Finally solve, cannot play game on battery alone, I use battery and the game lag, on ac the game super smooth and nice!
*
If the laptop is not on steroid (AC power tongue.gif) the components will be clocked down... I suspect it's for the battery lifespan... or else, you'll have a very short lifetime there...

QUOTE(Stefan How @ Jan 29 2013, 12:26 AM)
Kinda curious,is it possible to dual boot window 8 and window 7 home premium on Y480? Do i have to wipe everything?  rclxub.gif  is there any guide for setting up dual boot? im not that tech savvy kind of guy..but yeah.. sweat.gif
*
Just install Win8 in another partition. You don't have to wipe anything if you have enough space. Just shrink current partition if you don't have any, install Win8 in that partition, Win8 installer will take care of the booting options...

more details you want to google though...

I like the steroid phrase  rclxms.gif ..LOL..and about the window 8,it need to be upgrade from the window 7 to window 8 right? so i mean is that it erase the existence of window 7 to upgrade to window 8 is it? The promotion for the window 8 is until 31 of this month right?  sweat.gif
*
if you buy the upgrade version, it'll upgrade... though I think there's another workaround here... not sure if it'll work out or not...

the win8 upgrade version can be used for clean installation after you upgrade once. maybe after upgrading, you can work your way to dual boot. re-format, install win7, and install win8 again. it might work, it might not... I can't say for certain coz the way win8 works is a little bit different from previous iteration of windows as i know. maybe somebody else knows better?

on a side note, Win8 Pro Upgrade is going to be RM800++ after promotional period... rclxub.gif

I'f I'm not mistaken, it will always run at lower speed out of two... you probably can OC the 1GHz to 1.25GHz... though I won't recommend it...

1) Can u snap a picture of ur y480 back?does it change the shape or look of the laptop (i mean does it look bulkier)? 2)How much it cost for modding by moving the hdd to the odd?what is caddy? I guess it voids the warranty right? icon_question.gif
*
Caddy is just a case to carry the HDD into the ODD bay. I dont think it will void any warranty, but I'm not 100% sure on the policy. As it's just a plug and play thing, I dont think it'll void the warranty. Changing RAM won't void the warranty (iinm), I dont think this caddy will void them, but you can always replace it back with ODD and replace the HDD in its original position.

The cost, for the caddy is around RM50...

So u mean that i have to take out the whole ODD to replace it with Caddy(or Hdd)? Then the ODD is left in the open?Ohya,Caddy is like a cover is it? Means even if i did insert a disc it wont read or work right since its like a container (i read it in wikipedia, still kinda confuse..) Anyway Chopin, what is your temperature of your Hdd when under heavy load like gaming or other things? rclxub.gif
*
Whole ODD will be taken out and replaced with HDD caddy... ODD will not be usable unless you're using a USB converter to connect the ODD with USB. There's no place to insert a disc in the caddy at all, other than the hard disk...

QUOTE(mengfart @ Feb 5 2013, 10:29 PM)
What is the idle temp for Y580 ?

On gaming wise and idle wise ?
*
idling for me is around 45'C-50'C for CPU right now in 25'C room temperature. GPU is idling at 40'C with always on nVidia.

Gaming, depends on game... max I got is 104'C for CPU on BF3 and 68'C for GPU on Hitman Absolution.

QUOTE(username86 @ Feb 5 2013, 10:33 PM)
need advise from all sifu here. my friend buy this y580. when he play the battlefield 3. the graphic is not smooth & a bit lag. it is related to y580 over heating problem? or need to setting the laptop to play this game?
*
QUOTE(username86 @ Feb 5 2013, 11:17 PM)
already update the graphic driver. it is update the nvidia right?

one more thing. my friend try to play using battery without the power adapter, the game a bit lag. but when plug in the power adapter. the game back to normal. the fan also more speed. it is the setting must be configure?
rclxub.gif
*
QUOTE(mengfart @ Feb 5 2013, 11:21 PM)
If you're playing on battery it will definitely affect the gaming experience.
I'm not sure why but it will still lag even if you configure lenovo battery setting to Performance.

Just plug it in the adapter and play. =D

or take out the battery and plug in the adapter.

That's how i play. =D
*
I dont think the laptop can be used for long if you game on nVidia full performance... that's why you're given 170W brick...

