QUOTE(rideverest @ Apr 15 2017, 10:10 AM) Hey guys, movie buffs, cinema lovers, etc, big news! The new MBO Starling's big screen is super awesome. Its the best non-IMAX/normal hall in Malaysia, hands down. Pricing at RM21-22, it has super screen clarity, powerful bass, comfortable VIP seats with headrests, huge screen and good surround (Dolby Atmos). The only downfall is, the aspect ratio of films does not utilize the full screen. Quite a portion of the top and bottom part of the screen is blank! I hope MBO can rectify it by getting a different format reel for their big screen. They also have MX4D, Kecil and Premier halls. Hoping for someone to review it. No time and money to check them out yet Is the screen bigger than GSCmaxx at Times Square? I remember it was huge. Watched Fast8 in the MX4D hall and it was kinda fun and something that you should try at least once. Besides the rumbling seats you get to smell burning tires, see some smoke, flashing when gunshots are fired, feeling bullets narrowly miss your ear, and have a bit of water sprayed at you.

MBO claim its the biggest screen in Malaysia. I watched Fast8 in BigScreen. In my opinion, they were somewhat the same. GSC Maxx fails at many points. The projector used is somewhat old. The color isnt as vivid and bright as BigScreen and the sound quality lacks a bit. GSC Maxx doesn't have that boomy bass and super surround as BigScreen. Seats in BigScreen has better comfort and lots of legroom. Hoping to get more reviews on MBO BigScreen. My last movie on GSC Maxx was The Force Awakens. Will have a go there again. Love your description on MX4D. I wanna go too

The 'true' biggest GSCMaxx screen is located at Times Square as the hall previously build for full spec IMAX hall . Now the largest IMAX hall if not mistaken is located at Sunway Velocity Mall but the seating is screw up All the middle seat is reserve for dining seat while other 'preferred' seat is located side way Me yet to try MBO Big Screen (which they claim one of the biggest screen in Malaysia) MX4D is worth to try @ RM23 only

Another reason to love this hall is cz the VIP seats has headrests, which is such a plus for tall people like me. I went to the true GSC Maxx in BTS. Only the size of the screen is big and everything else is not up to par. Don't you find the seats to be too much for a row? You'll have to go through like 50 people if you're sitting at the end of the row to the washroom, with everyone staring at you! It's just a bummer for me. Haven't try IMAX Sunway Velocity. Dining area? Is it the indulge seats or something? Must be a huge bummer to lose the best seats in a cinema, especially for IMAX

GSC just opened their new cinema at MyTown in Cheras and they're claiming that their GSCmaxx has the biggest screen in Malaysia. Just a few months after MBO claimed theirs is the biggest.

I'm thinking of the best way possible to watch Dunkirk which I believe is IMAX 70mm. Where should I go for that? I usually just go to standard screen cinemas.

Definitely should go for IMAX for that but I'm not sure if its 70mm though. Sunway Velocity has the biggest IMAX screen here so you might wanna check that out.

Its screen and hall is quite huge and big. Now already migrate back to Perak no more IMAX for me But recently (a few months back, during GOTG2) I went back to JB because got some errand plus want to see GOTG2 at IMAX theater there, but discovered from internet that said the one in Velocity Mall is currently the biggest screen in Malaysia. So I change plan and went to watch it at Velocity on the way back, but somehow I felt the screen is smaller than what I used to in JB and felt regret not watching it there instead. Anybody here can clarify which theater has the biggest screen? Is my hunch is correct or is just my feeling. Tried googled for technical details to no avail.

Did a quick check,
Apparently gsc max atmos at mytown (hall 3) and mbo big screen at Starling have almost the same screen size (20 metres x 11 metres). Note that the screen size means that to enjoy the largest screen possible, the movie needs to be in 1:1.85 aspect ratio, which is a problem because most modern blockbusters are 1:2.35 in aspect ratio (ghost in the shell is the only recent blockbuster movie I can think of that is in 1:1.85). This means most of the movie you watch in these big halls, the top and bottom of the screen is not fully utilize. The only other upcoming blockbuster I think that is projected in 1:1.85 is justice league (based on the trailer). Both MBO and GET use Dolby Atmos, and based on memory alone, the sound system is Imax hall is way better. Picture quality wise I don't think there's much difference (not sure if there's any discernible picture quality for movie that are shot using Imax cameras).
Lastly, I Have no idea what is the screen size of TGV velocity Imax size (it boasts that it has the largest Imax hall in malaysia, not cinema hall so I'm pretty sure it's at least relatively smaller than GSC mad almos and mbo big screen). But pretty sure for pure moviegoing quality, Imax is still better (but for us layman viewer, we might not notice any difference). The offset is of course the pricing. IMAX is generally priced around rm 5 more expensive than their GSC and MBO counterparts.

QUOTE(hakimix @ Jul 6 2017, 09:58 PM) I'm thinking of the best way possible to watch Dunkirk which I believe is IMAX 70mm. Where should I go for that? I usually just go to standard screen cinemas. 70mm IMAX is gonna be extinct soon. We had one in Malaysia BTS, our first IMAX which was closed down. The reason why it closed down is the same reason why 70mm IMAX is no longer an option. Why? 1. Not many movies are being shot in its true large format/aspect ratio 2. Too expensive (high cost of projection) 3. Thus less profit 4. Needs such a huge space to build the cinema hall (heavy renovation) Therefore, IMAX is shifting to Digital IMAX screens, famously known as LieMAX. Smaller screens than 70mm but somewhat trying to give a same experience. But even the smaller IMAX screens are bigger than normal cinemas!!!
