Anyone feels that web browsing on Windows 8 will slow down every now and then? It's not constant though, if I load a page after not touching the browser for some time, it will load quite slowly. After that it will be fast again. However, the cycle repeats itself everytime I leave the browser not doing anything.

what browser are you using... I don't have any issue on Chrome...

QUOTE(maggot05 @ Jan 13 2013, 10:38 PM)
guys I have a few questions..

basically I am planning to get the y580 the full HD, DVD writer, 500gb HDD model cuz it starts at 2700

1... I want to upgrade ram to 16gb. its cost about 200rm to do that so its worth it I suppose. only problem is that now most of this model comes with windows 8. I dont want that. I want windows 7 and the problem with that is that this model comes with home basic whic is not compatible with 16gb ram. what do I do ? I do not want the i7 3610 model. do you know how I can get windows 7 premium, professional or ultimate ? is there any seller here who is actually doing that ?

2..  I also want to upgrade to SSD. either I get an msata and keep the HDD inside or I replace the HDD with a 2.5" SSD. msata does not seem to be a viable option at the moment as it is much more expensive perGB in malaysia and also the R/W speeds are much less compared to sata 3 SSD.
now I just want o know that when I do get one, how easy is it to transfer the OS to the SSD? is it a pain to do this ? can I do it by my self?
will that void my warranty? (though I dont think it should)

3.. current owners.. how do you find this machine ? is it worth the price?
I currently use a second generation i5 with 8gb ram. and I work on autodesk maya.. this is the only laptop I found in my budget that seemed like a worthwhile upgrade (on paper). how is it to use though?
I ask because once I make this choice I plan to be stuck with it for atleast the next 2-3 years. I dont wanna USE a PC for now
*
1. you can ask the shop first if they can do the upgrade to Win7 Home Premium or anything that you want... other than that, you can also by it seperately from other shop (pretty much most of computer shop sells OS as well) or else, you can check the Garage Sales.

2. Upon receiving your laptop, create an image using disk imaging software and you can restore it into your SSD later... totally doable on your own... though I'm not sure if it's possible to do it with supplied recovery software...

3. I'm using it, with 8GB RAM... I'm moving from a desktop with i7-2600K and GTX560... for me, this is a good replacement... not exactly an upgrade but a very good replacement.... having the same capability with very good pricetag... though, don't be surprise with the heat... it's a laptop, not a desktop... I can't ask anything more from this laptop with that price...

QUOTE(Fawkes @ Jan 14 2013, 01:49 AM)
I'm facing the same problem on all 3 browsers that I'm using, Firefox, Chrome and IE.
*
Open task manager and check your resource utilization... I assumed all are running on desktop, not metro...

QUOTE(maggot05 @ Jan 15 2013, 01:39 PM)
man now im so confused. y580 vs y500 vs y400

I guess the first main question would be GTX660M vs GT650M and I really dont understand all the jargon on the comparison sites. I guess in the real world, while actually playing games, does it make a somewhat significant difference?

thenext would definately be that I dont understand what this whole ultrabay thing does. from my understanding basically its a slot where you can replace the the DVD drive with a harddisk and case or another graphic card and case. I guess that would be useful if playing super high demanding games. but otherwise its useless. the reason this is confusing for me is that I dont play too many games. im not a gamer. but when I do play accidentally start of playing something, the whole world shuts down for like a week. last time I did that was 2 years ago. ive been on rehab ever since.

3rdly now a lot of sellers dont have the y580. and y500 is quite expensive i believe. does the price drop if I dont buy a nother graphics card and go for a simple DVD drive instead? the y480 is around the same price as the y580 non blu-ray. but some sellers say its 14 inch and some say its 15.6. im confused. also is it 1080p full HD? cuz im not sure.

other than these which is a better machine in terms of looks, build quality and structure and cooling etc ? I really have no idea about all this.

hoping to get some real world answers that a semi-nerd-semi-noob can understand
*
Y580 and Y500 is 15.6" screen laptop while Y480 and Y400 is 14" screen laptop. 14" screnn won't have 1080p full HD, but 15.6" screen can have that.

If you just play occasionally, I would recommend Y580 if you can find one... reason is simple, cheaper, more powerful single GPU... I believe you dont want to give yourself a headache with SLI config and stuff...

