hey guys. suddenly interested in this RC heli hobby. what you guys reckon a beginner buy? i've heard that more expensive ones with powerful motors are easier to fly due to their better power-to-weight ratio.

also, are gas-powered RC helis still available? might be interested in those too.

budget 4-5k. and my aim is to build a nice heli with Airwolf fuselage (with all the bells and whistles like retractable landing gear, etc). hope sifu can shed some light on what to get and the recommended shops. biggrin.gif
i've so far heard of Hobbysportz Paradigm Mall and RC Smart Amcorp Mall. I'm from PJ area myself btw.

cheers.

with a budget of 4-5k ... u can start with a good radio ... highly recommend the futaba 8FG ~ 1.3k
then decide on your choice of helis

within your budget
u can either buy new or 2nd hand ... IC powered or electric

bigger is better coz its is less sensitive and handles wind better
bigger is oso much more expensive ... unless u go the IC way
IC = internal combustion .. u will need to know how to tune the engine well in order for it to operate well
bad tuning normally results in poor power and engine shut down during flight

i myself is an electric guy so cannot help u in the IC dept ...
electric is just plug and play
but batteries has higher cost in the long run

your remaining 2k+ ... (if u choose to go the electric way)
i would choose either a 450 size to be cost effective
a decent 450 would be slightly less than 1k
300-400 for budget batts and charger (high end chargers cost much more)
scale body apprx 300-700 depending on your choice
thats almost 2k spent

since u are starting from nothing ... and no RC experience with helis
i suggest u keep the remaining balance of your budget for repairs and parts

get a simulator to practice ... this way u can learn alot while crashing less
then practice and practice more
when u feel confident enuff ... put the scale body onto the heli

good luck !!!

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum but have already flown several 4 ch FP helis  like V911, mjx f45, v929 etc. Im starting to go with multirotors route, maybe aerial photography and FPV next.

Recently I just ordered Walkera UFO MX400S (RTF and its just look sleek and nice). Anyone here have flown and deal with this model before? Any advice or tip would be very helpful since there are not many reviews or videos about this model on the internet. Thanks
*
my experience with walkera is lack of local support for parts
and the parts are not cheap at all

most of my multirotors are kit or scratch build based and i add on the power system and electronics myself
depending on what u wanna do ...

i have not been to hobbysportz in a long time ... but not cheap la i know
rcsmart may have more choices ... and maybe slightly better prices

i get most of my rc stuff online .. even my batteries
now there is a very competitive local seller ... myrccorner.com.my ... i think
his 450 heli and lipo batts are price very competitively
dunno if he sells radio (8FG) ..

yes i know it but f-46 is too big for me.. very difficult to control for newbie like me..  biggrin.gif  thats why i want to buy v911 for flying small heli..
*
actually u may be sirprised that f46 is much easier to control .. compared to the 911
the only pro for 911 is its more crash resistant cool2.gif

for sure?? have u try both of it??
*
i have flown 911 .. similar size CP helis ... 250 size helis .. 450 size helis .. 600 size helis
just telling u from experience ... hehehe

i have even tried flying the 911 into wall (not so hard la) to see how crash resistant it was
the result ... i did not even have to go pick it up .. i just throttled up and flew it again

911 can be found for around rm100 or less and comes with 2 batteries and charger and radio
no big $ there ... just buy and fly it la

Its ok to slow down.... eventually one day people will slow down... in the first thread... v1... year 2010 that was mr daddoo exact words for me...heheh...still remember it... now..unfortunately...he ate his own word but he did a good job...at least he survive for almost 3 years...
*
yaa ... me slowing down kow kow now
only do rc work or fly when mood really comes ... or coz wanna go yumcha with the gang ... hahaha

QUOTE(zeroglyph @ Apr 12 2013, 11:31 AM)
haha...i only see 2 reason why one would slow down and maybe quit:
1. money
2. boredom

my 2 cents on it is to take slow. the slower you progress the longer this hobby will last and the least likely you get bored with it. if you decide to go hardcore from the beginning, you'll probably stop before 3 years(due to money spent or boredom).  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
it is coming to 4yrs for me
thing for me is ... boredom comes when there is no challenge or revolutionary stuff to play with
then again .. if u say the $ part ... u cannot compare a rm10k radio with a rm200 radio laa .. hahaha

QUOTE(zamorin @ Apr 22 2013, 09:48 AM)
zeroglyph,

I think the problem I have with LOS flying is that I'm not good at orientation and unless you are just going forward (away from you) it is never a constant. I find that particularly hard.

It is also easier to launch it with my hands than from the floor. That only makes the helicopter spin around on the ground. I more or less rectified it as there was a strand of hair stuck in between the tail rotor and it couldn't spin as it should causing the whole helicopter to spin. It still spins but it can be controlled better.

That's why I thought FPV flying maybe a better choice and I can get an AR Drone for about $1100+.
infrasonic,

Actually, I've been trying for more than 3 months (maybe 10 days flight of 20 min each). I've crashed it more than 20 times per flight (in that short time it is in the air: 5 to 15 seconds). The stabilizer bar broke after it got entangled with my blanket.I thought this will be marginally more difficult than r/c cars but the difference is significant.

babyandy,

Thanks a lot bro. I'll sure check out the link for any tips and locate a flying field with some experts near my house.
BTW I also tried/use an android based simulator.
*
LOS orientation experience can only be gained thru practice (whether SIMULATOR or real life)
learn the hard way ... master each orientation b4 moving on to the next ... tail in ... side in ... the other side in ... then nose in
always try to find someone to fly with .. flying alone is boring and one of the fastest way to kill your interest in this
AR DRONE is only good for short distance as it is wifi operated using I/ANDROID devices and will not go far ... u will need proper RC stuff as it will go out of range very quickly when u FPV .. it is a very stable flyer though
it preferred to use a SIMULATOR with a proper radio size controller ... that way u get the "feel" of the stick instead of sliding around the screen on the phone

need a little verification here in regards to FPV flights. the basic things you would need for this would be:
1. a camera(duh!): this needs to be able to output the video to a screen (like tv or something). any camera will do as long as it can output the recorded video(i.e: what it sees).
2. a video tx: this will basically take the video output from the cam and transmit it wirelessly
3. a video rx: the will receive the signal from the tx and in turn, output it to something else
4. display unit: this will receive the video from the video rx and display it. can be either an LCD unit, a goggle or whatever that can receive the signal.

am i getting this correctly? obviously the interfaces which these devices connects to each other needs to be considered, right? not likely it'll be standardized.
*
that is basically what u need ...
choice is video transmission is important .. eg if u flying u are using 2.4 obviously u will not wanna use 2.4 as video
try to place vtx and rc rx as far apart as possible to avoid interference

try to get someone to spot for u on the 1st few flight to avoid mishaps

the rest u will figure out as u go by .. hehehe

edit ... i use servo connectors to connect between these video devices
u will only need 3 wires (video power & ground) if u do not need audio which u prolly wont coz all u will hear is the motor sound unless u power off and just glide high up

depending on which vtx u choose
typically .. the specs includes weight
eg. this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/_...ransmitter.html
weighs 25gm ... but thats without antenna and wires attached laa

some like this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/_...amera_NTSC.html
comes in a casing ... that casing oso acts as heatsink
but the casing is super heavy ... can be removed .. u will need to make a lighter fin type heatsink for it la

honey bee ... i think still able laa
provided u are not expecting crazy range la
a 200mW 5.8 system should be good (with the proper antennas of coz)
