Jim Carrey tuned down $10M he was offered to star in The Mask II!

user posted image
The reason Jim Carrey refused the $10M was because the role would not be a challenge for him. At the time the $10M was offered to him, it would have been record-setting. For many people, just the opportunity to break a record (and get all that money) would have been convincing, but it wasn’t enough for Jim Carrey. After playing Ace Ventura for a second time in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Carrey realized that repeating a role didn’t offer him any challenges, so he refused.
Instead of Mask II, Son of the Mask was created. It was fairly unrelated, and did not have Carrey in it. Unsurprising, it won some of the “awards” for being the worst sequel with a poor cast and director. The first movie, the one Carrey starred in, did very well at the box office.
The Mask earned $350 million worldwide, and $119 million in the United States alone. It was nominated for Best Special Effects, and Carrey himself was nominated for a Golden Globe. Although it sometimes received mixed reviews, it was pretty well received by the public.

The US Department of Defense worked on Transformers 2 for over a year.

user posted image
We’ve previously talked about how the US Military often consults on major films depicting it, and neglected to consult on The Avengers. While a sect of the US Military devoted to superheroes was deemed too unrealistic for the military, a movie about giant transforming alien robots fighting alongside the military was deemed okay.
Jokes aside, the whole purpose is just to strive for more realism. For the first Transformers film, DreamWorks and Paramount Studios partnered with the United States Air Force. With Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009, the production company decided to branch out to highlight America’s military members and power on the big screen.
Often, real military members (current and former) are even cast in movies like this to encourage realism. It might seem a little odd that films like Transformers would be concerned with realism. The explanation makes perfect sense though.
In movies without supernatural elements, the audience automatically assumes everything operates in the same functional, normal world. When an element like aliens or superpowers is introduced, the production team often works harder to maintain the viewers’ suspension of disbelief.
It’s really just to make it so that the audience can buy into the premise. So it makes sense that in movies like Transformers, the production team would bring in military consultants to ensure the film is as true to reality as it could be.

Aerosmith has made more money from Guitar Hero than from album sales.

user posted image
Following the release of Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band 2, the popularity of the franchises began to wane. In the wake of this, titles like Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and The Beatles Rock Band were being released to a high degree of success.
Though Aerosmith’s own Guitar Hero, released in 2008, was very successful and popular, many people were displeased with some omissions on the song selection. Additionally, many felt that a lack of improvements in the gameplay made the game feel not worth it.
Despite this, the game sold like hotcakes. In its first week, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith sold more than 550,000 copies, grossing more than 25 million in sales. In the following three months, it sold over a million copies and made $50 million dollars. Aerosmith also benefitted in album sales with a 40% sales increase.
Though the exact numbers aren’t known, Aerosmith earned more from the game than album sales. Of course, not all of this was from the game’s royalties. Merchandising and concert sales were both boosted from the game. Today, the game has sold 3.6 million units.

Myth Busted: Men DO NOT think about sex every seven seconds

user posted image
Society tells us that men should always be on the prowl for casual hookups, thinking about sex every seven seconds, but according to a recent study men don’t think about sex any more than food or sleep.
According to a recent study published in The Journal of Sex Research, men think about sex on average 18.6 times a day. Overall men are found to report a greater number of personal-need-based thoughts than women, including areas such as food 18 times a day, and sleep 11 times a day.

Lucy Liu claims to have had sex with a ghost.

user posted image
In a US Weekly interview, Lucy Liu was not shy about her sex encounter with a ghost, or a heavenly figure. She said that it was sheer bliss, she felt everything and then he floated away. Apparently her description is not unlike what many other people report.
This could be a subset of what's called an incubus encounter, an often scary meeting with a creature that sits on your chest and looks scary. Really it's just something called sleep paralysis in which the paralysis effects of REM sleep intrude into a waking state, resulting in you not being able to move but are still awake.Lucy Liu might have just experienced a similar incubus encounter, but instead of her being scared and paralyzed, she felt like she had sex with a ghost!

It is illegal for physicians to determine the sex of a fetus in India.

India has a long history of preferring sons to daughters. The distribution of women versus men in society is heavily weighted towards males, even with the efforts of lawmakers to even out this distribution. It is really interesting that among higher classes this preference towards males tends to be more pronounced than in lower classes.
Because of this unequal distribution, lawmakers have made it illegal for India physicians to figure out the sex of fetuses in their mother’s womb. The hope is that without parents knowing the sex of their child, they’ll be less likely to abort a girl and carry it full term, helping to even out the population.
However, many physicians continue to offer services to tell the gender of an unborn child, despite the risks. For many doctors, the payout for offering to find the gender of a fetus is greater than the risk of being caught and punished by the government.
The actual extent of this law breaking is more or less unknown, but it’s thought to be very common. The business of finding genders and aborting females is thought to be worth more than $100 million in India.