GT650M acting alone is not that powerful but good enough for occasional gaming... GTX660M will give some extra boost + TXAA... however, dual GT650M in Y500 is much much powerful if you really care about performance and quality but if you ask me, if you last play games heavily 2 years ago I am pretty much doubt that you're willing to spend time and money for SLI config... but if I'm wrong, I will greatly recommend you Y500 with dual GT650M.

now, Lenovo Malaysia doesn't really have a Y500 set that doesn't come with extra GT650M I believe... if you can find one, high likely it's imported set... and it's cheaper than dual GT650M config.

in terms of cooling, Y500 has better cooling design... Y580 is not that bad after you apply the workarounds...

Y500 disable the HD4000 and no optimus, prevent me from buy Y500.
Do Y500 able to keep in long run(3~5years) with NVIDEA on full time.

Do y580 really phase out recently? any rumor of Y580 sequel?
*
I didn't see this an issue at all... I config my Y580 to force run on nVidia all the time... the idle temp is more or less only 40'C... with games, never went beyond 65'C... I don't see any reason for it to be dead within 3 years other than defects and mishandling... though I would say 5 years is stretching it... I won't expect any of my devices running for 5 years nowadays... but if it does I'm happy...

Since Y500 has better cooling design, I won't see how it's going to be worse than my Y580...

to be honest, I'm more worried with my HD4000 to be dead first since core temp is quite high when gaming... at least for my unit (which I suspect has thermal paste issue...)

Btw I heard about a lot of overheating problems.

Solution: Switch HDD to SSD?

And anyone here tried playing Battlefield 3 on the Y580 here?

playing it just fine... though CPU temperature is a little bit worrying for me... though I believe it's my unit has some issue...

May I ask how is it playing? Multiplayer Armoured Kill maps getting good fps?(Since those maps are the biggest) and what settings you're on? :3
*
Been a while since I played.. i just run them on 720p, on medium IINM... that should maintain 60fps on any maps.... i usually played deathmatch, only few time on other maps but i'm pretty positive it's 60fps on that settings, any maps....

QUOTE(propf @ Jan 16 2013, 10:42 PM)
guys.
i have a question on my y480.

tried both windows 7 and windows 8 installed.
it happened that even in the idle state the temperature on win8 is roughly 60-70 degree C.
while on win7 its ranging from 30-50 degree C.

on some severe works using autocad12, cs6 and sketchup my laptop would shut itself.
even for both OS.
any of you guys using the same model as mine?
featuring the GT640M LE.
*
I would say there's cooling problem here...

you can try to do dust removal in the power management apps.

or you can send it to service center and get them clean and apply new thermal paste

Guys, I have been reading up a lot of bugs happening on this laptop(Y580), anyone got the graphics bug for a local machine(defective GPU)? Most of the bugs were reported by people who bought from Lenovo.com itself.
*
None I'm aware of.... I've been playing a lot of games, from Simcity 4 to Skyrim, no graphical bugs whatsoever...

I tend to say there're 3 cause if people are experiencing graphics bug, GPU defect, bad driver, or jack-sparrow games on Win8... most likely it's from the 2nd one, bad driver... jack-sparrow games usually will not even launch...

Did anyone use this http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm in their Y series laptop? I found out if i set my core clock and memory clock lower i will get a lower temperature in idle and web surfing.  drool.gif  Im using a y480 with win 7 home premium and with GT640M LE..
*
I love that apps when I was using desktop... the fan speed profiling is very useful to control the temperature... Last time my Asus graphic card has some weird fan speed profile in it so the temperature always more than 70'C when playing games, so I set my own profile my card never run more than 63'C... biggrin.gif

though, I dont see a use for this apps nowadays... i dont think it can control the laptop exhaust fan... or it can? I dont want to downclock, I dont see a reason for that at this moment... I'm happy with my laptop's GPU idling temp...

Im still confused between y500 and y580.
Any suggestion which is better? in terms of overall performance.
*
What's your priority, that's what you need to make sure first.

In order to achieve max performance, Y500 will need SLI... the performance is superb with the SLI, the drawback is the price tag and SLI config/support that might not be 100% compatible at the game launch, though I see that as thing in the past but some might still think twice. An update is highly recommended every time new driver is released if you go with SLI.

