My Jack Russell is hell of a crazee fella. Hyperactive 24-7!! Always jumping up and down, follows whoever wherever they go(I think for robbers too). Lol. And he likes to catch lizards, cockroaches and tears them into halves. But it's really a nice dog. So sad I've to let it go. Check out my signature.

Hello everyone ~ I'm thinking of getting a dog as a companion. I'm often bored and left alone at home. I'm considering to get a Jack Rusell but, before I get one, I wish to know more and decide what's best for me. I read that this breed shed a lot, is it possible for me to minimise its shedding? Is it suitable to be left outside(compound)? I don't think my parents will let it in, they won't even let me touch a dog when I was younger! Maybe I'll get him a kennel. Is it easy to be trained? It doesn't really matters as I have plenty of time. Finally, will it bark very much? I'm afraid that neighbours might complain but their dogs are noisy too... TQ!

Hie mskven, My dog is about 1 and a half years old now. My sis brought it back from KL for me. He likes to follow people around and he's very adventurous. When I left him inside the house alone, he'll start to cry and bark. But when there's people at home, he won't even make a single noise at all. He'll just follow you wherever you wanna go and wants to play with you all day. If you just ignore him, he'll just sleep quietly. Hmph, sorry I'm not very experienced with my dog cause I only took care of him for a month now. My sis went to UK and there's no one to take care of him now. My parents have to work and I've to attend college so I need to sell him. He's really a good dog.

I'm considering to get a Jack Rusell but, before I get one, I wish to know more and decide what's best for me. jrt is not recommended for a 1st time doggie owner as its a really destructive doggie if not trained properlyI read that this breed shed a lot, is it possible for me to minimise its shedding? Is it suitable to be left outside(compound)? I don't think my parents will let it in, they won't even let me touch a dog when I was younger! Maybe I'll get him a kennel. yes they shed more than ur regular doggie, they might escape ur yard if left outside, jrts are not meant to be caged or chained, so only supervised outdoor activities for jrtsIs it easy to be trained? It doesn't really matters as I have plenty of time. Finally, will it bark very much? I'm afraid that neighbours might complain but their dogs are noisy too... jrts are easily trained as they are smart...but because they are too smart, they tend to challenge their owner & hence will make em a real problem in ur hse. jrts will bark at almost every movin objects in & out of ur hse...fr a flyin mosquitoe to the regular jogger outside ur hse...ur neighbours WILL surely complain...most jrts owners' neighbours complain...hahahaTQ! so i would suggest u to really & fully understand this breed before jumpin into conclusion of gettin one...dont get one because u feel like gettin one...its not as easy as it seems ownin a jrt...u can ask every jrt owner here, jrts are very difficult to handle if ur not well prepared... read & study more on this breed, analyst whether this breed really suit ur lifestyle. as jrts need lotsa lotsa lotsa lotsa exercise, they burn lotsa lotsa lotsa lotsa calories & u'l be needin to spend lotsa lotsa lotsa lotsa time with em... this is not to restrict u from gettin a jrt but jz a reminder & advice from a jrt owner... jz my 2 cents... cheers This post has been edited by vinoviruz: May 3 2008, 11:26 AM

JRTs tend to get into a lot of trouble and hence are not suited to be left outside unless your compound is properly fenced/ barricaded to prevent them from running onto the road. If you willing to spend a lot of time with a JRT, then a JRT can be trained to do wonders. Training - they are fast learners but they get bored easily. Really depends on how much time you are willing to put in and how you motivate your dog. Barking can be kept to a minimum if your correction is fair and consistent. You may wish to consider doggysitting a JRT for a few days just to get an idea of whether you are up to it or not. Just to give you a flavour, here's what a JRT can get up to!

Thanks for the replies. I'm still considering and learning about dogs. I will only get one after I really understand them. My house is fenced, they won't jump out, will they? I'm willing to spend time and bringing it out for some jogging/walking, the reason I wanted a dog is to accompany me, after all. I'll still do some research before deciding..thanks!

Fenced? lol.. they will get it. trust me.. my jack does that. even if you put a 4 feet high fence, if they feel that they need to jump out no matter what, they will do it. if you're the stay at home type, jrt is not recommended

That's hyper... After much researching, I found that JRT is really suitable to be a companion. But I think I can't have it. My compound doesn't have grass for it to dig and my mum certainly will get mad if her plants are destroyed. Maybe I'll have one in the future, when I've all it needs~! Meanwhile..I'm still searching for a dog that I'm able to take good care of.
