The smallest human penis ever was roughly 1cm long. (Repost from v1)

The Kinsey Institute found the smallest penis to be either 1.75 inches or 1 inch erect. However, in medical literature, there have been penises recorded to not even exceed 1 cm (roughly .39 inches). This would be a condition known as a "micropenis", an unusually small penis, that can sometimes be treated with hormonal therapy. There is also a condition that would technically make make a penis even smaller than 1 cm. With congenital hypoplasia, the body of the penis is entirely absent. Instead, the head or glans of the penis is attached to the pubic region.

If a test says a MAN is pregnant, he may have CANCER!

user posted image
There's a hormone called human chorionic gonadotrophin or hCG, which is produced by the developing embryo when women get pregnant. hCG helps control and regulate other development hormones. Because it appears so early into the pregnancy, it's used as an early indicator of pregnancy by over-the-counter pregnancy tests (the ones you pee on). However, some types of cancer, including testicular cancer, also produce hCG. This means that if men pee on that same pregnancy stick, and test positive, it might be an indicator that they have developed testicular cancer! This puts the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "Junior" in a completely different perspective!

In the US, you can be TOO smart to be a policeman!

In 1999, a Federal judge dismissed lawsuit between Robert Jordan (a bachelor in Literature) and the New London police force. Jordan said he was rejected from the police force because he had tested too HIGH in the police department's aptitude tests. Jordan saw this as a kind of discrimination and sued on the basis that being rejected for being too smart is the same as being rejected for being of a different race or religion.
Jordan says that when he asked the person in charge of hiring why this was the case, he responded that the job of a policeman in New London can be very mundane, routine and boring. Having people with High IQs would increase the number of people quitting, because they would be too bored with the job, he told Jordan. After reviewing the case, the judge ruled that Robert Jordan hadn't been discriminated against, because he was treated the same way as everyone. ANYONE who scored too high on the tests was rejected, therefore he did not qualify for equal protection under Federal law.

Have fleas to kill? Use lemon extract!

The first thing to do is buy or make lemon extract. To make it, just thinly slice a lemon, put it in a small jar, and cover it with boiling water. Allow that to sit overnight and in the morning you can pour it into a spray bottle for use.
To treat your dog with it, all you need to do is apply the extract to your dog’s fur and rub it into the skin. You can use a spray bottle, but many dogs dislike those, so it’s best not to traumatize your furry friend. Don’t use it on cats, however, because they can be allergic to citrus.
As for the home, be sure to cover carpets, bedding, and furniture with it. Sure, you could just head out and go buy some flew remover, but why waste the money when you only need a few lemons and water?

Any North Koreans who escape to South Korea are awarded free citizenship.

user posted image
In short, the South Korean government considers both North and South Koreans to be recognized as South Korean nationals. Basically, if someone from North Korea manages to get into South Korea, an evaluation can take place to award citizenship.
While North Koreans don’t necessarily have automatic protection, as criminals are not allowed to be naturalized, the bulk of North Koreans that can prove their North Korean citizenship can still be accepted. People can also become South Korean nationals by being born to a Korean parent (if the Korean parent is the mother, the person must have been born after June 13, 1998). Being abandoned as a child within South Korea is also grounds for citizenship. People can also simply apply for naturalization.

The original design for Mount Rushmore depicted the four presidents from the waist up!

user posted image
It's pretty difficult to deem Gutzon Borglum's initial vision for his colossal sculpture very feasible, considering it took over 14 years and nearly a million dollars just to carve out the presidents' faces! Regardless, a lack of funding forced the project to be scaled back to include only the heads of the former heads of state. This is probably a good thing though, because this preliminary design would have called for a sculpture well over 200 feet high. Oh, and if you're worried about the potential deterioration of this beloved national landmark, fear not - its estimated erosion rate is one inch every 1,000 years, so this mountain isn't due to be 'defaced' anytime soon!

Elephants are evolving without tusks because of poaching!

user posted image
Before man had produced technologies such as high-caliber shotguns, it was evolutionarily favorable for male elephants to have large tusks. Bigger tusks used to provide elephant bulls a more powerful weapon with which to establish their masculine dominance. Tragically, this is no longer the case; in fact, it has become quite the opposite! Elephants with small to non-existent tusks are now often considered to be the "fittest" for survival because tusked males are more likely to be shot for their ivory. This outside pressure has increased the prevalence of tuskless genes in the overall elephant population, which means that baby elephants are more likely to be born with tusks that are small or absent. According to Dr. Zhang Li of Beijing Normal University, this effect is evidenced by an increase in the tusk-free gene from 2 to 5 percent of all Asian elephants to between 5 and 10 percent of Chinese elephants.

