the DOF preview...dunno where the button is so not so care bout that 1 tongue.gif burst 3 fps is not bad...the built in flash kinda sux a bit doh.gif plan to get SB600/800 soon. 18-70mm lens not bad but preferably can zoom further more blush.gif planning to get an "all-rounder" like 18-200mm VR if got $$$ tongue.gif

anyway i'm back from my genting trip smile.gif what should i say bout my D70s...well, 1 gb is really not enough for me doh.gif i use the JPEG fine n the camera shows can take >280 photos. i was so shocked to c it can take so many photos but to my disappointment...NOT ENOUGH...oledi maxed out doh.gif have to delete some in order to take more photos blush.gif

another thing...i attended the concert about the myFM annual anniversary thingy in the arena of all stars tongue.gif took a lot of photos n still wanna take but another disappointment...BATTERY KONG LIAO... doh.gif got so many artist singing oso unable to take cry.gif

From your photos, looks like you can use a little more zoom range at the tele end. Haha. Anyway, If you lower your Jpeg settings to normal instead of fine, you can take almost double I believe with no perceivable loss in quality. But test for yourself first la...

Nonsense. Who said Kingston CF not compatible with Nikon.
I'm using Kingston Elite Pro 1GB with D70.
It can store 293 shots for JPEG large fine.
And it's only RM125 @ PC Fair.

Sandisk CF is way too expensive. But yeah, if you're buying Nikon Digicam which bundles memory card, it's either Sandisk or Toshiba (normal speed). And I find the former is faster than the latter.

A manufacturer can recommend a lot of things for their product.
Do we have to follow it blindly?

Eg. Nikon/Canon or whatever would also recommend you to use their charger, battery & other consumables. Do you follow?

Is it for lowlight condition the less aperture the better? example f/1.8 compare to f/4.
telephoto AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G good enough for low light concert?

of course, the smaller aperture f no (larger aperture size) can let in more light when u shoot in low light condition while you still can use a faster shutter speed to avoid handshake. Compared to f/1.8 and f/4, f/1.8 can allow more light going to the censor.

In low light condition, shutter speed, aperture size and iso has conquered the main factor. If you use AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G shoot for low light concert, you must prepare a tripod since the aperture is not big enough to let u set a faster shutter speed. But slow shutter speed will make the image blur, then iso can help you on this...but i think 70-300 still not enough to shoot long distance concert.... tongue.gif

Telephoto lens is just a start. Later you will ask for more... bigger apperture, with VR/IS, then best optics for the lenses... drool.gif brows.gif

But it's best to start with ordinary equipment to brush up the skill first. Only that you will appreciate the functionality of those expensive stuffs. wink.gif

The dark side is strong. I made a mistake earlier saying that boeing quoted me RM2400 for the d50. Actually, they quoted RM3400 for the d70s. So the price difference is RM1000.

For low light shots, you really need a fast lens like f2.8, unless of course you have front row seats.

Personally tho, I'd keep the DX 18-70 and actually pass on the DX 18-200. I'm not a huge fan of high-power zooms, but having one in the bag is convenient when you just want to travel with one lens.

ahh...D50 or D70s ??? well... if its me, i will start out with a D50 and then.... upgrade to a D200. The difference between D50 - D70s is minimal.

Ah... the 18-200VR...i have contemplated into getting 1 before, but... the old saying is, Optically compromised. So what have I done, I have broken it down to shorter focal lengths and still happy with it. Why not, keep the money and get a comfiguration like for example, Sigma 10-20mm, 24-120VR and a 70-200 f2.8 or 80-200 f2.8???? that would be excellent !!! im only missing out on my... 70-200 F2.8....aarrgghhh i need to print money !!! hehehe

I would have gone for the fast lens like Sigma 24-70 f2.8 or 18-50 f2.8 (My next purchasing list) and 2nd hand Nikon 80-200 f2.8 direct with that cash in hand. No need to worry about futher upgrade. Later got cash only get the sharp Tokina 12-24 and not forgetting the SP90 for superb macro shot. tongue.gif

The Sigma DC 18-50/2.8 isn't good at all wide-open. Most users say they only find it acceptable from F/4 and beyond. Perhaps you might want to wait and see what the Tamron 17-50/2.8 is like. As a bonus, you get more wide-angle too. Who knows, maybe this product might be better than the DX 17-55/2.8?

Edit: And oh, I'd take the Sigma EX 24-60/2.8 any given day over the 24-70/2.8 - better all-round sharpness wide-open, slightly less cost, smaller size, weight and filter requirements. You don't lose much on the wide-end either.

Did saw some review that sigma 18-50mm is quite soft wide open. But due to sometime I take wedding photo in cramp enviroment, the wide 18mm is just right. Starting at 24mm I am still very sceptical if the frame is able to cover the indoor shot. There are also the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5, reviewed quite reasonable at all range but not constant f2.8. What a let down. Heard of the tamron 18-50mm version sometime. BTW when will it be available?

Didn't know the 24-60 f2.8 has more advantage, thank for the tips tho. smile.gif

Wait for the Tamron 17-50/2.8 lar. It's definately a worthy wait, I believe. Especially when the Sigma DC 18-50/2.8 is just so-so.

In a fish-eye wide-angle, you actually get less coverage and resolution compared to a rectilinear wide-angle, especially after you de-fish it. I don't know about Canon's wide-angle line-up, but I know Nikon has ...

DX 10.5 FE
DX 12-24/4

but Pentax totally rocks their boat with

DA 14/2.8
DA 10-17 FE
DA 12-24/4
DA 16-45/4 (more of a standard zoom, but hey gives you 24-mme coverage)

Olympus has a few too, but I heard their prices are out of this world.

Anyway, all this is beside the point. I think our friend is looking for a standard zoom lens which is bright and gives a decent wide-angle coverage. To this end, I'd think the Tamron 17-50/2.8 is worth waiting for, especially given Tamron's reputation for making decent optics at reasonable prices.

but it can shoot quite a good wide angle smile.gif same as 18-70mm in the D70s just that the short tele a bit...sueh sweat.gif

if u wan cheap zoom lens can go for the ultra budget 70-300mm nikkor AFG (RM360) or the DX 55-200mm nikkor (RM...about 850) smile.gif but most experienced forumers will advise u to go for the DX55-200mm lens rolleyes.gif

The DX 18-55 isn't half bad. It's usable under most circumstances that it's designed for. If you have any issues with it, perhaps you should inspect your expectations vs. what you're putting into your photography.
