hi guys...

rec'd the TUF AX4200, installed, working ok.
was using RT-AC1300UHP.
unifi 800mbps getting ready for 1, 2gbps upgrade.
double storey house, longest distance from router at lower corner is 55ft
no extender, no mesh.
15 devices, mostly wifi, incl Android TV.

new router, set up via phone app as per instruction, updated firmware.
use pc to play around a bit.
first impressions: nice looking, not too difficult to set up, plentiful features.

a few questions, need a little help, pls, comment, thanks:

1. this band steering feature, i.e. auto toggle 2.4 <->5ghz - it seems to always fall back to 2.4, lower speed for any device.
So, i do not set it on.

2. is it correct to set 2.4ghz at 20/40mhz, 5ghz at 20/40/80/160mhz?

3. control channel shud be set to 40, 52 or auto?

4. my devices mostly old, better not tick IPv6, correct?

5. QoS should be NO, right?

6. my PC is 8 yrs old, using Asus UT USB AC55 adaptor for 5ghz, 4-5 yrs now.
PC now cannot detect the 5ghz network, can only detect 2.4.
When i put the AC1300UHP back, it detects again.
What may be the explanation?
Adaptor too old, firmware, driver too old?
Or something to do with the naming of the wifi networks?
I use xxxx and xxxx_5G.
i hope there is a solution as it is a disappointment to get lower speed now for my PC.

the rest of the devices work fine; even at furthest point, 5ghz still works well enough.
no need extender or mesh required.
overall, other than the PC 5ghz adaptor problem, this router is good.

same, i also get max 3xx at close range.

but i m pleased that at 50-55ft, i can still get 1xx for the newer devices.

will try some the things u mentioned, see if anything useful!

u mean "control channel"?

i noticed it was set on auto, settled itself at 52.

the AC1300UHP was set at 40.

will try 40 n see how.

White box... I never had it, can't say.

Had the museum class silver one, didn't use it for years but just used unifitv app direct on androidtv TV.

I recently got the new upb V2 box when I subscribed to something new.

Lan4 worked fine on rtac1300uhp.

I just tested it with tuf ax4200, works same, good.

This new box is pretty gud, a hybrid. It can work on Lan4 or WiFi for unifitv app. Other apps like Netflix, Disney, need to use lan1-3 or turn on WiFi at box setting. Box delivers 4khdr, Atmos with netflix uhd, DD+ with Disney n Iqiyi.

Find a chance to get this box!

maybe i m not as techy as some of u guys or my needs are simple.

new TUF ax4200 has been v gud for me.

everything's working well now.

i do check the test speeds but i care more about whether what i want to work will work.

so far, so good. i have packed up the repeater, no need.

dun care about mesh. my house is a DSL... not bungalow or 3, 4 storeys condo.

netflix 4hdr works very smoothly now at wifi 55ft.

Unifitv upbV2 box works gud with Lan4.

torrent... i get new max speed 30MB/s, that's 240mbps... i won't expect twice that speed over wifi.

now, i just wait for unifi to upgrade me 800->1, 2 gbps.

will be ok for next 10 years.

not satisfied with 78xmbps ethernet with new asus TUF AX4200, i changed out this cable.

i thought of this after reading a reminder for this in another thread.

i had thought that cable in place was a cat6e which i bought at a shop.

but it wasn't labeled; many such cables aren't label... so, be careful!

after changing to a cable that came with the new router (also unlabeled!), lan speed is now 82x (previously 78x); wifi speed improved overall too.

just to share...

i had earlier changed from channel 52 to 40. it was ok.

i then tried channel 36. appears to be a little better, i stay with this.

this morning, changed cable modem->router, saw much improved results.

v happy now.

likely a mix of many reasons.... just need to check ev erything, try everything!

2.4ghz... i forgot to check what i set on my old router... i remember it wasn't in the congested middle.

may hv to trial n error.

checked traffic analyzer...neighbors mostly using 4-12.

so, i use channel 2.

i m on 800mbps.

ethernet now gives me 800-830.

5ghz wifi... a mixed bag... ookla, fast.com, netflix app give quite different results... dunno which one to trust!

close to router 300-500, seen peaks at 6xx.

furthest point about 60ft with plenty obstacles, i get 50-100 which is still good enough for netflix 4KHDR streaming.

no wifi6... my eqpt mostly old.. 2-8yrs.

seems most of my neighbors set to AUTO; their channels keep changing as i change mine!

and traffic analyzer charts may not necessarily show u the best actual channels to use.

cud also be due to various spots in the house experiencing diff strengths with diff devices.

after monitoring it for a day or so, i finally settled for channel 6 on 2.4ghz and 40 on 5ghz.

for now, this appears to be the best overall of all combinations i tried.

netflix doesn't take much; even netflix uhd requires 15mbps only.

possibly the two devices are in very poor wifi locations?

yr subscribed speed?

check yr channel... try using the same channel as old router.

i had that issue, ok now.

i dunno much about these problems but i did get something like that, but much less serious.

on pc windows, a few torrent (reputed malware) sites wudn't load at all (OK with last router); used a diff browser, they all load nicely.

no such issue seen with other devices.

i think possibly something to do with the firewalls at AC4200 router or devices...?

i am interested to read comments too.

but, do u hv a need to mesh... some devices not working well with single router?

i just started using same tuf-ax4200, been good... using 800mbps.

i get sufficient coverage in my house like yours.. ok, furthest at 60ft.

i also found out older devices won't work as well as the newer ones even if they both run on 5ghz.

also, performance varies with diff apps, e.g. Netflix outperforms others, always smooth.

I m not experienced enuf to recommend.

However, I suggest u try tufax4200 first, see if it's gud enuf for what u need. I had a similar idea at first when I decided to change old router. Result was the new router was able to cover what I want. So, no need mesh.

Anyway, I hope experts can comment, what's best for aimesh with tufax4200. Waiting...

is the AX3000 a suitable one for mesh with AX4200 in terms of cost and performance?

or wud u recommend something else?

for 800mbps, 1, 2 gbps?

ok... i m not looking for the best of the best!

i m actually quite happy now with just the AX4200, no mesh.

just in case i need better wifi coverage upstairs...

XT12 looks too pro for me!

can XD5 do a decent job with AX4200?

in the event i get upgraded n need a mesh...

BTW, the RT-AC1300UHP can't be used as a mesh, right?