After sex, some men experience sadness and regret, which is known as Post-coital tristesse!

user posted image
PCT is a feeling of melancholy after having sexual intercourse. PCT is more common in men than it is in women. Many sufferers of PCT also feel strong anxiety for five minutes to two hours after sex. The term itself comes from the Latin post-coital and the French tristesse literally meaning sadness after sex. It is also known as depression after sex.
The reason for the sadness is thought to be due to the loss of semen and the exhaustion the body faces after intercourse. Instead of feeling a relief, the body feels weakness and exhaustion. The Latin proverb “omne animal post coital triste” goes along with PCT and means “all animals are sad after sex.”
Aristotle and many other writers and poets have written of post-coital tristesse in their work. The hormone prolactin, used in making breastmilk, is also found in men and shoots sky high right after an orgasm. It skyrockets 400% more during sex than during masturbation, leading scientists to believe that intercourse is much more satisfying than masturbation.
The prolactin plateaus and you feel a lull in your emotions. It can also be an issue faced if one has sex with someone they don’t really care about, because of the intimate connection sex brings.

In the 1860s policemen were legally allowed to examine almost any woman’s private parts.

user posted image
By the 1860’s, the British government suddenly realized that many of the men in their military suffered from venereal disease like syphilis. This naturally compelled to regulate prostitution through a bill called the Contagious Diseases Prevention Act. This sounds reasonably reasonable, right?
Well... The law was directed only at women. Essentially, any woman suspected of being a prostitute was required to comply to a physical examination by a police officer. No warrant was required. There were no age limitations. All the police required was a little tip from any random person, and they could seize, and force women to have their “private parts” examined. Naturally, it was mostly working or poor women who were subjected to this brutal assault of basic liberties.

Belize's flag is the only national banner that depicts human beings.

The flags of Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands also depict human beings, but they are British territories, not independent nations.
Belize is also the only Central American country that has English as its official language.

In Ancient Rome, whitening one's teeth was often accomplished using urine.

user posted image
Ammonia, which is found in urine, is also a cleaning agent that can kill bacteria. The ancient Egyptians would whiten their teeth with a mixture of pulverized pumice and wine vinegar.
Strangely enough, centuries later, teeth whitening methods got worse! In the 1800s they used to whiten teeth by filing them down and then washing them in nitric acid. This also destroyed the protective enamel of the teeth (not a good idea!).Facts Facts Facts v1 ~ Facts Facts Facts ~ one day these facts might win you money.

A hanging, if done improperly, can result in a slow death by strangulation or decapitation.

user posted image
An ideal hanging is called a long drop. The subject is dropped from a long distance, which, based on their weight, will produce 1,000 and 1,250 foot-pounds of torque. This much torque will snap the subject's neck, severing the spine, causing immediate unconsciousness. The unconscious "hangee" dies without feeling pain.
If the drop is too short, or the noose knot is in the wrong place, the subject will die slowly from strangulation. the If the drop goes too far, the subject could lose his head (like Saddam Hussein's half-brother Barzan al Tikriti). During the Nuremberg hangings, a number of the German officers strangled to death as a result of botched executions. Wilhelm Keitel struggled at the end of his rope for 24 minutes before he died.

Sony's first product was a defective rice cooker.

Sony founder Masaru Ibuka started looking into making electronics products because in post-war Japan electricity was cheap. As the war plants were closing down, there was more electricity being produced than was needed. Ibuka's first product was an electric rice-cooker that had a tendency to either overcook or undercook rice.

The model for the Mona Lisa may have been a man.

user posted image
An art historian believes that Leonardo da Vinci based his most famous painting on one of his favorite young models, a young man named Gian Giacomo Caprotti. Caprotti, also known as Salai, is thought to have served as the inspiration for several of Da Vinci's pieces, including a painting of John the Baptist and a drawing called Angel Incarnate. The similarities between the noses and mouths in these works make the art historian's argument quite compelling and difficult to deny.
The letter 'S' that was recently found in Mona's eye is also thought by many to stand for Salai. Until now, most experts believed that the model for the painting was a 24-year-old woman named Lisa Gherardini and that the work began in 1503. This new evidence draws both the starting date and painting subject further into question, and only adds to the mystery surrounding one of the most enigmatic works of art of all time!

Many Japanese couples hold divorce ceremonies that are similar to weddings.

The couples dress up in front of their friends and families, vow never to see each other again, and then smash a ring with a hammer. The idea is to emulate the formality of a traditional wedding in the hopes of increasing the acceptability of the once taboo practice. With the divorce rate in Japan continuing to climb there are now companies that specialize in providing divorce ceremonies like these.

