Hi everyone,
I'm struggling on choosing which laptop to buy, so hope everyone can give me some suggestion

1. Preferred Brand: None
2. Budget: 3 to 4k
3. Usage: Multimedia, using heavy software like autodesk maya, 3ds max and z brush, adobe also, and must be able to play some graphic game in middle setting.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 15.6''
Specs Preferred:
15.6' FHD display (matte surface preferred)
3rd Gen Intel Core I7
8GB DDR3 Ram
750GB to 1TB HDD (with a little SSD will also come in handy)
Nvidia Graphic Card 2GB (either GT650M or GTX660M is fine)(GDDR3 or 5 is fine, but prefer 5 la)
and not to mention, as lighweight as possible.

After i did some research, i found out that these 3 machine more or less suits my preference,
Asus N56vz (Highest Spec Available in MY)
-4GB ram, need to add 4 more myself but sound is good, and the design is the best among my 3 choices (I think la... and the screen is gloss or matte?)

Lenovo Ideapad Y580 (Highest Spec Available in MY)
-Heaviest and not so attracting design (no offence)notworthy.gif but cheapest among the 3, is the cooling good?

Msi GE60 OND (Highest Spec Available in MY)
-most ideal among the 3, with all specs i preferred, and lightest too... but not too like the design, and how is msi's after sale services and warranty?

so which one would you guys prefer or any other laptop suggestion? ( maybe i missed out some godlike machine with price of Y580, Design of N56vz, and Spec of GE60?)

You did not miss much laugh.gif
Asus
N56VZ-S4284H, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1920x1080) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 1TB, W8; color: black (screen is matte)
G55VW-S1216H, i7-3610QM +Nvidia GTX660M (2GB) + (1920x1080)@3999[3.78kg], 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8 (a gaming laptop, good build quality, but very heavy)

Lenovo Y580 is glossy screen.

MSI
GE60, i7-3610QM + Nvidia GTX660M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + Bluray@RM4199, 8GB, 1TB(7200rpm), W7HP, 2 years warranty, gaming mouse & backpack, Free SteelSeries QCK Mass mousepad (Nope, I don't think this is lighter than N56VZ. It's skinny, and tend to heat up under load)

If you really want 15" FHD matte screen, within your budget, there are 2 more choices. But they are considered "ugly" by most laugh.gif
Dell
Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB,backlit keyboard optional, W7HP/W8
Vostro 3560, i7-3632QM + AMD HD7670M + 32GB SSD + 750GB(7200rpm) HDD + (1920x1080)@RM3209[2.57kg], 8GB, W7HB; colors: red/silver/bronze

Oh ya.. The PC store managed to call them d... So I could buy them through the PC store...

Good for you smile.gif Well, my preference is with RS-17 then, since with your budget, you could pretty much max out the specs. But no bling bling laugh.gif

For your friend, there is only 1, the legend "wait for it" ery:

hi guys.
it has been a long time i use my old laptop and never got replace.
i am looking for nice laptop as below:

1. Preferred Brand: anything will do except Lenovo since its bulky
2. Budget: Range RM2k - RM2.5k
3. Usage: mild gaming, entertainment, watching movies, mild engineering works
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 12" - 14"
5. Others: backlit keyboard, dont want Intel graphic, preferably less hot graphic card  tongue.gif
*
Lenovo has some slim laptop now like S series, U series smile.gif
Intel HD4000 is the least "hot" IGPU (most energy efficient). Any discrete graphic card from Nvidia / AMD is going to run "hotter".
Engineering work? What type of software? Do they require some 3D graphic rendering? If yes, you need slightly powerful GPU.
Is minimum downtime important for you? (work involved) Or you have other machine that you can fall back on? Some brand offer next business day on site warranty service (Dell, Lenovo)

Asus
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8
K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD

Dell
Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8
Inspiron 14z, i5-3317U + AMD HD7570M + 32GB SSD + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2449[1.87kg], 4GB, W8 *no VGA port, OD

HP

Toshiba
Satellite L840-1026X/XR/XW, i5-3210M + AMD HD7670M@RM2249[2.12kg], 4GB, 640GB, W7HP; colors: Black/Red/White, 3 years warranty

Lenovo
Ideapad G580, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM1699, 2GB, 500GB, freeDOS, 1 yr warranty
Ideapad Z580, i7-3612QM + Nvidia GT640M@RM2499, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), freeDOS, white
Ideapad Z580, i7-3612QM + Nvidia GT640M@RM2699, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB, white

Price is RSP, negotiable. Don't concern too much with HDD capacity and RAM, you can easily arrange with re-seller to upgrade them without voiding warranty, and they are cheap now (upgrade from 500G to 1TB ~ RM100, 4G RAM stick ~ RM80).

