Besides networking, has nobody tried rigzone's career center website page which list a number of positions available within malaysia and overseas?

I used it to snag my previous position but as they say, networking and building a good work relations with everybody is very important in moving around the OnG industry.

Most recruiters in Rigzone want experienced people only. sad.gif

You can start reading the specifications and datasheet that AFB and compare it against technical data submitted by vendors. You will stumble upon unfamiliar things and that's when your Internet will become handy. Google up for things in the specifications and datasheet that you don't know. This will leads to one thing to another. While you are at it, get familiar with PTS and DEP (which indirectly related to IEC, BS and etc.). If you can't find the information that you wish to get, walk-up to your lead and ask.

Also, you can always ask your vendor for better explanation.

If you have a chance to go to yard whether during construction or commissioning, by all means make yourself available. You'll get better picture.

I think that is the only way for you to pick-up the technical knowledge.

I am not working as Client (I wish I am) but from what I heard from my friends (who are working in Pet), you will not be called again at least for a good one year. I don't know this for sure, it is what I've been told.

Not very sure about the OnG job market in malaysia since my experiences are overseas and in singapore. I skipped malaysia and focused more on the overseas market since their daily contract rates are better, exposure to a non-malaysian work environment and less affirmative action policies.

Do you mind which EPCC company are you currently working with and position?

First of all, single line diagram is the most important thing to study. Do you research on all the instruments, cable, etc etc on the line list. This way, you, know where is the line going, what is does, and why izit there in the first place.

2nd of all, do not stick to electrical discipline. Try to get knowledge on other discipline as well ; mechanical, structure, and piping. By getting all the discipline together, you will have a clearer picture and and upper hand in dealing with nuisance client who try to "show off" their knowledge.

Finally, be resourceful. I reckon if you ask some experience colleagues for an answer, do counter check their answer. Sometimes, they might just BS you cos they know or someone told them. But in depth, they don't understand "why" and "how".

Do the above, you will become a better employee.

I am no longer working in singapore anymore. I am now stationed in osaka japan.

Singapore's work culture in generally is being hardworking and putting long hours to have the appearance of being hardworking when you can actually have nothing much to do but what to give a good impression to your superiors. That scenario usually applys for "chinaman" companies.

MNC's or clients on the other hand prefer people who can work independently, have good time management skills and are hungry for self-improvement.

Compared to malaysia, especially the government sector or GLC companies. Singapore is a world apart, they are rather prompt when it comes to customer service and they are efficient.

Malaysia on ther other hand fails miserable in this regard. I recently had an enquirer to one of the goverment departments and their telephone lines where always busy, they had no e-mail to correspond and they dont take their job seriously. I was very frustrated, and all because i just wanted to make an enquirer.

I recently came back from australia and i may in the future move there since i've been around and malaysia is disappointing to say the least and i see little chance of improvement in the near future.
