Sprinkling sugar on a wound helps it heal faster!
![]() Sugar can help heal bedsores and other wounds when it is rubbed into it. Using sugar in wounds is a traditional African remedy and is being used in a trial at a British Hospital following a study by a Zimbabwean nurse. The study, done by Moses Murandu, showed that granulated sugar can kill bacteria that inhibits healing and causes chronic pain. Simply pour the sugar on the wound before dressing it. In the six-month study on 21 patients, Murandu used the sugar on bedsores, leg ulcers, and amputations when wounds didn’t respond to conventional treatments. Sugar draws out the water that allows bacteria growth in the wound. It's not painful, but actually reduces pain greatly. It’s also much cheaper than medicines and does the same thing. Mr. Murandu was give a grant to continue using sugar as a remedy on 100 more patients. He is very excited to bring relief to so many patients who have been suffering from chronic pain. Being extremely annoyed at the sound of someone eating or tapping their legs is an actual disorder. It's called Misophonia. ![]() Misophonia, the "rage" some of us get when listening to certain sounds like people eating or breathing, is a disorder. The world misophonia literally means “hatred of sound” and is a form a decreased sound tolerance. The term is interchangeable with the term Selective Sound Sensitivity and is targeted at specific sounds that hold negative meaning to the person whether loud or soft. The disorder isn’t entirely understood, but it might originate in the high central nervous system structure. It is thought to be a result of an abnormally strong connection between the autonomic and limbic systems. People with misophonia tend to be annoyed or even enraged by specific sounds like people biting their nails or tapping their legs. People with it may also be diagnosed with mood disorders. Symptoms usually begin right around puberty. It is speculated that the disorder is genetic. People use various coping methods. Most people simply leave the area, so that they don’t even have to listen to it. Others use headphones and music to drown out the sound. Some people actually feel the impulse to mimic what they are hearing. In extreme cases, the person distances themselves from socializing all together. The largest single-flight passenger load was 1,122 passengers, including 3 babies born mid-flight! This record-setting flight took place as part of Operation Solomon. Operation Solomon was an effort by the Israelis in 1991 to help rescue some Ethiopian Jews. The Ethiopian government under leader Mengistu Haile Mariam was about to fall to Eritrean and Tigrean. The goal of the operation was to take Ethiopian Jews to Israel. Israel was concerned about the Jews’ safety during the government transition, so they decided to take them out of the country. They also wanted to take advantage of the weakened government. The government had not allowed much emigration previously, but Israelis hoped that with the toppling of the government, they would be able to get the Jews out of Ethiopia. That’s how a plane ended up with so many people! It was a quick attempt at getting as many Jews as possible back to Israel. An EI AI 747 carried 1,122 passengers. Officially, it only registered 1,087, but some of the children hid in their mother’s skirts and got on that way. Planners only anticipated putting 760 people on the plane, but the Ethipian Jews were light, so they fit a lot more on. There were also 3 babies born on the way to Israel. An ancient tomb in Ireland is older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids of Giza! ![]() Newgrange tomb is what is called a passage tomb, which means that it contains a narrow passage made of stone and earth and containing several burial locations. Beyond simply being a passage tomb, it is a site of historical importance. It is a spiritual and ceremonial representation of the people who lived in Ireland over 5,000 years ago when it was constructed! Newgrange was carefully constructed, showing evidence of a society that understood concepts of construction and that was well-organized. It is a kidney-shaped mound and has an inner passage that is 19 meters long. It covers over an acre of land. In the passage is a cross-shaped chamber with a corbelled roof. It also has 97 curbstones decorated with art. It has been called a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Newgrange is one of several similar constructions that are built along the River Boyne. Together these structures are known as Brú na Bóinne. Knowthl is the largest of the mounds, but there are about 35 other smaller mounds. Japanese sword makers are only allowed to make 24 swords a year! ![]() The swords made by the Japanese are called Shinken, literally translated, it means real sword. The sword is "real" because it is an actual sharpened blade. Such a blade can be used for combat practice or for cutting. A blade that is not "real' would be an iaito or mogito, which is used only for practice and is not sharpened. Currently, there are 250 swordsmiths certified by the Japanese Swordsmith Association. According to Japanese law, these swordsmiths are only allowed to make 24 swords a year. These swordsmiths are highly skilled and each sword demands a large amount of time and effort to create. With all of these limitations, it’s no surprise that a Shinken comes at a high cost. At the lower end of cost, you might be able to get one for $6000. Since Shinken are so expensive they are often collected, rather than used. Antique Shinken swords are never used, because their value makes the idea of using them ridiculous. Instead, a martial arts expert might get a sword from China as sort of a knock-off Shinken that can actually be used. |

