Hi guys. Thanks for replying. i think i've found out the problem.

Apparently, the power adapter is the problem here. I noted that my power adapter output is 19V - 3.42A which is only HALF of the output supported by lenovo y480 ( 19V - 6.15A ) . This is why whenever i'm using power hunger apps such as photoshop or gaming; the laptop stop charging!

I plugged in my father's power adapter with output of 20V - 4.6 A and it works well, but the charging is still slow.

Well, can't complain much since i bought it second hand. Must be the seller also didn't notice the problem. Have to take alook at low yatt for a new power adapter then!

send rma. i think charger problem.. biggrin.gif
*
no need to send RMA... clearly it's not official charger... get back to your seller see if his willing to give you the original charger... or else, it's no use... and if you're willing to fork out some money, go grab the original charger at shop...

QUOTE(mrquidz @ Feb 10 2013, 10:43 AM)
let say i add 4gb 1333mhz to my stock 4gb 1600mhz, the speed will be throttled to 1333mhz right?  but the difference is not that significance?

any seller of good ram for my y480?  biggrin.gif
*
I'm worry more about BSOD later due to the throttling...

Hi I heard that the Y580 has flex issues with the keyboard and screen (ripple effects)? Is it true?

How do you guys rate the overall build quality (LCD especially)?
*
I dont have any issue on the screen, though you can feel it a little bit soft on keyboard.... but it's nothing serious... it won't break that easily...

except for the screen bezel... somehow the bezel deformed a little bit... must have been newly developed defect coz I didn't notice it before...

I see. Thanks.

I read that there is heat issues relating the Harddrive as it is sandwiched between the cpu and gpu (correct me if im wrong). Is it an issue?
*
it's not really an issue but merely a discomfort among us thinking the HDD is working at such high temperature... easily solved by moving the HDD to ODD if you have concerns...

QUOTE(vNirvana @ Feb 11 2013, 09:36 PM)
just want to double confirm, Y500 is without Full HD,

Y580 is with FULL HD right ?

QUOTE(vNirvana @ Feb 12 2013, 02:04 AM)
Seriously, 16gb ram for laptop is like overkill for me  ohmy.gif
*
actually its not overkill... when I was on my desktop, I can't seem to be able to fill up 8GB RAM so I assumed something similar on laptop as well... so I figured, well 8GB is enough for me... what happen is, on few occasions (which happens to me more often than not) the 8GB is filled to almost to the brim!!! and at one time, after I played games I checked the memory usage, it's almost 100% while gaming!!! so, I would say 16GB is not overkill and 8GB is just enough...

I do go around looking for the answer, one thing that I think that might cause this is that even though nVidia has dropped the name of TurboCache, I think the technology of using system memory for frame buffer is still present on laptop GPUs similar to AMD's HyperMemory... the difference is that AMD is honest about it telling their customer that the GPU does indeed equipped with the tech, but nVidia keep it quiet... I can't find it in any spec sheet... but the evidence seems to be pointing that they do have TurboCache in their GPU... though it's only my theory coz I can't find the definitive evidence on this (and I'm not bother to look deeper... tongue.gif) and my friend did mentioned the same thing as well...

another occasion that always hit high memory usage for me is whenever I'm downloading games from Steam... I dont know why Steam used so much memory while downloading and slowing my whole system down (though I would say the part to be blamed for the slow system is the HDD), but the memory usage can hit 90%...

so, unless you're using your laptop only for office stuff + surf the net I'm pretty sure you'll feel 8GB is just nice... anything less is unfavorable... luckily, it's easily upgradable...

1. Sorry for not understanding that well, so basically for the price of Rm3.8k, its includes the 2nd GC (if I choose so)?

2. For the red backlight, when I fully turn it off, is the red color completely gone? I thought the red color is painted on the sides of the keys.

3. If you do not mind me asking, I heard that sli dual GC causes fps stuttering when its below 30fps. Have you heard of it.

Thank you for clarification!  notworthy.gif Now i got headache to choose d  sweat.gif

if I'm not mistaken, malaysian unit only come with 2nd GC right? you can buy seperately if you want the other stuff...

