Ive took the time out to explain briefly what exactly is a kernel.

Many people use and experiment with kernels, without even knowing or understanding what a kernel is, if you have a smartphone you are definitely using a kernel of some sort.

In smartphones the kernel is the BOSS of the smartphones operating system.
It is a bridge between your applications and the actual data processing done at the phones hardware level.

What is the phones hardware? - CPU, Memory, and the phone itself.

The kernels job is to manage the system resources between the hardware and software and to allow other programs to run and use these resources, other programs could be like for example, google search, google maps, email client, you know the built in programs you get with your smartphone.

The kernel takes responsibility for deciding at any point which of the running apps should be allocated to the processor or processors each of which can usually run only one program or app at a time.

The phones memory is used to store both program instructions and data and both have to be present in the memory in order for the app or program to execute.
Often multiple programs or apps will want to access memory, often demanding more memory than the phone has available.
The kernel is responsible for deciding which memory each process can use and working out what to do when not enough is available.

The kernel also controls the input and output signals of your phone, such as keyboard, touchscreen, display, memory cards, etc.
The kernel allocates request from apps to perform input/output actions on your phone, example being using the touchscreen, opening an app and interacting both ways with it, and reading and writing to the sd cards etc...