150 calories certainly isn’t very much, and banging one’s head against the wall for an hour would probably result in at least a concussion, but considering everything we do costs energy, it kind of makes sense.

Here's some other weird ways of burning calories:
Chewing gum
Raking leaves
Eating spicy food
Breathing through your nose
Taking a cold shower
Doing a cannonball
Giving your dog a bath
Licking a stamp

The Uno (card game) World Championship is regarded as one of the fiercest card game competitions.

The popular Uno card game was invented near Cincinnati in 1971. It is played with a specially printed deck and is in the Crazy Eights family of card games. A game is won by accumulating 500 points through several hands. When a player is down to only one card, s/he yells “Uno!” to warn other players. Some Uno decks have special cards or themes. In all there are more than 135 different themed Uno decks.
The Uno World Championship is held annually in Moscow, Russia. Over 71 countries compete in the championship and it is regarded as one of the fiercest card game competitions. Players are known for displays of extreme endurance and concentration needed for long games. In 2011 the finals took over 5 hours to finish.

Brazil couldn't afford to send their athletes to the 1932 Olympics. They found an ingenious way to send them

The 1932 Olympics, held in Los Angeles were historic for Brazil for a few reasons. First, is that the country had recently been hit by the Great Depression. The second, is that the Brazilian delegation included swimmer Maria Lenk, who was the FIRST South American woman to compete in the Olympics.
Because of the economic crisis, Brazil didn't have the money to send their athletes through traditional means. They came up with an ingenious solution: they sent them all on a boat filled with coffee and told them to sell it along the way to fund the trip! The ship, the Itaquice took them all the way to the Port of Los Angeles, where they were supposed to disembark.
Not all the athletes got their dream of participating in the Olympics, though. The port charged $1 per person to disembark, so the delegation only let the athletes that they thought would have a better chance at getting a medal off the boat, and also Maria Lenk. The ship then went to San Francisco to sell more coffee.
In the end, out of the 82 athletes that went, only 67 competed in the Olympics, and Brazil won NO medals at all. Maybe it was karma for not letting everyone out? How would you have felt if you were one of the 15 people left on board?

The last two speakers of the language Ayapaneco won’t speak to each other.

user posted image
Manuel Segovia and Isidro Velazquez from the town of Ayapa in Mexico are the last known speakers of the indigenous language Ayapaneco. Lately, they’ve been frustrating anthropologists because they refuse to talk to each other. Because of their mutual dislike, efforts by an Indiana University anthropologist to produce an Ayapaneco dictionary have come to a halt. Many of Mexico’s 68 native languages are in danger of becoming extinct thanks to the spread of Spanish education in the 20th century. Ayapaneco is one of the most endangered.

Men produce better sperm when watching porn depicting multiple men.

This actually holds true for males of many species. When surrounded by other competing males, an individual male’s sperm quality will increase to compensate for the competition. This increases his likelihood of procreating. In a study, heterosexual men provided semen samples while looking at explicit pictures of either two men with a woman or three women. Though the sperm counts didn’t differ between the two testing groups, the men looking at the images of two men produced higher quality sperm.

A man claimed to have been President of the United States for a day.

user posted image
Democrat David Rice Atchinson served as a U.S. Senator from 1843 to 1855. It was normal at the time for the Senate to elect a 'president pro tempore' to serve in the absence of the vice president, and Atchinson was elected to this position on 13 separate occasions. The president pro tempore also followed the vice president in the presidential line of succession at that time.
Until the 1930s, a president's term officially began at noon on March 4th. In 1849, however, March 4th fell on a Sunday, so Zachary Taylor chose to delay his inauguration an extra day. Atchinson claimed that the title of president fell to HIM during this 24-hour period, since the outgoing president's term had expired and President Taylor had yet to have been sworn in!
Nevertheless, Atchinson's claim does not hold much water. Even if you disregard the fact that no one recognized him as president during that period, there is one detail that sinks his whole argument. March 4th is also the day on which the Congressional term expires! Therefore, he would have no more right to the presidency than outgoing president James Polk!

Selective mutism is more common than autism.

Studies in California and Israel have shown that seven out of every 1000 children has selective mutism. Selective mutism (SM) is a condition in which children are unable to speak in certain situations (like school), even though they know how to speak. It’s commonly associated with anxiety, and is often misdiagnosed as autism, mental retardation, or oppositional-defiant disorder. SM has a prevalence rate of 7.1 per 1000, making it more common than autism (0.5 per 1000), major depressive disorder (0.4-3.0 per 1000), Tourette’s (0.5 per 1000), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (0.5-1.0 per 1000).

