AC Milan are ready to revive their attempts to sign Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani after releasing former Arsenal ace Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer. The Italian giants pulled the plug on talks to extend the out-of-contract Frenchman's San Siro stay after he failed to agree terms on a new two-year deal.
But Milan boss Massimiliano Allergri is eager to welcome back unsettled Anfield star Aquilani as Flamini's replacement.
The Italy international spent last season on loan at the Serie A side but returns to Merseyside next month to begin pre-season training with boss Brendan Rodgers. Although the 27-year-old could yet have a future at Liverpool, Milan are willing to wait until the end of the summer transfer window in their bid to re-sign Aquilani on a permanent basis.
'The deadline has passed and we told his lawyer we won't be waiting any more,' Milan vice president Galliani told Sky Sport Italia, speaking of Flamini's exit. 'We'll bring in a new midfielder by August 31.
'It could be Alberto Aquilani or someone else, as he is a Liverpool player and we're not in talks with them.'
Aquilani, whose Liverpool deal runs until 2014, cost the Reds £17million in 2010 from Roma. But after an injury-hit first season at Anfield he was sent out on loan to Fiorentina before joining Milan on a short-term deal. Milan, meanwhile, have agreed deals to sign Chievo defender Francesco Acerbi and Genoa’s Guinea midfielder Kevin Constant. There was bad news for midfielder Sulley Muntari, however, who faces six months on the sidelines after undergoing knee ligament damage surgery.