Adam Sandler is always criticized for his movies

But when he stared in gems like Reign over Me, Funny People & Punch Drunk Love (directed by Paul Thomas Anderson) nobody come to watch

Johnny Depp is afraid of clowns.

user posted image
The reason for his coulrophobia? Because, as he stated in an interview with Australia’s Courier Mail newspaper, “it’s impossible, thanks to their painted-on smiles, to distinguish if they are happy or if they are about to bite your face off!” Depp went on to say, “there always seemed to be a darkness lurking just under the surface, a potential for real evil.” It makes you wonder what kind of potential he thinks characters such as Edward Scissorhands or his version of Willy Wonka have...

After being separated for 30 years, a brother and sister were reunited on a blind date.

user posted image
Can you say AWKWARD? Sarah Kemp and George Bentley met on a dating site called “ForgetDinner.co.uk.” The pair instantly hit it off together and corresponded through email for several months. Since Sarah lives in Scotland and George is from London, the pair did not choose to get together and get serious until they were sure a relationship could work. At long last, the would-be couple went out on a date at the White Horse, George’s favorite pub. After about an hour of small talk, the duo came to a shocking realization - they weren’t soulmates...they were actually long-lost siblings!
The fact that over 30 years had passed and they no longer shared a last name makes this an honest but hilarious mistake. However, it is rather strange that no clues surfaced after months of romantic courtship and correspondence! George and Sarah Bentley had grown up together, but in 1975, when George was 11 years old and Sarah only 6, their parents got a divorce. Sarah and her mother Felicity moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, while David and George Bentley stayed in London. In 1989, Sarah got married and decided to keep her her ex-husband’s last name when they divorced a year later, which made George’s future search for his sister impossible!

The Statue of Liberty’s face is said to be modeled after its sculptor’s mother.

user posted image
Lady Liberty was created by a young Frenchman by the name of Frédérick Bartholdi. After his design was approved and he had been awarded a U.S. design patent, Bartholdi actually came overseas to America and personally selected New York Harbor as the site for his statue!
The Statue's torch was the first part constructed in France in 1876. On July 4th, 1884, the completed Statue was given as a gift to the United States; however, its reassembly was not completed until October 1886. In 1984, the original torch, now located in the lobby of the monument, was replaced by a new copper torch covered in 24K gold leaf which is lighted by floodlight at night. Unfortunately, the torch area above the statue’s raised arm has been closed since 1916 due to weakening of the copper in this area.

A man pre-ordered Duke Nukem Forever a decade ago!

user posted image
Bill, a.k.a. “Slash000”, put down $10 back on August 13, 2001 in anticipation of the game’s release later that year. Little did he know that he would not play it for ten years! Due to various development issues, Duke Nukem Forever looked like it’s release would take, well...FOREVER! The game became an industry joke and synonymous with vaporware (games that are announced, but never officially released or canceled).
Fortunately, Bill was clever enough to store his preorder receipt in a black DVD case in a cool ventilated room, thereby preserving it for all those years. “It started to disintegrate when I left it out in the open,” Bill said, “and I'm going to frame it with the purchase receipt now that the game has finally arrived.” He redeemed the ancient receipt at his local GameStop on June 14th, and the $10 deduction was eventually approved...despite the fact that the original promotion was no longer in the system!

Apple made their own video game system in the 90s.

user posted imageuser posted image
The Pippin, which Apple produced with the help of toy company Bandai, was a $600 CD-based game console that came out in 1995. This would have put it in direct competition with the Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation, and the Nintendo 64, except for one thing -- it failed miserably. When it came out, the only game publisher to produce software for it was Bandai itself. When you combine that with a $600 price tag, and it’s no surprise they were only able to sell 42,000 units. On the plus side, at least you could use it to play Marathon, the predecessor to Halo.

There’s a species of lizards that are 100 percent females and they’re nicknamed the Lesbian Lizards!

user posted image
The New Mexico whiptail is a species of lizard found in the southern United States in New Mexico and Arizona, and in northern Mexico in Chihuahua. It is the official state reptile of New Mexico. It is one of many lizard species known to be parthenogenic. Individuals of the species can be created either through the hybridization of the little striped whiptail and the tiger whiptail or through the parthenogenic reproduction of an adult New Mexico whiptail.
The hybridization of these species prevents healthy males from forming whereas males do exist in both parent species and parthenogenesis allows the resulting all-female population to reproduce and thus evolve into a unique species capable of reproduction. This combination of interspecific hybridization and parthenogenesis exists as a reproductive strategy in several species of whiptail lizard within the Cnemidophorus genus to which the New Mexico whiptail belongs. They’re known as lesbian lizards.

