A chameleon can use its tongue to snag prey from a distance the equivalent of 1 and a half times its body length. Not only that, but their tongues move so fast that they violate the general rules for muscle propulsion. The chameleon's tongue shoots out of its mouth at 13.4 miles per hour, and it accelerates from 0 to 20 feet per second in about 20 milliseconds. That's a rate that's faster than any muscle can possibly move, and scientists needed to use high-speed videos and x-rays to calculate it.
The chameleon tongue work like a bow and arrow. It can exceed the normal limitations of muscle movement by holding its tongue back with an elastic tissue, and then firing the tongue out when it builds up enough tension. Scientists refer to it as a "catapult".
Snail mucus trails are so effective that they can travel across the edge of a razor without injury.

Snails and slugs (snails without shells) are the only mollusks that live on land, and like their cousins that live in the sea, they need to stay moist at all times. That's why the fastest way to kill them is pouring salt on them so that they dry out. They leave a trail of mucus when they walk so that they can move across dry surfaces without losing moisture, and as a side benefit they can slide across sharp edges, like razors, without getting damaged. The slime that they produce also makes it really hard for predators to grip them in their mouths.
Hawaii is moving toward Japan at a rate of about 4 inches per year.
Through satellite images we can see that the Island of Maui, Hawaii had been gradually moving toward Japan at a rate of 3 inches per year since 1976. Plate tectonic theory predicts that the plate that Hawaii is on will continue to move Hawaii in that direction at a rate of 4 inches per year.
The Earth's crust is constantly moving. The Earth's surface is made up of large moving plates. Shifts in the plates have caused massive earthquakes. For instance, the Pacific Plate and the Eurasian Plate collided under the Japanese islands in 1923, causing an earthquake that killed 100,000 people.
Most people (65%) tilt their heads to the right when kissing instead of the left.
Traffic lights were invented BEFORE cars and electricity, and they used to EXPLODE.

The first traffic lights were installed in front of the British House of Parliament in 1868. Engineer John Peake Knight designed the traffic light to regulate horse-drawn carriage traffic.
He modeled it after the semaphore system used in British railways, with an arm that goes up and down to indicate whether to stop or go. At night, when it was too dark to see the arms, the traffic signal would switch to using red and green gas lamps.
In order to work, the first traffic light had to have a policeman standing by it at all times to switch the stop and go signals. Once, one of the gas lamps exploded, injuring the police officer. The whole project was immediately scrapped, and traffic lights weren't used again for another 40 years.
