The mashing sound on a manual tranny happens when you engage reverse while the whole transmission is still rotating forward under its own momentum.

So the reverse gear for the CVT is similar to that of a normal auto tranny?

I've seen people shifting from D to R even before the car has completely stopped Dunno if that will wear the tranny out quickly.