Another question, will it effect anything on my laptop performance if I mix the ram as such :

1. Stock 4gb 1600mhz 1.35v
2. Kingston 4gb 1600mhz 1.5v

Thanks
*
Stock is 1.35V? I didn't know this...

anyway, it is said that DDR3L (1.35V) is backward compatible with DDR3 (1.5V)... So, if it's mixed DDR3L will run with 1.5V. I can't say for sure for this, maybe you want to refer to someone else as well... I might be wrong.

ok thanks. i'm not sure it's the stock either, but using cpu-z to check the manufacturer, the box is blank and part number is SHARETRONIC. no idea what it means.
anyway, the voltage stated is 1.28, not 1.35v ...
*
that's some ultra low voltage there... I checked mine both module is running at 1.5V... hmmm... hmm.gif

though, I just realized that my memory module is mixed... one is 1600MHz, one is 1333MHz... luckily it runs perfectly so that would mean the system can take 1600 + 1333...

when I'm about to purchase my Y400, I did ask the seller which 4GB Ram he will add to my lappy.
as expected he want to put 1333 one. I even showed him Y400 spec from google to prove him it's 1600 in the Y400.
finally he agreed to give me 4Gb 1600. Even it's different brand I think it's fine.
*
I dont bother to check that time coz I figured "A Lenovo tech guy should know their spec better than me"... well, can say it's my ignorance on that part when I know all along only 10% of tech guy in a computer shop really know about computer... shakehead.gif

luckily the system can accept the difference... well, I might just go buy pair 8GB 1600 when I'm back in Malaysia perhaps...

QUOTE(Chocobos @ Feb 15 2013, 07:19 PM)
Your laptop which is pre-installed with Windows should have the sticker, unless you bought dos version.
You should call Lenovo or the shop which you bought it from. Sometimes, there are shops who cheat their customers and take out the sticker.

Or if yours comes with Windows 8, try read this first cos Win8 doesn't use key anymore.
The license key is "stored" directly within Windows 8 compliant BIOS.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...69-2986e5f33fc4

For backup, I choose create recovery disc using factory image. I only need 3 dvd discs.
If you choose current image, then I think it will backup all your files too, that's why it's huge.
The backup can be used since Lenovo stored it in a hidden partition. Don't delete the partition if you wanna keep it.
That is why I suggest look for step by step guide for your particular model before you reformat it.
*
I think the OKR on Win8 doesn't have the creation of factory image... only current image I think... Ive heard this multiple times as well...

I've been using Windows 8 since I bought my y500...Have any of you guys experienced the app/s crashing in metro tile?
Mine keep on crashing but not all of them...
Is there any solutions?
*
My "Games" metro apps always crash, like 95% of the time... though I dont bother to find the reason why coz it's not critical for me... I barely on metro nowadays other than getting my apps list... but I believe it happens after certain update... coz I dont experience any crash when I first install win8...

QUOTE(kamikraze @ Feb 15 2013, 10:18 PM)

*
Nope, Y500/Y400 got the official caddy for UltraBay... Y580/Y480 can use any third party caddy available on the market...

QUOTE(maggot05 @ Feb 15 2013, 11:06 PM)
cuz unlike phones PC softwares are not bloat ware cuz they dont run on their own or take up memory.
*
while I agree I find that the Lenovo apps are useful, but you might be wrong of them "not running on their own" or "take up memory"... they do take up memory, just it doesn't take a lot... and some people actually bothered with the boot time caused by them...

Anyway, if you want to download them you can always go to the website and download the utilities... it's available.

If that's the case, then too bad if we forget to create our backup before installing anything
Not gonna waste lots of dvd discs just to create current image backup shakehead.gif
*
I think the reason Lenovo goes that way for their OKR is because of built-in Win8 recovery already provide the "Reset to Factory" though I think that could mean you lost temporarily all the Lenovo apps until you download and install them again...

QUOTE(kamikraze @ Feb 16 2013, 09:01 AM)
nah you don't need to buy new ram, just go to the shop you purchased and claim the right ram.
sometimes the shop really believe it's 1333 instead of 1600 and didn't mean to cheat.
by the way a pair of 8gb is 16gb ram..wow..what you wanna do with it?
*
Go to the shop and claim back, that would mean I'm still stuck with 8GB then... Well, with Steam downloading games consuming 90% of the memory, I dont really feel like it... it's like, "not future proof"... tongue.gif

I do write about how laptop's RAM usage is different from desktop in last few post (i think it's last page) and that's the reason I dont like the idea of 8GB on laptop... it is just enough for me... plus, I tend to multitask a lot... Chrome with multiple tabs is always open, media player in the background, and then gaming as well, I tend to use a lot of memory in one session... tongue.gif

some will think 16GB is overkill, for me it's not... nod.gif

now I remembered I have hundreds RAW image need to be processed as well... sweat.gif

QUOTE(mengfart @ Feb 16 2013, 09:58 AM)
well mine comes with a 1600 .. 8Gb ram is considered enough for me lol.

but i do suffers from lag when i'm running high on the hard drive like when im installing / copy paste large files etc etc. is that normal ?
*
If you're using 5400 rpm mechanical HDD, i think that's normal... I do experience that when download speed reached >1.5MB/s (sometimes, I think my download speed is capped because of HDD sweat.gif )

but if you're using SSD, maybe you want to check what's using the disk too much...