If budget is an issue, Y580 is a better choice for performance. GTX660M perform better than single GT650M.

If budget is not an issue, and you like the idea of SLI clearly Y500 is the winner here.

Guys, I was looking around for a laptop with 2 budgets

a) Below 2k (G480)

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2397675&hl=

b) Below 2.5k (Y480)

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2349017/all

This specs seems to be a little different from the one on the first page of this thread, any reasons why?

Will the 2.5k laptop have a lot of difference in terms of gaming performance compared with the 2k laptop?
*
Y480 you listed here is probably not intended for Malaysian market. You can buy, but you might have issue with warranty.

Performance comparison between G480 and Y480, I would say pretty big.... While gaming might still be able to be done with playable framerate, I would say just go for Y480. You'll get better quality graphics plus better framerate...

QUOTE(maggot05 @ Jan 20 2013, 07:51 AM)
thanks bro but I was actually leaning towards Y580 since the GTX660 card is what I prefer cuz I dont play too many games and the SLI y500 is too pricey as well. so in terms of y580 what do you suggest? also what is a cache drive ? would using the SSD as a cache drive be the same as using the SSD as primary boot drive with OS .. in terms of speed and performance of course. also If you were me and going for the y580 (though I do like the y500 design and weight) would go for mSATA+HDD or just a single SSD?
*
the existence of cache drive will speed up things a little bit, but will not have the same access speed through SSD...

the way it works is, computer will make a copy of things that is frequently accessed into the cache drive so that it doesn't have to go through slow painful process looking for stuff inside the HDD... so stuff that you frequently access will be available faster...

ah.. makes sense.. but i suppose that really wont be as fast as an SSD. in any case sorry for being a noob.. well we all start somewhere
*
yup, won't be as fast as real SSD as most data will still be pulled out from HDD... in some occasion, it will be faster, some will not...

no worry... we all start from knowing nothing... nobody born with great vast of knowledge right in their head... smile.gif

hmmm. cause currently im still out of budget to get a 2nd gpu, since a single gpu cost up to RM 2700 ( 16 gb ssd + blueray) , was planning to trade in the blue ray and top up for the 2nd gpu.
I heard US set , some are faulty unit?
*
my opinion, it's better to get Y580 if you can find one rather than getting Y500 US unit if you're tight on budget... it's not advisable to get US unit... you'll face problem if you ever need the warranty... and given the current circumstances, it seems to be you'll need the warranty...

if you still want the Y500, just grab Malaysian unit... spend extra for extra peace of mind...

DmC 5 graphic is too crazy!!!!
In Y480 it only can be in this setting:
High graphic quality+HD texture+HD AA
Other like v-sync, HD shadow and Ultra graphic quality can't be on, otherwise fps drop sharply
BTW this game is optimize for AMD graphic card
*
that's already good enough la...

hmmm... I see similar symptom with AMD optimized games now? Hitman Absolution have exactly the same thing on v-sync... turn on the v-sync, framerate drop rapidly... but without it, screen tearing is pretty unbearable...

Hi all, new y400 user here.
I tried to play need for speed most wanted, but it seems lag. Really lag, what should I do? What's you guys setting for this game? I choose from highest setting to medium but still lag. My specs is i7-3630qm, 8gb, gt650m

What should I do to make it smooth?

Ps: my most wanted is copy from my friend which is downloaded from Internet. Anything to do with this?
*
I would suspect the driver first... if you still using the stock driver just go to nvidia website and download the latest driver...

*
1. check you're on correct power profile + AC powered, not battery
2. check the game is running on which GPU (not sure Y400 is running on Optimus or not... is it?)
3. check driver version again, in case it got rolled back
4. check the temperature...

if all is ok, I'll suspect the game version...

Hi all sifu,

Actually I'm in delima to choose between Y500 and Y580.

I'm gonna use the laptop primary for work assignments ie. 3Ds Max, heavy photoshop, sketchup, autocad n 3d rendering.

So,  i want to ask which one is worth to buy. I know both of the model is awesome n both of the models are within my budget.

Thanks in advance.
*
If you can afford Y500 with SLI config, I dont see a reason why you want to go for Y580....
