wise to get mid range .... as noted, it'll perform better and last longer, generally ... and some believe they learnt quicker with higher end stuff
and if you don't want 'em anymore, their resale ain't too bad

depends on wot you wanna do

luring?
this is where one keeps on throwing out/casting lures and retrieving them, reel them back
one can make use of myriad lures, spoons, soft plastics, small jigs, there're topwater (pencils, poppers, frogs, sliders), sinking, suspended

bottom fishing?
bait and wait

jigging? squidding?
use of jigs instead of lures and technique differs

trolling?
lures and sometimes bait is used, boat is in motion

popping?
cast out and retrieve poppers

fly?
fly fishing ... whole different ball game

possibilities and combinations are endless ...

back to square one:
budget
target fish
areas you intend to fish
method/technique

thanks for the advise... btw do you use fluorocarbon for the leader?
*
leader material's personal preference .. some prefer FC some prefer mono
some no leader, direct to snap and/or lure or hook
mind boggling choice to choose from

better keep the marnee
as mentioned ... i was kidding hehehheheheh

thank you, rory ... just lemme know when and where .. will try to make it
design ah ... not too particular
have other rods that may be used as reference

Street, if you can join the gang for one session, it might help you decide what you wanna try/do
river fishing requires a slightly different approach

Street, don't need tackle to join ... most kakis anywhere welcome newbies
you get a chance to ask, find out, discuss, try out .. as our bro has also volunteered his spare

i personally think that's the best way to go ... unless you know what you wanna do adi and it's just a matter of getting what you want/need

mebbe read up (as alternative to joining kakis) on various types of fishing one can do
fresh ... salt ... pond, lake, impoundment, river, stream, sea
rod & line poundage, purpose
proper use of drag
suggest you pop by a tackle shop or so to window shop, talk to proprietors
hold some reels & rods in your hands .. get a feel
hold ABU, daiwa, shimano rods and reels ... compare prices
read more .. ask more ... hehehhehehe once you've identified what you wanna do and get, it'll be easier to decide what gear to get on 500

most salt payponds cost slightly more than FW payponds
some allow you to take back the fish
some don't
some repurchase the caught fish from you and you reduce your fishing fees
i like Tow Foo Sportfishing in rawang rm20 per rod per person the whole day
luring and bottom allowed, treble hooks not allowed, CnR, except for tilapia ... IF you can get 'em tongue.gif
wanna try Fish Valley but haven't had time yet

i totally understand you,.. will join your club soon next month onwards hahaa
But i think going to jpond or exotic once a month is OK geh.
Some also wont agree cos wild fishes fight stronger... that also i totally agree.
But work calls,.. we have to be on stand by most the time.

word, bro ... word ... hahhahahaha
must find opportunity to tag along to JPond at least once

might i add that planning our schedule is easier too.

wild fish hunting can take up to 3/4 of a day... and with missus and/or kids in tow, who has that kind of luxury of time to go hunt...  sad.gif
*
yeah man .. no way .... wifey still ok ... but bringing along three children with varying needs ... kenot fish

fully agree.... fishing is a "social" kinda sport.... must go with kakis.... fish fish, tok kok sing song, no fish also never mind.... got fish bonus lo...  whistling.gif  whistling.gif

and almost every angler i meet quite willing to share their experiences also (including lots of fisherman story about eh "big one" that got away... standard lo... kakakakaka..... i think i do that also la.... )... learn something new everytime....

And i think most of us will have some spare rods and reels to spare also... but dun expect it to be top notch la... kekeke....  i still remember back in the days i bought those cheapo RM10 rods and RM20 reels... some still can use geh... but good to start with cos then you'll feel the contrast/difference compared to the rods and reels u really want to get...

do u have any rough idea on what kind of fishing you want to do?

luring will cost a bomb. usually those lures catch more humans than fish... haha...

hmmm ...

mebbe .... get a coupla poppers, pencils and shallow cranks ... get R2S or strike pro or vibrax blue fox stuff ... not expensive ... say rm8-15/each

with that one rod, try out the above as well as some white 2-3-inch grub with EWG jigheads ... 1pkt grub rm12-15, the jig hooks less than rm15/pkt of 4-5pcs

bottom is relatively cheap with see-hum, earthworms, fish fillet, shrimp, squid, tow foo, chicken feed, roti canai, special mixture feeds ... wotever works
cube bread, spray some pandan flavouring, sun dry the bread and you're good to go
live shrimp at (saltwater) payponds are usually rm1/each

some swivels, snap locks, hooks .... i encourage Street to learn some basic knots ... animatedknots.com is pretty handy
the palomar, snell, clinch & improved clinch, loops will see you through
albright, improved albright and FG are quite multipurpose ... good for fresh & salt
i surrender with the bimini blush.gif icon_question.gif
practising with thicker lines help ... when tying hooks, stick something onto the eye (of the hook) to avoid an accident as you may not be used to it yet
that said ... heheheheheh ...

some swear by the uni and uni-to-uni or blood knot
i asked wifey to help by holding one end while i hold the other .. then pull steadily
same thing again but with sudden jerk instead (hands were towel wrapped at all times)
with differing line strengths ... at all times, the line broke ... but the FG did not fail
from then on, it's mainline>FG>leader without fear, of snap or swivel hitting the guide if i reel in fast, anymore

tying FG has been relatively simple after finding a few youtube vids
secret is in keeping the lines tight as you go along
