He is so helpful, getting a brand new tv top to try, but still the same. cry.gif

hey web sifus, I just bought an Asus RT-N12HP yesterday but whatever I do just seems to not be able to get me internet connection.

You can see from below:
- It says I am connected to the internet
- Upgraded to the latest firmware
- Green icon (top right) indicates connection

BUT at the bottom right, still shows that connection is limited. This is driving me crazy! I'm really out out of ideas here. Somebody please help!!

i encountered this once.

try rebooting - just click on it.

when done, power router off, restart.

Last resort, use the reset button. Power off, Press and hold button, power on, for 15 secs, then let go.

Redo everything.

Yes, the wireless range. So, I just buy a new long antenna model and replace the existing Silver UNIFI modem? What model do you recommend me to buy ?
*
"basic" use, rt n12hp b1 is at rm2xx is enough.

good for typical terrace house 50ft wifi, unless u have a lot of metal all around the house.

if u want dual band, USB at router, go for higher more pricey models.

hi,

like to see your views and suggestion, if any.

.. been using rtn12hp_b1 for about 3 years, totally satisfied.
.. recently got upgraded to unifi 50mbps.
.. use mainly wifi; some devices 10 ft away, some 40 ft away; double storey house.
.. set up now fails to stream uhd4k video and hd audio nicely over wifi with SMB.

do u think a better router will work, what model do u suggest?

thank you.

Hi AVFAN,

When talking about streaming 4K video, you can have a look at the models that have 5GHz.

But due to high frequency, 5GHz are weak in penetrating the wall compare to 2.4GHz.

For the device that is 40ft away, you can set the RT-N12HP_B1 as AP mode(more preferable) or Repeater mode to extend the WiFi coverage.

You can have a look at RT-AC1200G+, RT-AC55UHP and above.

Thank you
*
thanks for response.

on page 1, i read:

RT-AC55UHP - RM569
RT-AC1200HP - RM399

what's the diff between ac1200hp and ac1200g+?

Hi AVFAN,

Actually the price on first is from 2016. The RT-AC1200HP already EOL.

The RT-AC1200G+ is new model.

For the detailed spec, you can have a look at the link below.

https://www.asus.com/Networking/RT-AC1200G-plus/

This RT-AC1200G+ has limited USB application, feature like AiCloud and Download Master are not available in this models.

Thank you
*
oh... but the webpage clearly talks about aicloud...? it's wrong?

hi asus,

seeking your suggestion if i need to change router and if so, which is best choice.

i hv been using rtn12hpb1 for >4 years now, extremely pleased with it.

i recently changed 2 lan cables to cat6.

wifi is impt, from one corner to another, longest distance is almost 60ft (and yes, i can get almost full speed).

i should be moving from unifi 50mbps to 100 next week.

.. will the existing router be able to deliver optimal performance?
.. i know my router is only 2.4ghz but if i change to dual, i m concerned if 5ghz can cover 60ft..?
.. if better change, will cheaper ac1300uhp do or go for something higher like ac86u?
.. i do not see my needs expanding too fast at this time.

thanks for help.

My friend, if you're moving from 50 to 100Mbps, then I am sorry to say, your router might not fully utilize the internet speed due to it comes with fast ethernet port. To fully utilize the speed over 100Mbps, you need a gigabit router.

Any asus router that supports dual band can make it (gigabit)

5ghz has less coverage than 2.4ghz. 5ghz not capable to penetrate through multiple walls.
*
does that mean i will not be able to get full 100mbps for wifi?

i do not have many walls and metal structures for wifi coverage.

yes, i m concerned that 5ghz can take higher speed but can't cover the distance - that's no good.

can't get the best of both?

as it is, i can get full 50mbps.

Fast ethernet has a wan port and 4xlan port that able to handle 10/100 Mbit/s.

Gigabit ethernet has a wan and 4xlan that able to handle 10/100/1000 Mbit/s.

For more information, you can refer here.

Nowadays, all ac router comes with gigabit ethernet port and the wireless able to handle speed more than 100Mbps.

As an example, if you are using your old router which has fast ethernet port with 100Mbps package, you only will be able to get the speed between 80 to 94Mbps. If you are using gigabit ethernet router, you able to fully utilize your isp package like heaven between 100 to 104Mbps.

You able to get full 50Mbps due to the router can support that speed my friend.
*
ok, thanks, i follow.

but what about the wifi coverage?

if a dual band with 5ghz can't cover a certain distance well, will that mean same speed but little getting thru = no good?

Mostly, you can get 50 - 60% of bandwidth from your isp package if the bar shows 3/5 or 2/5. 5ghz cannot get through multiple walls compared with 2.4ghz. To overcome this, please download wifi analyzer to scan the network and have a look on which wireless channel has the most rating and choose the best rating. Normally, i set chl 11 for 2.4hz at 20mhz and auto for 5ghz wireless signal.
*
alright, i will first test it with existing router, see how it goes.

if not satisfied, will get a new router.

appreciate your comments.

any other comment, welcome and thanks!

*
i m getting full 50mbps with rtn12hpb1 at 55ft wifi.

it may depend on many factors... distance, walls, metal, what device...

if old device old wifi modules, maybe cannot get full.

but was told won't get full 100mbps when i upgrade... may 70% of it... will see how...

hi asus,

several people have been asking this, but no useful response.

can u pls comment?

basically, we are looking for a cost effective router for unifi 100mbps as the stock router is crap.

typical double story home, mix of ethernet/wifi, old/new devices, no fanciful/complex usage.

is the ac1300uhp a good choice?

thanks.

i will be buying something soon.

All on holiday bro but Asus is a good brand. If you really want something good, get the Asus RT-AC68U or the 86U or even the 88U. All is top end of the Asus models.
*
i also know those...

more $$$, for large houses, usb port, print share...

i don't need those features.

just a no frills ac router, like the rm199 rtn12hp fast ethernet which is superb.