CeDhhVss back again with new facts!!!!
Sunlight takes 5 ½ hours to reach Pluto. ![]() The speed of light is 186,287 miles per second. It only takes 499 seconds (a little over 8 minutes) for light to travel from the Sun to Earth. You get a broad idea of just how large our solar system is when you think about it in this way: 186,287 miles/second x 5 ½ hours (330 seconds) = 61,474,710 miles to Pluto from the Sun! All snails are hermaphrodites. ![]() This means that every snail has both male and female reproductive organs. Snails are also considered to be sexually mature by the time they are a YEAR old! This is because a snail's life expectancy is typically about 5 to 7 years, meaning they have to get busy rather quickly in order to maintain the survival of the species! Also, a snail's reproductive organs (both kinds) are located near the top of their bodies (for easier access I guess). Birth control pills work on gorillas. In 2007 at the Belfast Zoo in Northern Ireland, a gorilla named Delilah was put on birth control. The reason for the precaution was that at 44 years old, pretty old for a gorilla, she was still healthy enough to mate. She was at an age in which pregnancy could be potentially dangerous, especially because she has arthritis. |

This might be the happiest cemetery on earth!
![]() It's called the Merry Cemetery and it's located in the village of Sapanta, Romania. It's famous because all the tombstones are colorful and painted with scenes from the buried person's life. Some people even have poems about them engraved in their tombstones. It's an unusual cemetery because most other European cultures consider death to be something solemn. It's thought that this cemetery has a connection to the Dacian culture, which believes in the immortality of the soul and the belief that death is a joyful moment because it leads to a better life. Why did the man who assassinated President Garfield choose a revolver with an Ivory Grip? ![]() President James Garfield was shot in Washington DC on July 2, 1881 at 9:30 AM, less than 4 months into Garfield's term as the 20th president of the US. Although he did not die immediately, he died 11 weeks later of complications resulting from the wound. He was the second of 4 US Presidents to be assassinated, and lived the longest after the shooter, compared to the others. The culprit was Charles J. Guiteau or Freeport, Illinois. He practiced law in Chicago and started an unsuccessful law firm. He briefly became a preacher before he turned to politics. He wrote a speech in support of candidate Garfield. The speech was delivered at most twice, but Guiteau believed he was responsible for Garfield's victory. He demanded to be made an ambassador, but his requests were rebuffed and eventually told to never return to the Secretary of State. Angry, he bought a gun. He had the choice between a revolver with a wooden grip or one with an ivory grip. He chose the ivory grip because he wanted it to look nice when it was eventually displayed in a museum. He then stalked President Garfield until he had a chance one day at a railroad station. Guiteau shot Garfield in the back twice before handing himself to the authorities. He was later executed by hanging. |

France used to have impotence courts. Men were forced to prove their sexual prowess in court!
In the 16th and 17th centuries, France had impotence courts. Husbands could be charged with erectile dysfunction and had to prove otherwise in front of witnesses. A husband’s inability to perform was one of the few reasons that the Church would allow a marriage to be annulled, so disgruntled women who could afford the legal costs would regularly charge their husbands with “injurious non-consummation” before ecclesiastical courts. The onus was placed on the husband to demonstrate his powers of erection before an expert team of priests, surgeons, and midwives. These learned observers would carefully examine his equipment to reach an opinion on its “elastic tension” and “natural motion,” before demanding “proof of ejaculation.” Any man who failed this test had only one more chance to avoid becoming a laughing-stock. He could demand Trial by Congress, where he would have sex with his wife before the team of experts as 100 percent proof that he could perform. The astonishing piece of legal pornography would take place in a neutral territory agreed upon by both parties. The married couple was examined by the court to make sure they were not concealing any devices, were watched during the act carefully, and examined afterwards. A man built a hotel that was designed to kill its guests! ![]() » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « HH Holmes is one of the first documented American serial killers. One of his sickest and notorious schemes is a “Castle” he built in Chicago that he opened at the time of the 1893 World’s Fair as a hotel. The hotel had numerous rooms and ways to kill people and it was so effective, that it’s unknown how many victims he claimed. Holmes bought a lot in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago and started building. The “Castle” as it was dubbed by the neighbors, was a full block in area and three stories high. He constantly changed the builders so that he was the only one who knew the full layout of the place. It has a maze of over 100 windowless rooms with doorways opening to brick walls, oddly-angled hallways, stairs to nowhere, door that only opened from the outside… overall a really creepy place. After the hotel was completed, Holmes selected mostly female victims from among his employees, and guests that came in from the world’s fair. He would torture and kill them by doing things like locking them in soundproof bedrooms with gas lines that let them asphyxiate. |