It used to be commonplace for people to wear pubic wigs.

user posted image
There’s a name for a wig that you put on your pubic region. It’s called a “merkin”. It’s unusual now, but this was an especially common practice among prostitutes and other people who engaged in a lot of sexual activity. It’s a good way to cover up sores from STD’s. Also, since syphilis was often treated by shaving the pubic region or treating it with mercury (which causes hair loss), the merkin served as a replacement for all that missing pubic hair. Merkins also saw some use for the same reasons that people wear wigs, i.e. baldness or wanting have a different hair color.

Horseback Riding carries higher injury rate than motorcycle riding!

Maybe it would be safer if Prince Charming rolled in on a Motocross instead. An estimated 30 million Americans ride horses annually, and more than 23 000 riders under the age of 25 have been hospitalized per year as a result.
Most injuries result from falls, and can have severe and often fatal consequences. This rate of injury is higher than that of motorcycling. On average, motorcyclists suffer once every 7000 hours of riding, whereas horseback riders have an accident about once every 350 hours.
This is probably due to the fact that a horse can weigh up to 15 000 pounds and stand as tall as 3 meters high. Both types of riders should wear helmets and knee-pads when participating in their activity.

“Fall Out Boy” was named after a Simpsons character!

Both are extremely famous, both are entertaining and addictive, but who would have thought that they have anything to do with one another. After all, Fall out Boy is an American pop punk band from Wilmette, Illnois. The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom from Fox Broadcasting Company.
Well turns out that the band was nameless for their first two shows. Whether it was out of appreciation for their audience or just desperation, the then- nameless band let the audience at the end of their second performance yell out their ideas for a name.
One member suggested “Fall-out Boy” as a reference to the sidekick of Radioactive man from The Simpsons. The rest was history. But the connections don’t just end there; the band went on to perform the closing theme song for the 2009 Simpsons episode “Lisa the Drama Queen.”

Asparagus used to be given to pilots to boost their night vision and attract fish to be caught!

user posted image
Asparagus actually contains chemicals that pass through the body and attract fish through our urine. The asparagus has been used for centuries as food. The ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians all used the plant.
They dried the stems to use in the winter and cooked them and ate them raw in the summer. Asparagus has few calories, is full of antioxidants, and contains vitamins A, B6, C, E, and K. Its high levels of potassium actually helps slow down calcium loss in the body and is thought to aid in heart disease.
U.S. pilots were given asparagus in their ration kits in the Pacific Ocean region. They were working for the US spy organization called the Office of Strategic Services. It is really quite clever. Asparagus contains mercaptan, which is a highly attractive chemical.
The idea was that should the pilots be shot down, they could eat the asparagus and the mercaptan chemical would pass through their urine. The pilot could pee in the water and the mercaptan in their urine would attract fish to the area and they could catch them easier and have food to eat.

There was a 700 year old statue of Buddha made of 5 tons of solid gold that no one knew about.

user posted image
Wat Traimit Witthayaram, or the Temple of the Golden Buddha, is a buddhist temple in Bangkok. The Golden Buddha is 4 meters high and 3 meters wide (from the farthest apart points, the knees). The entire thing is cast in 5 tons of solid gold. It might seem unusual that such an impressive statue could go unnoticed. When Bangkok was established as the new capital of Thailand, the recovery of many Buddha statues was encouraged. Many of them were transported to Bangkok.
In the early 19th century, a huge Buddha statue made of brown clay was installed in a temple. In the early 20th century, the temple was abandoned and deserted until 1957 when the East Asiatic Company took over the premises.
Of the two Buddha statues in the temple, one was transferred to the Wat Traimit Witthayaram. When that statue was being hoisted up, it slipped and fell to the ground. It turns out the statue was only covered in clay and lacquer, and was actually 5 tons of gold. The fall had shattered all the clay to pieces, revealing the gold. So in the end, it was one of the more fortunate outcomes of something accidentally falling and breaking to pieces.

A fake neighborhood was built in Seattle during WWII!

user posted image
The whole fake neighborhood was built atop a Boeing factory south of downtown Seattle, and was the cumulative size of eight football fields. Houses, streets, and plants were assembled out of ply wood, cardboard, etc. to act as props and give the town the most convincing appearance possible.
The thought was that if any Japanese bombers made it this far east, they would confuse the plant for a quiet residential neighborhood, and as a result, not bomb it. The workers at the plant had to use secret underground tunnels to reach nearby and also disguised cafeterias, classrooms, etc. Just another example of how war changes the landscape of a country.

Cotton candy, notoriously bad for the teeth, was co-invented by a dentist.

user posted image
William James Morrison was a dentist, lawyer, and author from Nashville, Tennessee in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Because he became President of the Tennessee State Dental Association in 1894 and wrote several children’s books, it might seem a little odd that he would go on to invent cotton candy.
Dr. Morrison patented several inventions in the food department. He developed a process for extracting the oil from cottonseeds and converting it to lard substitute, and even figured out a chemical process to purify the public drinking water in Nashville.
In 1897, he and a Nashville candy maker named John C. Wharton conceived and co-patented an “electric candy machine” which produced what was then called Fairy Floss and today is called Cotton Candy. The product was brought to the public in 1904 and became a huge instant success.