Powerful components generate lots of heat laugh.gif
Please get good external cooling solution.

Lenovo is quite popular now actually (They ship the most laptop globally, you know smile.gif ). Not all re-sellers who carry Lenovo are listed on Lenovo website. Just go to computer shops around your area to check them out.
Alternatively, you can check LYN garage sales forum for reputable re-sellers. Some of them could be around Perak, some of them actually do postage delivery.
Anyway, make sure you look at the real thing first.

Now need to see what specs the pc store give me first for the AW before I make any decisions. smile.gif cuz they gave me a price of RM9350 without any specs..

What TJ mean was "relatives" tend to grumble if the laptops we recommend become faulty tongue.gif
So always safer (for our own backside) to recommend brands that can offer 3 years next business day on site warranty service laugh.gif
And the XPS 13 we have in mind, your aunt will not be able to get 3 years warranty within her budget tongue.gif (~ RM3.7k, with standard 1 year warranty ~ RM3.3k), but it is a very good laptop smile.gif

haha SPOT ON! thats so true. sweat.gif yea the 3 years warranty is definitely a bonus. and i guess its better than getting an expensive one and then later anything happen she complain lousy etc doh.gif
anyway i'm definitely gonna check those two lappy up, thanks again. Cheers!

Hi, i have found few models and i would hope that sifus can suggest me which 1 is better. I also have some questions to ask hehe.

(Price and specs copied from another post in forum)
1. [Ultrabook] UX31A-R4005H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM3499[1.3kg], 4GB, W8
2. [Ultrabook] XPS13, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3299[1.36kg], 4GB, W8, backlit
3. [Ultrabook] Envy SpectreXT 13-2106TU, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3399[1.39kg], 4GB, W8,backlit keyboard
4. [Ultrabook] Vaio SVT13126CV, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3099[1.66kg], 4GB, W8; color: silver; Vaio carrying case
5. [Ultrabook]XPS 14, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT630M + 32GB mSATA+ 500GB(5400rpm) HDD + (1600x900)@RM3749[2.1kg], 4GB, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, W8

I'm going for uni so i hope to get something that is light and easy to bring around. Below are a few questions:

1. Does UX31A-R4005H comes with a IPS screen or its just a normal FHD screen? Because i have seen few people selling it and says that it is only normal FHD. Does it comes with backlit keyboard as well?

2. How much ram does i5-3317u support? Because when i see the specs it says something about 3GB cache memory and i dont know what does it means.

3. Is Sony VAIO good in terms of build quality and warranty? Because from what i see the pricing of Sony VAIO is getting cheaper compare to brands like ASUS.

4. Which of the top 5 models are recommended if i will only be using it for assignments and maybe some movie? Is there any other model of ultrabook recommended with about the same price range?

5. I actually considered MBA and MBP as well but im afraid that office files from other students cant be open at my mac. Will there be such problems?

1. Yes, it comes with backlit and keyboard and IPS screen. The UX31a offers one of the brightest screen in the market brows.gif

2. I think you should be more worried about how many RAM slots there are within an ultrabook since some only have one slot iinm... and some have their RAM soldered (thus irremovable) =.=

3. Sony is still relatively more premium compared to Asus I think? If spec- to spec hmm.gif

4. I would recommend the XPS 13, sturdy, solid, comfortable keyboard, and good warranty service (if covered). The Asus is good too if you don't mind the less ergonomic keyboard and of course, the bad after sales service

5. Yeah, there will be program and hardware incompatibility problems, unless if all your friends are using Macs...

Nvidia GT635M, Nvidia GT645M and Nvidia GT650M, do these three make a huge difference? Can I still play Fifa13 on high settings or any other games which requires high settings?

Nvidia GT635M, Nvidia GT645M and Nvidia GT650M, do these three make a huge difference? Can I still play Fifa13 on high settings or any other games which requires high settings?
*
Yes, there is quite a big difference between GT650M, GT645M, and GT635M.
But FIFA13 is not GPU demanding laugh.gif So all three GPU can handle it at the highest setting.
As for other games which you may play in the future, it really depends on how GPU demanding they are going to be smile.gif
Obviously, the more powerful a GPU you buy now, the more likely it is going to be future proof smile.gif
Supposed you decide to play Far Cry 3, at 1366x768 resolution, high setting, only GT650M will cut it (around 30 fps I think).