A guy pooped in a bunch of cans as an art exhibit. One sold for over EUR120k!
![]() Yes, you read that right. Italian artist Piero Manzoni pooped in 90 tin cans in 1961 and called it “Artist’s Sh*t.” Each can weighed 30 grams and has labels in Italian, English French and German, stating: Artist's Sh*t Contents 30 gr net Freshly preserved Produced and tinned in May 1961 This ‘exhibit’ was a success and endured for many years. For example, On May 23 2007 sold at Sotheby’s for €124,000. The cans were originally valued according to their weight in gold. In Medieval England, people thought it was impossible to get pregnant without having an orgasm. Rape that got pregnant were punished! Despite what the fantasy novels tell us, there’s a lot to roll the eyes at in the medieval era. Back then, it was thought that a woman could not get pregnant if she did not have an orgasm. This raises the question of “What happened to women who got pregnant through rape?” Well it all fell on her whether she got pregnant or not. If she got pregnant, then she was accused of enjoying it enough to have an orgasm, so the rapist wouldn’t be convicted. This was obviously very medieval logic. If she didn’t pregnant, though, nothing good happened either. If a woman was raped and no child was conceived after, then there was no evidence to prove she had been raped and the case was dismissed. So unfortunately it was a lose-lose situation. |

The vibrator was invented before the vacuum.
To be clear, this is on a consumer level. Vibrators were first used for medicinal reasons in 1878, and didn’t become consumer available products until 1900. It was ten years before the electric vacuum became an available consumer product. The vibrator was actually the fifth electric home appliance. Only the sewing machine, fan, tea kettle, and toaster were consumer products that came first. It took a decade before the iron and frying pan would come along as consumer products too! Most of these “vintage” vibrators are powered by A.C. electric power (about 80% of them). You can view some of the models at the source, but be forewarned that you should only visit it if you’re old enough to know what a vibrator is. Despite that, it’s a completely safe for work gallery. South Koreans must enter their national ID number to access internet adult content! ![]() The South Korean government censors the internet. They also censor election information. They have blocked over 30 sites seen as sympathetic to North Korea. In 2007, numerous bloggers posts were deleted for their criticism of the presidential candidates. Sites with unrated games, pornography, and gambling have also been blocked. They keep a tight grip on what their citizens can access on the internet. |

The Nazi law stating that all gay Germans are criminals wasn’t repealed until 1994!
![]() Homosexual concentration camp prisoners weren’t acknowledged as victims of Nazi persecution nor were they given any reparations like other groups were. Though homosexuals were liberated in the 1960s, the law against them wasn’t repealed until 1994. They were even kept on modern sex offenders lists. Some were even put in prison to finish their sentences without acknowledgement of concentration camp time spent. Since the 1980s, some European cities have erected monuments to remember the homosexuals who were murdered and persecuted during the Holocaust. Writing Xmas did not originate as a secular attack on Christmas! It's a very popular misconception that when people abbreviate Christmas as "Xmas" they're going along an attack plan to get 'Christ out of Christmas.' In reality, the usage of Xmas can be traced all the way back to 1021. X stands for the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the word Christ in Greek. When monks in Great Britain translated ancient texts into Old English as far back as the year 1021, they would write X instead of Christ. The first recorded usage of Xmas dates all the way back to 1551. |

