Goldfish were originally grayish green or brown.

user posted image
Goldfish are just the domesticated version of carp. Natural genetic mutations caused some of them to have gold skin, and the Chinese used to raise them as pets and specifically breed the gold-tinted mutant carp, during the Tang Dynasty. The Prussian carp is the wild version of modern goldfish. It's usually gray, but some of the early mutations that led to modern goldfish still occur, causing yellow-tinted carp.

In 1518 there was a DANCING PLAGUE in Strasbourg, France. 400 people danced uncontrollably for A MONTH, dozens of lives were lost and NO ONE KNOWS WHY.

user posted image
It all started when a woman named Frau Troffea decided to start dancing in the streets in July of 1518. What ensued was an inexplicable city-wide dancing craze, where hundreds took to street dancing. By the end of the month-long dance-off dozens had died from heart attacks, strokes, and exhaustion. Scientists to this day have no explanation for why this happened.
Theories suggest that people were suffering from mass hysteria brought on by distressing conditions, or that they were being punished by the wrath of Saint Vitus, or that people had been consuming a chemical with similar properties to LSD.

A man was accidentally stabbed through the skull with an iron rod. He lived 11 more years after the accident.

When Phineas Gage was a railroad worker in 1848 a bizarre accident nearly took his life. When handling explosive materials with a tool called a "tamping iron" (a 3-foot iron pole) sparks started flying. Phineas turned away for a second, just as an explosion launched the pole straight through his head.
The pointy end of the pole entered his head through the left cheekbone under his eye, went through his brain, and went out through the middle of his forehead. After the pole went through his head, Phineas walked home to tell his landlord and then went to see a doctor.
Though he survived, people said that his behavior was very different after the accident. Rumor has it that Phineas appeared at famous showman P.T. Barnum's Museum, to show off his injury, carrying with him the 3 foot pole that went through his head. Check out a real picture of Phineas Gage with the 3 foot pole that went through his head!
Phineas suffered severe convulsions for the rest of his life and died 11 years after his accident. Historians refer to his unusual circumstances as "the American Crowbar Case", despite the accident not actually involving a crowbar.

The opposite sides of dice always add up to seven.

user posted image
As you can see in the picture, the 1 is on the opposite side of the 6, the 2 is on the opposite side of the 5, and the 3 is on the opposite side of the 4. Also, there are three different ways to get to 7 when you roll 2 dice, which means that a 7 is the most common outcome when you roll 2 dice.

Every year, dogs kill more people in the US than Great White sharks have in the past 100 years.

user posted image
Overall, dogs kill more people in the US every year than sharks do. You are more likely to be killed by a dog than by a shark, and you are much more likely to be bitten by a dog than bitten by a shark. There has only been one confirmed fatal shark attack in the US in 2009. Compare that to 25 deaths in the US caused by dogs in that same year.

The ostrich lays the largest eggs on land but, the whale shark lays the largest eggs IN THE WORLD.

user posted image
An egg from a whale shark measuring 14 inches in diameter was found in the Gulf of Mexico in 1953.
Those giant whale shark eggs grow up to be really big sharks. Whale sharks are the largest sharks in the world, and therefore the largest fish in the world too. The largest whale shark ever found was 40 feet, 7 inches.

The fastest creature on the planet is the Peregrine Falcon. It can dive out of the sky at over 200 km/h (124 mph)!

Peregrine falcons live everywhere. They are on every continent (except Antarctica, which is pretty much the exception to everything). Also, while they tend to prefer living in the planes, they also have been known to inhabit urban environments, jumping off of buildings and eating pigeons.

Dolly Parton lost a Dolly Parton look-alike contest.

user posted image <-- eww
Dolly Parton showed up to a Dolly Parton lookalike contest on Santa Monica Boulevard, as a joke. She was surprised when it turned out that she didn't win, since that means that the judges thought someone else looked more like her than herself.
"I didn't know if they knew it or not and if it was a joke because they used to have all these Dollys down on Santa Monica Boulevard.
They had the contest and I just got in the line and somebody else won. I don't think they really did know it was me"

this is gonna be a winrar, now i know where the origin of the word [crap]...

Thomas CRAPPER popularized the toilet.

user posted image user posted image user posted image
He didn't invent the toilet, but his company, Crapper & Co, was a popular plumbing company in the late 1800s. In the 1880s Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey all had Crapper brand products. Crapper also patented a lot of toilet innovations, including the flushing mechanism that is still being used today. Among some of his less successful patents was an early version of an automatic flushing mechanism. Unfortunately, the spring that triggered the flusher also sent the seat flying up to smack people on their backsides!

In 2010, Carrier Pigeons were faster than broadband for video delivery!

user posted image
The premise of this test was to see if our modern technology is actually as efficient as we think, and the results proved us slightly arrogant. Carrier pigeons have been used for thousands of years to deliver messages to places far away that needed information faster than humans are able to travel.
Today such methods have become obsolete with the development of cars and the Internet, but perhaps they shouldn’t be discounted so soon. Ten pigeons had USBs attached to their legs and were sent on a roughly two hour, 120 km journey to deliver the file. At the same time, researchers began downloading a 300MB video file.
Surprisingly, by the time the pigeons arrived at their destination, the file had only been downloaded 24%!
Those who carried out the experiment say their purpose was not to attempt to implement carrier pigeons again, but to highlight how uneven the Internet is throughout Britain. In fact, the same experiment was carried out in South Africa with even more abysmal results for technology!