There’s a real-life Tatooine.

For the first time ever, astronomers have found a planet with two suns! The Kepler-16 system is a pair of binary stars with a large planet orbiting them both. The astronomers found the planet is 200 light-years away from Earth, using NASA’s Kepler space telescope.
This lends some credibility to the imaginings of George Lucas. Luke Skywalker’s home planet, the desert planet Tatooine, has two suns, something that was unheard of in the real world until now. However, while Tatooine was crawling with all sorts of alien life, there’s no indication that Kepler-16 is capable of sustaining any life on it at all.

Apple seeds are slightly poisonous.

user posted image
So much for “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Apple seeds contain cyanide- a highly toxic chemical compound that has applications in mining, fishing, and pest control. Also, its proteins have been known to cause two forms of allergies. Even with these properties, the apple is no forbidden fruit.
About 69 million tonnes of apples were grown worldwide in 2010, and of course 50% of them were “made in China.” The United States is the second-leading producer of apples with more than 6% of the worldwide production. Now, apples aren’t a complete death trap. Research suggests that they reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. Additionally, apple seeds are not usually dangerous to humans, as they only contain a splash of poison.

Ketchup, both the word and the sauce, originated in China!

user posted image
Ketchup is a condiment thought to be a staple of America. Few would taste it and think it has anything to do with Asia, yet most people don’t know its interesting history. The word for ketchup originates from the Chinese word “kôe-chiap,” which means, “brine of pickled fish or shellfish.” Ketchup was originally composed of fish brine and various herbs and spices and tasted much more like Worcestershire sauce than modern day ketchup.
The recipe for the sauce began to spread around Asia and eventually made it to Indonesia and Malaysia, where the British discovered it in the 17th century. The English sailors liked it so much they took it back to England, where they added tomatoes that had been brought over in the previous century from the New World, creating the first version of recognizable modern day ketchup!

A blind man regained his vision by having a tooth implanted in his eye.

user posted imageuser posted image
Martin Jones of Rotherham, England had NEVER seen his own wife! This was because, eight years prior to his marriage, a tub of white hot aluminum had exploded in Jones's face while he was working in a scrapyard. As a result, Martin suffered 37 percent burns and lost both his left eye and the vision in his right one.
Over 12 years later, a revolutionary procedure allowed Martin a chance to get his sight back. The technique required part of a tooth to be used as an artificial lens (living tissue is needed because plastic would likely be rejected by the body). Skin from Martin's cheek was grafted onto the blind eye and after two months of growth, the partial tooth is placed upon this base. A hole was then drilled into the tooth to allow light to shine through.
After eight hours of surgery, the procedure was a success! Said Martin of his wife, "The doctors took the bandages off and it was like looking through water and then I saw this figure and it was her. She's wonderful and lovely. It was unbelievable to see her for the first time."

The crowd at the first guillotine execution was angry because it was too quick and demanded the return of the gallows!

user posted image
The guillotine was an instrument of execution developed during the French Revolution. It was first presented as a new, more efficient and humane replacement to the gallows, which were extremely unpredictable. Hanging a person always ensured their death, but if the rope was too long, the person’s head could be pulled from their body, and a rope too short would cause them to wriggle for up to 30 minutes during a slow suffocation process.
Joseph-Ignace Guillotin was a French physician who developed and promoted the guillotine, hoping for a more civilized form of execution. Unfortunately, it was so easy that thousands were executed by it. The first person executed by the machine was Nicolas Jacques Pelletier on April 25, 1792.
He was a common criminal and highwayman, and after attacking a civilian and killing him was arrested and ordered to death. The National Assembly had recently ordered decapitation the only “enlightened” form of execution permissible in France, and Pelletier was forced to wait for three months while the first guillotine was being constructed!
When his day came, he was decapitated in front of a rather large crowd who were eager to see the new machine in use. However, almost all of them were disappointed and began to boo. They had come to see a show, not a simple decapitation.
They demanded the return of hanging as a form of capital punishment, yet even with their appeals, the guillotine caught on and made quite the mark in history.

Samuel Whittemore: English-American farmer, soldier, and man of steel. At the age of 80, he became the oldest known colonial combatant in the American Revolutionary War. During a Battle of Lexington and Concord, one of the opening engagements of the war; Whittemore loaded his musket and ambushed a British relief brigade.
After he killed about 13 British soldiers, a British detachment finally reached his position. Even while armed with his trusty sword, he was shot in the face, stabbed with a bayonette 13 times, and left in a pool of blood. However, when Whittemore was discovered, he was still alive and even tried to load his musket to fight again. Whittmore lived another 18 years and then died of natural causes at the age of 98.