The government of Mexico imposes fines for individuals who perform their national anthem incorrectly.
This policy also applies to other patriotic symbols such as the Mexican flag and national seal. A recent example of this precedent in action occurred back in October at a soccer match in Guadalajara against Monterrey. Singer Guadalupe Madrigal confused some lyrics in the Mexican national anthem. She didn't do so intentionally and she apologized. After reviewing Madrigal's financial situation, the government chose to fine her $40 - but she could have been subject to potential fines of up to $880! One of Al Capone's early jobs after dropping out of school was racking pins at a bowling alley. < --- U MAD?He did this when he was 14 years old instead of going to school. Then at night he was a bartender and a bouncer at a bar run by a notorious mobster, which gave Capone an early start in organized crime. He later committed two murders for his then-boss Frankie Yale, who had him transferred to Chicago, and then history was made. An Ohio man changed his name to Optimus Prime.
![]() Optimus Prime - the artist formerly known as Scott Edward Noll of Mansfield, OH - is member of Ohio's 5694th National Guard unit. Prime opted to change his name on his 30th birthday in honor of the Transformer, who had filled the void left by his father's untimely death early in his childhood. Prime says that the real Optimus had become very much of an idealized replacement father and the values he stands for have made him the person that he is today - the cartoon character even was Prime's impetus for choosing to serve his country! The menstrual cycles of women who live together tend to synchronize. ![]() This was based on a study on 135 women in a college dorm. Women who lived in the same rooms with different menstrual cycles started syncing their cycles together. What triggers this is actually their pheromones. Scientists tested this theory out by placing samples of women's sweat under the noses of other female test subjects. Over time, the test subjects' periods started to conform to the women who donated the sweat. Another thing that can affect a woman's period is being around men. Being around men tends to reduce the length of each period and increase their frequency, and make them more regular. Dinosaur fossils were known as "dragon bones" until about 200 years ago. In 1824, Dean William Buckland of Oxford discovered a dinosaur fossil which he named Megalosaurus, which means "great lizard." This was the first dinosaur to be accurately described as a reptile! The word "dinosaur" comes from Sir Richard Owen in 1842. He used the term "Dinosauria" to mean "fearfully great reptiles". By putting the dinosaurs in their own taxonomic group, Owen was intending to make an argument against progressive evolution, but really the dinosaurs served as strong evidence in favor of evolution. |

The first microwave oven was nearly the size of a refrigerator.
<--- sori no bigger size. The original microwave began in 1946 as the "Speedie Weenie Project," a secret effort by Dr. Percy Spencer and Roly Hanson, a pair of engineers at the Raytheon Company. The next year, the finalized product hit the market, but was over 5 ½ feet tall and weighed over 750 pounds! At around $5000, this newfangled "luxury" did not come cheap either - especially when you factor in the cost of the plumbing needed to cool the magnetron tube after each usage! Bamboo can grow at a rate of 2 inches per hour. With the modern 'green' movement calling for better sources of renewable energy, bamboo is a very strong candidate in many ways. When you consider that it takes some oak trees 120 YEARS to reach full maturity, you can see why this sort of rapid growth could prove invaluable in the near future. Bamboo is not the perfect solution, however. A major flaw is that it is far less durable and sturdy than tree wood. Also, most of the bamboo is currently produced in China or rainforests are cut down in order to free up land in which to plant it. Coca-Cola had to be careful when transliterating its name to Chinese in order to avoid meanings such as "bite the wax tadpole." ![]() When Coca-Cola first entered the Chinese market back in 1928 they had to come up with a way to represent themselves in the Mandarin language. To do so, they had to choose from 200 different symbols that could be used to sound like "ko-ka-ko-la" but did not combine to form a nonsensical phrase. While the company searched for the right set of characters, many Chinese shopkeepers began producing their own "ko-ka-ko-la" signs. Because the character "la" means wax, many hilarious phrases were formed, such as "female horse fastened with wax," "wax-flattened mare," and "bite the wax tadpole." The company finally settled on the phrase "k'o-k'ou-k'o-lê," which means "to allow the mouth to be able to rejoice!" |

Ladybugs are technically carnivores.
Ladybugs may look pretty, but they are actually aphid-killing machines! Aphids are small destructive insects that feed by sucking the vital juices out of the leaves and stems of plants. A ladybug is a gardener's best friend because they love to eat these ruinous pests. One thing to remember, however - if you choose to release ladybugs into your garden to combat aphids, you should not also spray pesticides or you will kill both the good and the bad bugs. |
