Just found this thread, didnt know so many sifu here!

Managed to snatch 2 IMAX tickets for Fantastic 4, heard that the first trailer for Avatar Fire and Ash will be played before F4.

GSC is quicker to release all showtime on 23 July midnight, TGV damn slow so I bought the GSC IOI City one, only to find out there have 6 channels of speaker(?) Last time i went there it was for Avatar 2 the way of water, and I was blown by laser projection

I would have gone with TGV Velocity but the showtime is not out. The screen size there is absolutely massive and I always pick that one for event films. I watched Dunkirk there and I was fully immersed there.

I am thinking to get another tix for velocity.

Big Hollywood IMAX will be in dry spell till Mortal Kombat 2 in October😅😅

Haven't been here in a while and also haven't really watched movies in the cinema for a long time already. Nice to see I still recognise some familiar names here.

Kinda late for F1 but since friends ajak so I'll tag along and it seems like we're watching in 4DX. How's F1 in 4DX?

Doesn't seem like there's IMAX anymore 'cause there are movies like F4 and the upcoming Demon Slayer now.

I know my things with IMAX but no idea with 4DX since I've never tried it before.

Just bought tickets to catch Demon Slayer and this will be my first experience with GSC's BIG ATMOS hall at 1U. What are your experiences catching it at GSC BIG halls?

I read the description it is also using 4K Projector like IMAX Laser and it is comparable in terms of visual fidelity? I am sure the AQ should be good since it comes with ATMOS speakers throughout.

watched The Final Reckoning @ GSC Big Paradigm JB

Surprisingly i think it is tad better than Xenon IMAX, but Laser IMAX still has the plus points

How does 2 lasers allow for 1.43:1 ratio image to be projected? Does one laser show top ½ and the other bottom ½? Why cant single laser project this ratio?

Ive read its not about inability of single laser to project this taller ratio but doing so caused the image to be not bright. So 2 lasers mean the 2 images will be superimposed on top of one another thus creating brighter image. Based on my limited reading la.

Cany any film connoisseur explain why?

===

In other news, just bought DEMON SLAYER for IMAX at TGV Sunway Velocity! Will be my first experiencs for IMAX. Bought row G middle seats.

Kinda feels like you've already explained it yourself lol. I'm in the mood of IDK how the sausage is made, just want to have the taller aspect ratio that we are not getting likely cause of money + up cost reasons. On another note congrats on getting tickets fo your first IMAX viewing. Demon Slayer sold out quick but then again, anime in Malaysia and this series in particular is super popular here.

I think the movie aspect ratio should be 1.78:1 (16x9 actually hahaha, common tv and monitor aspect) like the previous films, so the image will be tall. Again, our IMAX halls can only display up to 1.9:1 so I'll assume yhr left and right side of the screen will be letterboxed (have minor blakl bars) for the image to fully fit. Anyway, I'm sure itnaill be an awesome experience for you at Velocity.

I've never tried 1U's Big hall, I think it recently opened there like a month ago. I may actually visit it for review hahaha. While you're there, you could do us a solid by taking and posting photos of the hall + screen here.

Anyway, Big halls use 4k laser projectors that displays clearer, brighter and higher detail images than traditional halls. Like it's name sake, you also get a bigger screen though the size varies in the different locations (Starling has the biggest Big screen that GSC offers, while Lalaport as far as I know is the smallest). The hall is also typically equipped with Dolby Atmos speakers, usually many of them which provides better audio quality and surround sound.

Tech wise, Big halls' image quality is slightly weaker than IMAX Laser. I would say it's slightly better than IMAX Xenon, but it's very hard to notice between these two. IMO they're not as bright vs IMAX Laser but they are still high definition and better than other large format halls. Dolby Atmos is definitely better than what IMAX can offer, 12 Channel/speakers or what not. DA halls have way more speakers than IMAX as it can go up to 64 in a hall, meaning more direction sounds can come from. My personal opinion too is that DA is comfortably loud whereas IMAX can be deafening at times depending on a film's audio mix.

I hope this answers your question and have a good time with the hall.

I kinda want to watch F1 in 4dx but kinda sian with the film since I watch it 4x in IMAX hahaha. It should be very fun since it's high octane, thus the seats will move more. That and the wind velocity etc to add in the mix.

I think it may get a few more IMAX slots on the 7th Aug to 13th, that week, since F1 returned to IMAX halls after a week of Superman. 7th Aug would be the 3rd week for Fantastic Four and it's losing steam right now in terms of ticket booking. I think IMAX Corp decides which films would return to the halls than TGV/GSC, and considering how popular F1 is even now, it could return.