In 1962, mass laughter shut down 14 schools and affected 1000 people in Tanzania!

The Tanganyika laughter epidemic of 1962 was an outbreak of mass hysteria or mass psychogenic illness rumored to have occurred in or near the village of Kashasha on the western coast of Lake Victoria in the modern nation of Tanzania near the border of Kenya. The laughter epidemic began on January 30, 1962, at a mission-run boarding school for girls in Kashasha. The laughter started with three girls and spread haphazardly throughout the school, affecting 95 of the 159 pupils, aged 12–18.
Symptoms lasted from a few hours to 16 days in those affected. The teaching staff were not affected but reported that students were unable to concentrate on their lessons. The school was forced to close down on March 18, 1962. After the school was closed and the students were sent home, the epidemic spread to Nshamba, a village that was home to several of the girls. In April and May, 217 people had laughing attacks in the village, most of them being school children and young adults.
The Kashasha school was reopened on May 21 only to be closed again at the end of June. In June, the laughing epidemic spread to Ramashenye girls’ middle school, near Bukoba, affecting 48 girls. The school from which the epidemic sprang was sued and the children and parents transmitted it to the surrounding area. Other schools, Kashasha itself, and another village, comprising thousands of people, were all affected to some degree. Six to eighteen months after it started, the phenomenon died off. The following symptoms were reported on an equally massive scale as the reports of the laughter itself: pain, fainting, flatulence, respiratory problems, rashes, attacks of crying, and random screaming. In total 14 schools were shut down and 1000 people were affected.

Luminaries like Mark Twain, Andrew Carnegie, and Benjamin Franklin advocated for simplified spelling!

Homophones are words that sound the same but mean different things, such as creak and creek or threw and through. They are also words that are spelled the same but mean different things as in fair, which can be used like “I went to the fair and rode the ferris wheel,” or “He received a fair trial.” Homophones alone can be tricky and confusing. Then, there is the problem of simplified spelling. There is a proper way to spell words, but some words have a simplified and alternate version of spelling. Take the word “through.” It can be spelled “thru,” though this is an informal spelling.
The dictionary does acknowledge this simplified spelling as an alternative. The simplified spelling will be understood, but it will also portray that you aren’t a very serious person or even well educated if you use it. Luminaries like Mark Twain, Andrew Carnegie, and Benjamin Franklin supported the simplified spelling of words. For example, changing through to thru, night to nite, and though to tho. Theodore Roosevelt even tried to mandate that government documents use the simple spelling during his time in office as President.

In the first 10 year of the Tour de France, many of the cyclists cheated by taking buses and trains instead of cycling!

user posted image
On the July 1, 1903, 60 cyclists set off from Paris. After more than 2400 kilometers of cycling, at an average speed of 25.7 kmh, they returned to Paris on the July 19th, in a competition won by Maurice Garin of France. The Tour de France had been born. The race was threatened in 1904-1914 by an extraordinary amount of cheating, with spectators eagerly trying to ensure that certain contestants failed to finish, and several contestants taking buses and trains instead of cycling, but the race struggled on through these difficult years and mountains were introduced to the circuit in 1905.
Apart from the war years of 1915-1918 and 1940-1946 the Tour de France has taken place every year since. By 2000, the number of participants had increased to 200, the distance covered to 3,660 kilometers, and the average speed to 39.6 kmh. There are now 20 stages instead of the six longer stages that made up the very first race. But that is in no way to detract from those early racers, when both roads and equipment were much inferior to those found today. The Tour de France is now watched all around the world, with an audience that includes many non-cyclists, and is perhaps the greatest mainstream endurance event there is.

Scientifically speaking, women stay angry longer than men do after an argument!

user posted image
Strong emotions start with physiological changes in your body. The heart rate increases, adrenaline surges, and muscles tighten; all before you realize you’re angry. Men and women generally get angry at the same rate of speed, according to neurobiologists. In women, however, it takes a bit longer for nervous system to settle down and return to normal than it does for men. This means that after an argument, a man can cool down pretty quickly, while the woman needs a little extra time.
Her body remains in an agitated state even after resolution to the argument. While still in the agitated state, her brain in still angry and casts blame on other things. The argument then flares up again about a new subject. So, the best thing for a man to do is to change the subject to something more light hearted once things wind down in the argument to help her chill out. As for women, they have to realize what is going on inside of them and give themselves a chance to shake it off.
