Ok,

Penang Kia reporting -

I am subject to convenience n to me driving [in most instances, it includes being stuck in traffic jams as well] is not what I will include for my leisure R & R - thus I only go to the nearest cinemas near my home so -

TGV Paragon - is brand new- so spanking new , u can tell via its images - has IMAX [ only one in Pg at d moment ]

GSC Gurney Plaza - is getting old - Saw de Giver here n was really surprised tat images were dull n blurry [ hardly any contrast ] - even thou it was played in the smaller halls, does not warrant sub standard equipment to play it

Which is better is a given as de newer equipment always spell greater images..

BTW - wanna ask Imax patronizers - how many speakers do u see in ur local Imax theaters? Here in Pg [TGV Paragon] de Imax halls has 1 big ass speakers at each corner at the back - no side speakers visible [ like de normal cinema halls ] Sound still comes from de front - [ cant really see as its behind de screen ] LCR is my assumption here..

Cheers

I think it comes down to which surrounding you prefer. In my opinion, both the theaters are equally good.

TGV 1 UTAMA

+ IMAX
+ Dark/classy look
+ Dolby 7.1 sound. Sound seems to be sharper for me. Bass above average
+ F&B...For me TGV leads the popcorn race smile.gif
+ New

- Standard seats are too upfront and close to screen. Neck pain lo
- Seats not my liking
- expensive premium tickets

GSC 1 UTAMA

+ Dolby Atmos (hall 3) and THX (hall 2/3)
+ Better normal 3D halls ( love the new design of 3D glasses. Easier for people with specs to wear)
+ family-friendly feeling
+ For now still not overpriced
+ Good seating comfort and seat arrangement
+ Better bass

- It's getting old?? I dont know. For now no drawbacks. Wish they renovate soon with the way they did with GSC MidValley

Haven't been to Paragon yet but I agree Gurney is getting old. I recall seeing those two big-ass speakers at the back of IMAX hall. Not sure about the sides. Will check next time icon_rolleyes.gif

Been to premium at MidValley.. iIIRC seats were like Rm70 or something. Someone shows you to your seat, and brings your food and drink to you later. Blankets if it gets too cold.

Hahaha, I think he meant the cinema named "Premium X Cinemas" in One City USJ. It's an independent operator and not affiliated to any of the big four (GSC, TGV, MBO, Cathay)! laugh.gif

And as for best cinema hall, my favorite are these few:
- Luxe Hall, TGV 1 Utama (cosy and comfy cinema with great sound system)
- Gold Class, Signatures at Mid Valley Gardens (now that's the definition of a really luxurious cinema!)
- The THX hall in GSC Mid Valley - just watched "The Good Dinosaur" there yesterday! (stadium seats give a great view of the screen at the top and middle - too bad about those in front - as well as that wonderful surround sound throughout the hall)
- TGV Bukit Raja, although I hardly ever go to Klang nowadays, haha! (that was a revolution in cinema-going, back in the 90s - it was also the first multiplex with sloping stadium seats, more so than the original 1 Utama halls!)

seat kinda big & cozy for me. poor maintenance dow, some seat are busted. need to report then only they fix it. I kena twice at same seat doh.gif forgot which hall but is back row near the doors.
just viewing angle sucks. from front to back only got slight elevation. all halls are the same size I think. can't comment on sound, I ain't audiophile

reason why I like going to X Cinemas coz it damn close to my place. 10-15 min drive & its less crowded. only worth if ur movie junkie & don't like wasting time on the road

Thanks for the review man. I'm not the type who likes to go to a quiet cinema. For me the more the merrier rclxms.gif but make sure buy ticket siap siap..hehe

Update on other cinemas...

> GSC Nu Sentral, KL. Hall 11 is huge. The biggest hall in that cinema. Large screen, loud sound, high bass. Usually screens Tamil films. Went in there twice and both the time the A/C was not working properly. Hope they have fixed it by now.

> GSC Aman Central, Alor Setar. Medium to small sized halls here mostly. Not the biggest ATMOS hall but sound system was good. Watched Spectre here in the ATMOS hall but the film didn't utilize the surround option. I guess Spectre had no ATMOS mixing done or maybe it's not brought in here to our country.

The dedicated ATMOS hall same like any other ATMOS. They tend to give the same quality in every cinema like IMAX despite various sizes of halls. But the experience depends on the movie itself on how well the film equipped and mixed the sound for it. Went to watch Spy @ Atmos GSC Quill City. The sound was crappy. So yeah, depends on the movie in the end. But with just an extra RM1 from normal cinema hall, why not go for it right?

> MBO Central Square, Sg Petani. Only went here once and got into Hall 8. I was surpised on how good it was. The hall size was almost alike with those THX halls in 1U/Pavillion. Seats were bit too hard for me but the cinema was new. Did they renovate this place or is it a new cinema in SP? Cz if you're staying in SP I would recommend this place over GSC Amanjaya thumbup.gif
