Hi I'm new here so I hope I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm currently finding a new laptop to replace my old dell because of graphic card issues. I'm going to study in kl but I'm buying the laptop in Penang so I hope the warranty is good. I'm going for the medicine course so I hope the laptop will be able to run any required programs and last long.

Brands: Toshiba, asus, dell. ( Is HP good in terms of quality and warranty? If yes then I don't mind buying a HP laptop)

Screen: I would prefer a 14 inch or 15 inch. As for the resolution, is full hd going to help a lot? As in increasing the space for reading and some movies.

Usage: Mostly for assignments so I won't buy a laptop that is too bulky. Going to watch movies with it and most probably a little of dota 2.

Budget: 3.5k or less.

Strictly no Y580 as it is too heavy and I heard there is a lot of heat issues. I looked through the Inspiron 15 special edition but the design is kinda ugly no offense. An ultrabook is okay as well. I just hope that there will be USB 3.0 slots for me.

You are a conflicting person  laugh.gif  icon_rolleyes.gif
If you want good warranty service, then you have to look at Dell (on site), Lenovo (on site), HP (SC).
If you think Y580 (which is 15") is heavy, then you should not think about 15" in general.
FHD (1920x1080) give you lots more work space compared to HD (1366x768). For movie, if you are watching 1080p, then you need FHD to take full advantage, otherwise 720p could be handled by HD screen. If you want FHD screen, but don't want Y580 or Inspiron 15SE, then there is nothing else within your budget  laugh.gif (unless you go for Asus ultrabook, but Asus Malaysia warranty service is bad).
Y580 run a bit warm, nothing that could not be solved by a cheap / good cooling pad (>RM100).
All current gen laptop has USB 3.0.
If you only play dota 2, even Intel HD 4000 could handle it.

Dell
Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8
Inspiron 14z, i5-3317U + AMD HD7570M + 32GB SSD + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2449[1.87kg], 4GB, W8 *no VGA port, OD
XPS 14, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT630M + 32GB mSATA+ 500GB(5400rpm) HDD + (1600x900)@RM3749[2.1kg], 4GB, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, W8

HP
Envy4-1111TX, i5-3317U + AMD HD7670M + [32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)]@RM2599[Beats][1.75kg], 4GB, W8

Lenovo
Y400, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M@RM2799, 4GB, 500GB, W8, 120wPSU, swappable ODD
Y480, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M (GDDR5) @RM2599 [JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, freeDOS
Y480, i7-3610QM + Nvidia GT650(GDDR5)@RM2699[JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, W7HB
S400, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2099[1.8kg], 4GB, W7HB; W8@RM2199

If you go for Dell / Lenovo, extend warranty to 3 year on site. None of the above

Hehe guess my budget is too tight. I heard some bad reviews on y580 by a salesman at gadget zone. He said that out of 7 units sold there's already 4 units given back for repair due to overheat.

Is n56vz a good choice for me or should I stick to ultrabook?

Hi, i have found few models and i would hope that sifus can suggest me which 1 is better. I also have some questions to ask hehe.

(Price and specs copied from another post in forum)
1. [Ultrabook] UX31A-R4005H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM3499[1.3kg], 4GB, W8
2. [Ultrabook] XPS13, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3299[1.36kg], 4GB, W8, backlit
3. [Ultrabook] Envy SpectreXT 13-2106TU, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3399[1.39kg], 4GB, W8,backlit keyboard
4. [Ultrabook] Vaio SVT13126CV, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3099[1.66kg], 4GB, W8; color: silver; Vaio carrying case
5. [Ultrabook]XPS 14, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT630M + 32GB mSATA+ 500GB(5400rpm) HDD + (1600x900)@RM3749[2.1kg], 4GB, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, W8

I'm going for uni so i hope to get something that is light and easy to bring around. Below are a few questions:

1. Does UX31A-R4005H comes with a IPS screen or its just a normal FHD screen? Because i have seen few people selling it and says that it is only normal FHD. Does it comes with backlit keyboard as well?

2. How much ram does i5-3317u support? Because when i see the specs it says something about 3GB cache memory and i dont know what does it means.

3. Is Sony VAIO good in terms of build quality and warranty? Because from what i see the pricing of Sony VAIO is getting cheaper compare to brands like ASUS.

4. Which of the top 5 models are recommended if i will only be using it for assignments and maybe some movie? Is there any other model of ultrabook recommended with about the same price range?

5. I actually considered MBA and MBP as well but im afraid that office files from other students cant be open at my mac. Will there be such problems?