An Olympic gold medalist almost died in a plane crash. Took TWO years to be able to walk again and went on to win another gold medal!

user posted image
Betty Robinson was born in 1911 in Riverdale, Illinois. She ran her first 100-meter race at the age of sixteen and came in second only to the American record holder! The next time she ran, she equaled or surpassed the world record, but was not formally recognized. She attended the Amsterdam Olympics and not only won the gold medal, but shattered the world record.
She seemed to be on top of the world until in 1931, tragedy struck. While flying, something in the plane malfunctioned and it crashed. Robinson was found among the wreckage in a severe coma and was believed to be dead. The civilian that discovered her was so convinced that he stuck her in his truck and drove her body to an undertaker, who discovered she was still alive.
Seven months later she woke up, but the process of recovery was much slower. It took six months until she could even stand out of her wheelchair, and two years until she was able to walk. She missed the 1932 Olympics, and in 1936 was still unable to kneel for the start of the race, but decided to compete anyway and fulfilled the definition of resilience by winning herself a second Olympic gold!

James Bond Facts

Ian Fleming made James Bond's weapon of choice a 'lady's gun.' He changed it once a fan wrote to him.

user posted image vs user posted image
The Beretta 418 pistol was James Bond’s gun of choice until a fan wrote Ian Fleming a letter saying it was a lady’s gun. The Beretta M418 is a 6.35 mm Italian 'pocket pistol,' which was first introduced between 1919 and 1922. It's so small you can fit it in the palm of your hand. While the fan said it was a lady's gun, it was actually pretty popular among high ranking Italian officers during World War II. However, due to the size, it's really underpowered for real combat.

It was a relatively popular gun and Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond series, originally had it as Bond’s gun of choice. Fleming stuck with the gun for some time until the Dr. No movie was to be released and he received a letter from a fan criticizing its use. The fan said the Beretta was 'a lady’s gun' and suggested the Walther PPK as a replacement. Fleming liked the man’s suggestion. The way he did it was he wrote a character in called Major Boothroyd, who was 'the greatest small-arms expert in the world' and insisted Bond replace his gun with the Walther PPK.

One of the Bond Girls Was Born a Man!

user posted image
One of the Bond Girls, Caroline Cossey, was actually born as Barry Kenneth Cossey. She is now an English model and perhaps most popular for being the first transsexual person to pose for Playboy.
Courtney fought for her right to be legally considered a woman, and triumphed. She began her hormone therapy at 17, and a few years later, had a full sex reassignment surgery. Barry was somewhat feminine growing up, because he had a condition called Klinefelter's syndrome.
People with Klinefelter's usually have two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome. In Cossey's case, he had three X chromosomes instead. He never got along with boys and his closest companion was his sister.
Courtney was cast as an extra in the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only." The tabloid News of the World responded by doing what they had threatened to for years; revealing that she was transsexual. This brought her modeling and acting career to a halt until she decided to fight the assault. In 1982, Cossey retaliated with her first auto-biography; I Am a Woman.

James Bond has killed over 150 men and slept with 44 women so far!

This is since James Bond's creation in 1962. 3/4 of the women he's slept with have tried to kill him! Funnily enough, James Bond's favorite drink, the Martini (shaken, not stirred) contains about 130 calories, which is about how much he burns when having sex!

Liam Neeson refused to be James Bond because he didn't want to star in Action Movies!

user posted image
Liam Neeson was reportedly offered the role of James Bond in 1995s Goldeneye. He reportedly turned it down because he wasn't interested in starring in action movies! Of course, he would revert that decision only 4 years later when he starred in Star Wars, Episode I. He must have really regretted it because he also showed a particular set of skills in his 2008 movie Taken that would have made him a great 007.
It's interesting to think, though, what could have been if Liam Neeson had been James Bond, instead of Pierce Brosnan. Interestingly enough, on the list of rejected actors for the role of Bond is Robert Pattison "because his image of being dirty and possibly his age."

last facts for tonite...

Pus is just dead white blood cells!

Ever had a cut that began oozing white pus or even a pimple and you just shrugged it off as something that happens? Have you ever wondered what exactly that white stuff is? While it’s certainly disgusting to look at, it’s actually much less gross than most people think and is a sign that your body is overcoming an infection.
It can be several different colors other than white, including yellow or even green. When you’re body has an infection, white blood cells rush to the area to fight the foreign bacteria. A battle of sorts ensues and most of the time the white blood cells are victorious. The dead white blood cells are pushed to the surface with any bacteria that is still alive that needs to be pushed out of the body.
The pus is a mixture of both the white blood cells called neutrophils and some the minimal bacteria that’s still alive. If it’s a small amount of pus, such as a pimple, it just needs to be wiped clean and washed and you’re good as new.
