hi, once i saw a member talked about using the blue tong to diy as canister filter.
I think it might work in your case.
Or u try drill holes like discus tank, then with a flick of your fingers, it wc.
Once from you-tube, i saw a farm just turn on the knob and water gushing out from below. Then another water source gushing in from top.
It took only minutes.  flex.gif

Yup, I remember that blue tong canister filter. Problem is, it's huge and quite unsightly.

I thought I'd get a 4ft x 2ft fibre glass tank (that comes with the top filtration) and DIY it to become a sump tank...somehow. Need to do more reading up first.

I'll check out youtube too.

I'll suggest you diy the sump if you got the knowledge and patient. i also lazy wanna change water actually. I'll show you mine mini aquaphonic system.  brows.gif so far no problem..water clean as usual....sorry cos i didn't snap the the blue tank size around 2 1/2 feet x 1 feet only.  laugh.gif

Is sump still the most effective form of filtering? And that aquaphonics is a great idea! Does the water flow back directly into the main tank, or it is filtered somemore? Also, does the tank recieve direct sunlight (for the plants to grow)?

Bros and sis,

Wana ask ya, If we have a SUMP we no need to change water or wash the filter inside for years to come?

IS that true. Since somebody asking bout it too~

Thanks for your input.

I have a 4ft tank with a 2ft sump. I clean out the filter almost every 3 weeks. So far, I haven't changed the water in 3 months. Still clean. I guess it depends on the amount of waste the fish can produce. Once I see the filter media starting to look mucky, I wash it.

Out of topic, what is the best feeder to bulk up carnivorous fish? My aba-aba doesn't seem to be growing (or maybe it's growing reaaaaaly slowly). I'm feeding it catfish almost every day, and just recently, frogs.

Make sure the tank runs earlier before fish arrival. Read up 'aquarium cycle process' to prevent New Tank Syndrome. Just arrived home last nite from 2 days outstation, found out my monsters already finished ALL feeder fishes. They looked hungry and energetic. Aragorn grabs 6 crickets rightaway!

Yeah, i think they like the taste very much. Just house (and gutload) them properly before feeding time.

that also depends bro. there are no such things that sump no need to change waters or any other materials unless you're talking about multiples sump than that the only way you'll not need to change water whole years. Take it examples for the water treatment for INDAH water and looks how they do the water treatment... laugh.gif

If i were you i'll still suggest you goes for Aquaphonic + sump filteration that the only way for you to make the water filteration + good aeration + fish healthy + get own crops. I've already tested using aquaphonic concepts so far no problems. now I'm thinking to do the sump as well using the current sump which i diy my own using the big tong sampah (black color) still in progress actually. Yes with aquaphonic you can either used lighting or direct from sun also can used. For your knowledge aquaphonic is the best options for you already if you want to save money for water bills and sponge if you're not using any sump filteration and keep on changing water regularly. Now I'm in the 2nd stage for the aquaphonic concepts which also i'm doin using the bigger tank (3 tanks totally) and i belip that it can success. All this i do is in house which is using light which is at my kampung so is not secure for me to do outdoor unless i migrates at my kampung itself. I'll show you my 2nd stage of aquaphonic when i go back to my kampung. but make sure you feed the fish la. budget wise for aquaphonic is depends on your setup and materials for aquaphonic. All i do is diy my own. total cost for me is almost 300 +/- only which is only for 3 tanks (blue - 2 feet x 1 feet = 4 unit 2nd hand cos around 100, pvc pipes and materials, steel bar (i dunno what is the name but i know i buy around 10 pcs x 10 feet at hardware shop), clay pebbles at nursery can buy and best options is larva rocks at fish shop which is cheap. laugh.gif

i dont know bout the washing part. But i do know the inlet and the sponge will get
very clogged. And need to be wash with aquarium water.
What i fear most is the water is not cycled well then the poop poop smell will be overwhelming.
Thus giving us the " cancerous" air

Antzz, quick question. How big were aragorn n frankieII when u comm them? Did they readily accept each other without fight? Might consider another tank in future and considering aro. Also which aro is suitable for predator community tank..

I just bought Aragorn and Frankie II on Sept 2012, Aragorn at about 12" and Frankie about 13". No aggression between them so far. But at first, they were housed in more natural setup. That helps very much to cool Frankie down, i think. Here's the pic.

About which types most suitable for comm'ing.. well, honestly i dont think i know much about each of aros attitude. So far i'm very happy with my current tank comm members, which doesnt cause me trouble almost at all. What i always do, is pour 20-30 feeder fishes every few days, and just let them be. All 3 of the predators will not waste their feeders by hunting sports. But if i put too small fishes, a few will stuck in filter at night.

Aragorn feed on superworms and crickets, which also loved by the polyps. If i dont come home for outstation (once or twice a week), i just ask wifey to feed the feeder fishes with small pellets (cuz she scared to hold SW and crickets) laugh.gif and the 3 predators just feed on the feeders. If i dont come home for 2 days, and the feeders all gone, can see them hungry and active. Thats when they can finish about 30 feeders in a single night!

Bro Jay, i just feed the SW with bread and little vege, cuz vege will get rotten and stinks pretty fast. If any dies (which is quite rare now), i just feed it to my turtle. He also loves SW, be it dead or alive biggrin.gif