QUOTE(Chaoyinside @ Feb 6 2013, 11:08 AM)
exactly what they had said at the above, u want gaming using lappy juz plug in the AC, Y580 itself using that much of power consuming component.

if u wish to play on battery, for sure it would not last long, perhaps u can try to adjust the nVidia panel force the system itself use the nVidia graphic card whenever it is possible, not sure it works or nt, juz my opinnion.
*
even if you force it on nVidia all the time, the performance is limited... the card is undervolt, underclocked I guess... I dont know if there's any way to force it to run it on full performance but I'm afraid your laptop doesn't want to stay alive coz not much juice...

reactivate windows require key? and no key given because already build in with win8..
anyone can confirm regarding this? I had just installed most of my software..I don't want it end up require 100 piece of dvd to backup..  doh.gif
*
there are a few ways to obtain the key... if you try google, I think you can find a few software that can retrieve the key for you... however, since it's win8 I can't say for certain it'll work as well...

but Win8 has its own recovery system already right? why don't you use that? you can find it by Charms Bar > Search > "recovery" > click settings > Remove Everything and Reinstall Windows.

QUOTE(kamikraze @ Feb 7 2013, 05:01 PM)
Win8 seems to be slower than Win7 for me due to I need to look around to use something that I used to know where it is before.
But from time to time most of the thing in Win8 pretty much easier. Thanks for that recovery heads up. If it's really do what it should there's no point to do ghost backup anymore as we can just do clean installation without it? maybe for the worst situation where BSOD or windows total crash there the use of ghost image.
*
yeah... win8 seems slower to everyone else actually because you don't know where it is located... but once you get used to it, that thing is pretty easy to handle... it's a new interface language after all... learning curve is pretty steep... rclxub.gif

I haven't venture into that area yet actually, but I do have an installation disc burnt after I download it before. The installation disc can be used for clean installation, doesn't really matter if it's upgrade version of retail... but in case of built in, I dont really know. However, if I'm not mistaken windows also allows you to create a recovery disk to be used in worst case scenario. maybe you can check it out as well...

Indeed, learning process turned pretty much slower as I need to use it for work too. and work don't require much knowledge about the os. As long as everything work fine that all. haha. before this I never thought that I will use win8, planning to skip direct to win9 haha. with win8 even my vpn didn't work correctly.

recovery thingy I will look on it later. thanks for heads up.

p/s : how to check if my RAM 1333 or 1600?
*
1st option, open up the panel and check the stickers on the stick.
2nd option, I usually used SIW (you can google and download is for free) for extensive system spec listing... or you also can use CPU-Z to check... though CPU-Z list the frequency as DRAM Frequency, not the data frequency, so you'll have to double the listed freq to get your DDR frequency. e.g 1333MHz DDR3 will have 667MHz DRAM Frequency.

QUOTE(totallagness @ Feb 8 2013, 08:59 AM)
What's the suitable temp the laptop supposed to be?

My Y580 idle at 56-60C

Gaming(Far Cry 3, C&C Kane's Wrath) hit 78C
*
I think your temperature is pretty high for idling. You sure your laptop is idling? or something is running in background... judging from gaming temperature of 78'C, something must be running in background if it can hold its temperature with FarCry3... with 78'C gaming temp, I think it's pretty cool environment already...

go to your nvidia control panel and set to prefer your nvidia card... unless your laptop isn't optimus enabled...

Just wondering, anyone else using the y580 here? My y580 is brand new and the temperature records at 50C when I'm not doing anything, goes up to 70C when I play games like assassins creed.

Is this normal?
*
70'C while gaming is already good... no worries... just check your background process, something could be running churning out the CPU causing the idle temp to rise... though I think that's good already...

hello everyone, im very tempted to get LENOVO IDEAPAD Y400, and can u please answer my noob question? icon_rolleyes.gif

1) can i upgrade to 1TB 7200RPM?
2) if only for surfing, how long the batttery will last?
3) it is too hot? cant change the inner cooling fan?
4) i heard that the gpu is underclocked, cannot play DOTA2/DEVIL MAY CRY/ NFS/RAGNAROK 2 smooth? pls answer, tq sifu biggrin.gif
warranty can extend to 3years?
*
1. you have the money, you have the deal... sure can upgrade...
2. I don't own Y400 myself, but on power saver profile I would expect 4 hours max.
3. Just look at it, it's a hot laptop... okay, it's not that hot... it's better than Y480/Y580... I dont think internal cooling fan can be changed... the most you can do is to ask them re-apply a better thermal paste...
4. IINM GT650M is an underclocked GTX660M (of course with a few unnecessary extra features disabled as well)... that's what they meant... I can confirmed DOTA 2 can be played smoothly on high settings, other games better turn down the resolution + details a little bit... oh wait, Y400 is not full HD, so there you go... pretty sure everything is smooth...
5. I dont know much about warranty extension, i think you can buy them if you wish...