Otherwise, bro, it's a film by the Top Gun Maverick director and 4dx with that film was top tier (I watched top gun in 4dx back in 2022, shit was fire). This film is also fantastic action/racing wise, I'm sure it will be a blast.

Thanks for the great information, buddy! Sure, I do hope I remember to take pics of the hall + screen when I go there next month. Yes, so far I have only visited the newly renovated 1U GSC once but it's just the normal 2D ATMOS hall and the SQ was great. I agree wholeheartedly that the IMAX SQ can be a bit too loud and deafening.

My last IMAX visit was at Central I-City for F4 and the image quality was dissapointing. It's blurry... 🤣 And for the price paid, not worth it. Since GSC BIG ATMOS is a lot cheaper even without the discounts, the more I am looking forward to it. Can't remember the last time I caught a movie in IMAX laser, need to experience it once again soon.

Damn, 4x in IMAX! The most times I watched the same film in IMAX was Oppenheimer which was 3 times I think.

Welp, time to see how F1 is like in 4DX. Very curious.

wink.gif Nah but for real, in a span of 6 weeks, we had 3 big blockbusters all competiting for premium halls. I'm sure IMAX Corp, studios and the distributors discussed about allocating slots. I searched online on IMAX's website and they had F1 listed for 7th Aug onwards in the USA. TGV/GSC and the cinema chains worldwide I think don't have much say to which film gets IMAX slots. If IMAX Corp say this film, then that film gets the slot. I mean, demand also plays a big part la, so F1 definitely has high demand, so get the tickets in the week while you can.

Maybe. It could comeback. All 3 blockbusters of F1, Superman and Fantastic 4 could get equal IMAX slots, just gotta wait for announcement. I did watch Superman in BIG DA and it's good. TLDR the film has tall aspect ratio in all halls since it's actually 1.85:1. You'll notice minor letterboxes on the left and right side of the film instead of the usual top and bottom.

Agreed. I really really want a new IMAX hall with a big screen, especially with dual laser. I honestly wouldn't mind going back and forth with Velocity and I-City's IMAX but at last, distant is a problem. However what new mall wanna open with IMAX hall planned hahaha. Malaysia already have so many malls and many are dead.

So I watched F1 in 4DX at LaLaport.

Honestly, it's really fitting for the film. Since I hadn't tried 4DX before, I wasn't used to it at first and sometimes it took me out of the movie with all the seat movements.

But as time went on, I got accustomed to it and was immersed in the film. The 4DX effects are mostly fine. I just find the water spraying effect to be a bit strange and not so fitting for the film.

I think 4DX is a very specific type of cinema experience that's not suitable for many films. But it's made for films like F1. I can recommend it. Not sure if there are different 4DX experiences for different cinemas since I've only tried the one at LaLaport.

Now I'm curious how Ford v Ferrari would've been like in 4DX since I really enjoyed that one even in a standard cinema.

So I watched FF4 on imax and Superman on regular cinema on the same day. From the trailers was expecting to like FF4 and not like Superman (I mean c'mon superdog??) But it turned out to be the other way around lol. FF4 was... ummmmm.. underwhelming and Superman was surprisingly enjoyable hahaaaaa..

As a general rule of thumb, you should only watch IMAX movies that were shot with IMAX cameras.

Yeah, personally speaking, I don't see a real benefit to watching anime films in IMAX. Aspect ratio is the same and sound mixing is also the same as far as I know.

It's an animated film; this kind of films generally have no major difference in IMAX. Some animated films might have IMAX 6-track sound mixing but it's not necessarily better than other formats. Like Transformers One was available in IMAX last year, but was it worth it? I don't think so.

Films that are shot with IMAX cameras definitely should be watched in IMAX in my opinion. For films that are not, it really depends on what real benefit and different experiences it can offer for the respective film. My last IMAX experience was Alien: Romulus from last year and even though it's not shot in IMAX cameras, it offers a great IMAX experience with its aspect ratio and sound mixing.

Demon Slayer? Nah.

Thanks for the replies, in the end I chose going for Onyx ATMOS at IOI Mall Damansara's GSC instead of IMAX (not like there is any IMAXs with vacant seats, all booked out for next few days everywhere!). Still had a damn good time even when it's not IMAX, and the Onyx LED screen was a damn treat with gorgeous animations!
