Your best options are still from Sony/SE. If u insist, maybe 2nd hand galaxy ace plus. Or an old not so good conditioned HTC desire HD. 4.3" screen.

-Motorola atrix
-Sony xperia sola / go / P
-Huawei ascend P1 (but screen easy to break when fall)
-Samsung galaxy S advance

Other OS:
-Nokia lumia 800 / N9. N9 probably can flash to Android, runs on Meego by default.

Maybe can also wait for Nokia Lumia 920, for now is 808 pureview.

Follow what XeactorZ said, more worth it than HTC at that price. If u still want HTC, can consider used HTC sensation / incredible S / desire HD / one V. Decent enough, though not the best bang for the buck.

HTC one V camera quite good, looks like on par with sola/u or better.

Ya, xperia U dun have card slot but won't really affect performance. RAM is the 1 will affect performance when it's full.

I strongly suggest SE xperia pro. Physical qwerty keyboard + 8mp camera. Only prob is it only has a single core processor.

Those in your list, xperia U is the best choice. Dual core. To be safe with the memory, get xperia sola. Dual core also.

Another option is Motorola atrix. 1GB RAM !! Some places selling for RM7xx ori with free lap dock. But 1 very big prob is that it's not gonna get offical ICS update, only unofficial got.

Lumia 800 / 710 suits her well. Otherwise, SE xperia pro. Only RM7xx, got physical qwerty keyboard and 8mp cam. Very worth it. Ace plus totally not worth it.

Samsung service centre better. Battery life both should be okay. Acro S will probably get JB.
I vote acro S, got the waterproof dustproof thing and better cam than g.nexus.

S3 should be compared with iphone 5. So to ans your question, S3 better.

Gnexus is good enough.

Already got jelly bean and many more future updates to come. Since it's a google phone.

Any 1 of these should do fine. Best spec is one X, but also the most expensive.
Not sure, I guess it's around 1.2k.
Huawei is reliable, service not sure. Ya u are right, many companies also got bad service. Sony...HTC..Nokia also got bad service. Only Apple and Samsung looks fine for now.

For Android, the worthy ones for the price are....

-Huawei ascend P1
-Sony xperia P / sola / go / U
-Motorola atrix(stuck in gingerbread, unless u flash to unofficial ICS)
-SE xperia pro (single core Android so will lag more than the others above)

Single core ANDROID will lag . But jellybean update will improve it.

I like the camera very much. OS-wise, it's smooth. But compared to Android, it feels restricted. Android got more functions. I dunno how to explain it. 1 example is I can't attach files in LYN and I still can't find a way to post pics in LYN directly from the phone itself. Upload to image hostings sites then can. Another 1 is I'm not even sure if there's a way to save messages as draft, will check on that . Android loses out in smoothness, but I'm not sure how smooth Jellybean will bring it to.

Some other stuff(that doesn't bother me) would be, windows phone is more socially integrated than android. But less apps/games and dun have mass storage, compared to Android.

So it depends on u yourself. For me, what I mainly want in a phone is good camera. Other parts as long as it can do what I really need, I'll be fine with it.

WP good for social network. Can go for Nokia lumia 610 ori, or lumia 710 AP. Lumia 710 much better though.

Otherwise, can go for Android. Instagram all that is part of social network right? WP still dun have. If Android can consider SE xperia mini / mini pro, or AP set xperia pro / ray. More apps, but just ok in the main social network like fb.

Usually battery life not much difference. Number of apps, Android surely got more.
To solve battery prob, I suggest u to follow wat x132755 said.

Now mid-end Android got dual core and jelly bean update sure improve the lag issue. Your best choice is Huawei ascend P1, but dunno will get Jellybean or not. Your next choice is Sony xperia P, but batt life not so good. So I suggest Samsung galaxy S advance or Sony xperia go.