Maybe I miss that post. Honestly I think my desktop Dual Core+HD4850+2GB DDR2 Ram is a lot faster that this laptop.
I know I can't compare them but somehow the feeling should not be this far because I am using same application just like I used on my desk.
*
before I own this laptop, I thought the performance is comparable... heck, even the benchmark score only differ somewhere around 200points in 3dMark11 compare to my previous desktop (Core i7-2600K SandyBridge, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, GTX550Ti). I can't seem to be able to run it on the extremities, the worst I squeeze the juice is when I do video encoding (which I didn't do a lot), photo conversion (from RAW to JPG) and gaming (well, only the graphic is squeezed though)... I can't get a lag with that system...

on this laptop, Steam download is good enough to send me to my TV while waiting for the game to install laugh.gif

but still this is a great laptop... will I get another Lenovo's performance line up in the future? sure I am...

From my experience on both OS, if you find win7 is faster it just means win7 is easier to navigate. Though I guess that's the whole story of an OS...

EDITS: One other thing I remembered, the temperatures increase real fast when gaming, my left hand was hurting from the heat coming from the left side of the keyboard, was playing Dota 2 during that time, so I had to have my hand on the keyboard. If only the heat was coming from the right side of the keyboard instead, then it wouldn't be that bad as I don't have my hand over there.
*
At first i played on this setup as well and no need to say much, it is very uncomfortable for hand to withstand that heat especially for someone that comes from desktop scene... i will recommend external keyboard if you game for long time... i myself pick up nostromo in the end to avoid the heat...

*
I would say check for a sealed box.

but if you still want to check, compare the spec against the official spec from lenovo website (I think we have it at the front page?) or from the box and you can use Device Manager to check the hardware and compare it...

how? ><

regarding this, I would say no one will recommend you to upgrade... even I as win8 user will have a hard time to recommend you the upgrade...

not because it's bad... but it takes some time to get used to the new interface... some people can't even get used to it and stop using it...

the best recommendation is, find some way to use it without activating it (i think release preview is still valid...) and try it yourself... if you don't like it, you can revert back without wasting hundreds... mind you that Win8 Pro upgrade version is super expensive now...

I think I got a little mix up here... sorry for confusion...

you'll have to buy a Win7 laptop by 31st Jan 2013 to get RM50 Win8 upgrade...

And after you buy the laptop, you have to buy upgrade by 28th Feb 2013... so, yeah... you're right... it's until 28th... no extra fee needed (guaranteed if you register for the upgrade on your own... shop might take fee, I dont know... maybe, maybe not... but they should not...)

QUOTE(totallagness @ Feb 19 2013, 09:40 AM)
Cool, was planning to get a Nostromo but then I worry about the setup. I use legacy keys on Dota 2 for a reason. MIGHT get the Nostromo if I ever get to try it out, sadly I have yet to see a single shop demo-ing any Razer products. Except for Blitzone using Abyssus.
*
for Dota 2, I dont know if Nostromo is suitable... it can be if you're willing to spend some time configuring the Nostromo to your liking... the lack of keys is what makes it a little bit painful in competitive and fast pace games, I guess... Logitech keypad has more keys but it's use more or less the same with Nostromo...

if configuring, testing and getting used to new config is not your thing, I'd say stay away from keypads and get full keyboard instead... having an x-input compatible gamepads (xbox360 gamepad for windows) is the more reason to stay away from Nostromo as it has some driver conflicts against few numbers of games... plus the latest driver isn't compatible with Windows 8 that you'll need an older driver to run it on Win8 and I dont think Razer is going to release a Windows 8 compatible driver ever given their reputation with softwares and the newly release Orbweaver....

so, if you still want a keypad get the latest Orbweaver (which is uber expensive) or get the logitech's keypad (i dont know if it's still in the market)... else, go for full keyboard... that's my suggestion...