2. How much ram does i5-3317u support? Because when i see the specs it says something about 3GB cache memory and i dont know what does it means.
5. I actually considered MBA and MBP as well but im afraid that office files from other students cant be open at my mac. Will there be such problems?
*
QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Jan 5 2013, 12:05 PM)
2. I think you should be more worried about how many RAM slots there are within an ultrabook since some only have one slot iinm... and some have their RAM soldered (thus irremovable) =.=
5. Yeah, there will be program and hardware incompatibility problems, unless if all your friends are using Macs...
*
2. The cache memory is built in memory in the chipset, has nothing to do with the RAM that we normally talk about. TJ is right, pay attention to RAM slot available if you intend to upgrade RAM.

5. If you run into a Apple aficionados, they will tell you MBA / MBP can run Windows through BootCamp laugh.gif

3. FL Studio need CPU power to do encoding hmm.gif Also more RAM is better. You could upgrade aftermarket at ~ RM80 for a 4G stick. HDD capacity is cheap nowadays, you could arrange with re-seller to upgrade from 500G to 1TB for ~ RM100 without voiding warranty of the laptop.

Hi,

I need suggestion on ultrabook. Do I need to go i 7? or just i 5 will do?

Brand: any.
Budget: below 5k.
Usage:  office work.
weight: light (need to carry everywhere)
screen: below 14'
Requirements: SSD.
*
With your budget, you could max out to i7. But i7-3517U is also only 2 core like i5-3317U, and for office work i5-3317U is enough. The problem is if you want a larger capacity SSD (256G) direct from factory, it usually come with i7 (unless you go Dell, which you could customise spec).

For work, if minimum down time is important, go with Dell since they offer next business day on site warranty support service.

Some ultrabook for you to consider:
Acer
Aspire S5-391-53314G12, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3499[1.2kg], W7HP
Aspire S7-391-53314G12, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920x1080; touch)@RM3799, 4GB, W8

Asus
UX31A-R4005H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM3499[1.3kg], 4GB, W8
UX31A-R4003H, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 256GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM4599[1.3kg], 4GB, W8

Dell
XPS12, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920x1080)touch screen@RM3899[1.52kg], 4GB, W8, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, build-in battery, no ODD
XPS12, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 256GB SSD + (1920x1080)touch screen@RM4999[1.52kg], 8GB, W8, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, build-in battery, no ODD
XPS13, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3299[1.36kg], 4GB, W8, backlit
XPS13, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 256GB SSD@RM3999[1.36kg], 8GB, W8, backlit
XPS13, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 256GB SSD@RM4399[1.36kg], 8GB, W8, backlit

HP
Envy SpectreXT 13-2106TU, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3399[1.39kg], 4GB, W8,backlit keyboard

Samsung
9 series NP900X3C, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1600x900)@RM4999[1.16kg], 4GB, W8

Sony
Vaio SVT13126CV, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3099[1.66kg], 4GB, W8; color: silver; Vaio carrying case

Toshiba
Portégé Z930-2002, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3399[1.12kg], W7HP, 6GB, 3 years warranty; W8@RM3799
Portégé Z930-2005 i7-3667U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM4899[1.12kg], W7HP, 6GB, 3 years local on-site warranty, free notebook sleeves

Personally, I would go for Dell XPS13, i5, 256G SSD, upgrade warranty to 3 years. Peace of mind, with relatively good keyboard among ultrabook, quite solid build.

S56CM-XX090H i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M + 24GB mSATA + 500GB@RM2199[2.3kg], 2GB, W8; color: black
N56VZ-S3151H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT650M@RM2799[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 750GB, W8; color: black

What is "medium" gaming? laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif Game titles, game titles, give us game titles as example smile.gif
Obviuosly N56VZ is better, if your budget allow.
But the GT635M in S56CM can handle lots of games in 1366x768 (HD) resolution.

Yup, brands like to stick glossy screen in cheap consumer line laptops  sweat.gif

Asus Malaysia don't offer customisation options. Take it or leave it tongue.gif You can do after market upgrade youself for RAM, HDD to SSD without voiding warranty  laugh.gif

The GT650M is ~ 20-40% faster than the HD7730M, depends on game titles / setting  tongue.gif

Good warranty service, Dell or Lenovo.

Dell
Inspiron 14z, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1799[1.87kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, *no VGA port, OD

Lenovo

Make sure you upgrade warranty to 3 years on site.
External USB 2.0 DVDRW is ~ RM120.

Tq Nexus! Price for lenovo S400 still negotiable? How much is reasonable? N any ideas the price for 3 years on site warranty?