i need help here. my lenovo y480 has a problem with charging. Here's the details :

1. i plugged in the adapter to laptop.
2 it was ok for 2-5 minutes.
3. then the power button and battery indicator on the laptop keep blinking.
4. it was discharged.
5. i had to unplug and plug again to charge, but then it happened again.

What could be the culprit? Thanks.
*
It looks to me like there's some faults in charging circuit or battery... get it checked at service center...

QUOTE(maggot05 @ Feb 9 2013, 06:52 PM)
hi guys.. finally bought the y580. had to get the bluray one cuz the other one cannot find stock anymore, tried lowyat plaza, forums and lelong. didnt want to spend that extra 500 bucks for bluray and 500gb hard disk space, but I had to. though It would have been useful to have that 500 bucks extra right now but I suppose thats spilt milk.

anyhoo,
now i want to upgrade to SSD
few question
1. im considering msata 120gb for primary boot OS drive
I know its sata 2 and not sata 3. but hey atleast I dont have to connect an external all the time.  is this a good idea? I know its not gonna be as fast as a sata 3 ssd .. but would it be fast enough to not feel like the computer is slow? what are the booting speeds of an msata data 2?

2. mushkin has a sata 3 msata available for almost 500rm. i think it would be worth it the y580 msata slot can detect data 3. anybody have any idea about this?

3. does anyone want to buy my 1 tb 2.5" HDD from the y580 for 200rm ? atleast this way I can afford a normal SSD.

4. now lets say I get my SSD. now what ? how to transfer my OS to the ssd? is msata capable of being the primary drive or will it end up being just a cache drive?

5. should i instal windows 7 home premium again and use the serial number at the bottom ? or do I need to clone my hard drive into the SSD or something ?

6. what kind of cooling base would you suggest? since on the bottom of the  y580 there are 2 vents at the back and 1 towards the front at odd locations

7. any other suggestions/hacks for y580 to maximize cooling and performance and life ?

mr.mrl I hope yr listening
*
is that my nick at the end? tongue.gif

1. Regarding the SSD upgrade, I haven't done any... nor I'm interested to do it so I have minimal knowledge in this... though, why not just buy a normal SATA3 SSD (i think that's cheaper than mSATA) and replace your HDD with that SSD. Now, you buy caddy for RM50 and slot in your HDD into your ODD bay... Sell your blu-ray drive since you dont really like it. that way you have extra storage as well... SATA2 SSD is still fast comparing to normal HDD... you'll feel the difference...

2. Any SATA2 can detect any SATA3 device without problem, but the speed will be at SATA2, not SATA3.

3. if I'm in Malaysia right now, I might...

4. I can't answer this question with 100% guaranteed to be true, though I heard that this is controlled by BIOS. Those with model that doesn't come with mSATA cache drive will only be able to be used as normal drive. So, I'm pretty sure you can use it as normal drive... so, hot to transfer the OS. If you're on Win7, I think you can just create a recovery image with the One-Click Recovery (did I get the name right?) and use it to load the OS with factory settings. Other than that, you can always install it again with the serial number at the bottom.

5. answered above I guess...

6. Most people use NotePal U3.

7. most people move the HDD to ODD bay using caddy to keep the HDD cool. other than that, not much i think...

QUOTE(arju @ Feb 9 2013, 07:13 PM)
just swap with msata y500 and migrate os to ssd using paragon, epic boot in 10second only smile.gif

Guys, my lenovo Y580 I just bought 2 weeks ago, have been giving me graphic problems. Can anyone help me? So far all the games I've been playing have texture tearing, green pixels, white flashing dots, sudden freezes and those kind of things. I've updated my driver to the latest. Is this a hardware problem?
*
Is it just happened? or since the day you bought it? I think, the better way is to send it to service center and repair it under warranty. otherwise, you can try to uninstall the driver (this is pretty important step) and clean install again the latest driver.
