That is abnormal. Even mine with WiFi off but 3G always on , background actively updating yahoo mails, gmails, some newsfeed my battery drop is most 3-4 % only. If 3g/WiFi off usually it should drop most 1-2 % only
Check using betterbatterystats what is waking up your phone. Also use CPUspy to see when phone is idle not active, how much deepsleep mode is it on
Example lastnight mine over 7+ close to 8 hours, deepsleep is 90% and over this 7-8 hour period , I was using browser 17 % of the time in the beginning , yet my deepsleep can hit 90 %. If I leave it completely idle my ddep sleep will usually hit up to 95-98 %
And I don't use setcpu anymore in ICS rom. Only Juice Defender Ultimate as a battery usage control aid

No need to flash rom - 20 % is abnormal ; he must have a lot of apps running in background without his knowledge
Root it is sufficient to find out causes

Officially rooting will void warranty. But my past 5X experience in past 3 years sending in rooted /flash rom phones -tablets to Samsung Service Center warranty still provided FOC. They do not bother . But they still reserve their rights to void warranty

Tap call - you will get a call back answer it and a recorded message giving you the 4 digit password. The message will be repeated twice

Tested first the XXLR1 modem ( from Taiwan ICS version ) ; seems much better than XXLPT of German ICS. Inside my house on Maxis , my usual download speeds averages 1000-1200 kbps. I am now getting in region of 2K
My download of the Taiwan rom broke off at the 85 % mark ; now redownloading again !

No FC at all - has been using it daily - my main rom , while in between has been testing the various Touchwiz based ICS
Infact all the ICS roms I have tested no FC at all

Those who has flash the Taiwan LPF rom through mobile Odin do note the new bootloader is not flash. Does it matter? I don't think so as bootloader function is just to load the OS
If you want the new bootloader than use Odin in PC to flash the bootloader tar file only

Extract the zip to tar format and use mobile Odin to flash

You can use cwm app but limited function cannot do backup/restore. You can use it to boot to recovery n download mode,flash kernel only
Just test it yourself. No need even to ask such question here

Use my backuppro to backup apps. If your phone not rooted all apps data not backup n you need restore app one by one. If phone rooted apps plus data restore automatically
use SMS backup & restore to backup n restore SMS. Thiscfree app works across all os from eclair to ics
backup your contacts n calendar to Gmail

Or root first n than use titanium backup all apps plus data

The problem with him his phone not rooted. So he cannot even do a nandroid backup. So he cannot use app extractor
I never test this app before so unable to comments but based on review it works

If you want be doubly sure that is no wipe just download any of the no wipe prerooted Rom here. Not necessary must use spore rom
