Where to Download Absinthe 2.0

For those who are already on a tethered jailbreak on 5.1.1 (iPhone 4, 3Gs etc), then all you need is to install a package (via Cydia) which has been released by the iPhone Dev-Team called Rocky Racoon (cool name) which will untether your idevices. So there is no need to restore the iPhone to 5.1.1 and run absinthe 2.0

iOS 5.0.1 Information

The latest redsn0w version 0.9.10b8 can also be used to jailbreak iPhone 4S on 5.0.1

Since the Absinthe tool uses the backup and restore injection method, it is probably a good option to backup and restore your iPhone 4s first (and set it up as a new phone) before running the Absinthe program. UNLOCKING

This only applies for those who are on Locked Sets (usually those who bought from shops where the dealer brought in Locked Sets, mostly AT&T sets from the US).

Unlocking and Jailbreaking are 2 different things. However, since you will need to jailbreak to unlock, then I suppose, it is relevant to the jailbreaking discussion.

What is Unlocking? It's a method that allows you to enable your Locked Sets to use any SimCard with your iPhone.

What is a Locked Set? iPhone sold in many countries (especially the US) are locked to a certain service provider and the iPhone will only accept that particular service provider's simcard.

How do I unlock my locked sets?

1. Software Unlock - supports some baseband (modem firmware) via ultrasn0w. Support 4.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, or 06.15.00 on the iPhone 3GS, or baseband 01.59.00 on the iPhone 4,

UPDATE: Those on the iPad Baseband 6.15.00 have a way to downgrade to the unlock-able 5.13.04

The iPhone Dev-Team (@musclenerd) has released the latest redsn0w which will enable those with the 3Gs on b[/SIZE]aseband 6.15.00 to downgrade to baseband 5.13.04 (which can be unlocked via ultrasn0w).

UPDATE: UNLOCK FOR ANY BASEBAND ON ANY FIRMWARE VERSION FOUND - This no longer works as Apple has closed the loophole.

A Chinese hacker (Locktar_Sun) has managed to find an exploit that can UNLOCK any jailbroken iPhone on any firmware and on any baseband. This has been confirmed as legit by Musclenerd. Please follow the guide from the link below

2. Hardware Unlock - via Gevey Sim (Supports the iPhone 4 on baseband higher than 01.59.00)
UPDATE: There are reports that the latest Gevey Ultra will support iOS5.x BUT, you will need to PRESERVE the 4.10.x baseband. We are not sure if a preserve baseband lower than 4.10.x on iOS5.x will be supported or not.
UPDATE 2: There are confirmed reports and reviews of hardware unlock solutions for both the iPhone 4 on iOS 5.0.1 with baseband 4.11.08 AND the iPhone 4s.

What happens if I'm not on those baseband mentioned

1. For the 3Gs, you can install the iPad baseband (6.15.00) but there is no way back from this baseband. This baseband has been reported to introduce issues with notifications, Location Services and basically killing your GPS. Your choice.

Apple has come out with a new firmware, can I upgrade?

Be very very very very very very (I cannot emphasize this enough) careful about upgrading. You Must Preserve Your Baseband or your will lose your unlock. The only way to preserve your baseband is via creating a Custom Firmware using either Redsn0w/Sn0wbreeze (Windows) or Redsn0w/PwnageTool (Mac)

Please follow the tutorial from the link below on how to Jailbreak AND Preserve your baseband (including the iPad 6.15.00 baseband for the 3Gs).

If you are on a locked set, before proceeding with changing anything with your iPhone, post your iPhone details and ask our members opinion. You really do not want to turn your iPhone to an expensive iPod Touch.

DOWNGRADING

There will be times when you will decide if the latest and greatest iOS from Apple is suited for you. There will be times when your Cydia apps that you bought and can't live with is not compatible with the latest version of the iPhone firmware, and thus you've decided to downgrade the firmware

Complete Tutorial on How to Jailbreak/Downgrade/Re-Restore your iPhone (All Versions)

You CAN ONLY downgrade if you have the following

1. The unique (no you cannot use any other iphone's i.e your brother/friends/sisters etc) SHSH - SHSH is a unique identifier for each iPhone that Apple uses to verify the eligibility of the iPhone for each firmware restoration. Without an SHSH, you cannot (no matter what you do, so stop asking about it) upgrade (i.e. from 4.1 to 4.3.3), restore (from 4.3.3 to 4.3.3) or downgrade (from 4.3.5 to 4.3.3) your iPhone firmware once Apple stops signing that particular versions of the firmware.

2. If you were lucky enough (or had the good foresight) to save the SHSH of your previous firmware versions, then you can follow the guide below on how to Upgrade/Restore/Downgrade to a firmware version that Apple no Longer Signs.

3. An iPhone 4 or a 3Gs with SHSH saved either using TinyUmbrella or iFaith. Members have reported success in downgrading from 5.1 to 5.0.1 on the iPhone 4 and the 3Gs using iFaith.

The iPhone dev-team has released a new version of redsn0w that will allow you to downgrade your A5 devices from 5.1 to 5.0.1 thus enabling you to run absinthe for an untethered jailbreak. You still need to have 5.0.1 SHSH for this to work.

Now, Apple has apparently stopped the process of unique SHSH identifier for iOS 5.0, they have made it more difficult. So if Apple were to come up with iOS 5.1 and stops signing 5.0.1, even if you have saved the SHSH for 5.0.1, the guide above will not work if you were to Restore/Downgrade /Upgrade to 5.0.1 if Apple stops signing that version.

There are steps apparently using iFaith with the saved SHSH + APTickets + Custom Firmware which supposedly will allow you to do it, but I've never tried it and Google is probably a better option in this case.

Apple has released iOS 5.1

DO NOT UPGRADE TO IOS 5.1 IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR JAILBREAK

V3 has already past 2500 posts so it's time for a new version. My office has blocked any message boards and forum sites so have been using my iPhone to visit LYN so have not been able to create the new version. Will start cleaning up the 1st post with all the updated info soon.

What was the original sim? You need to know exactly what the iPhone was locked to. AT&T or O2 or Vodafone.

IClarified has come up with a video for the SAM unlock I will post the link into post #2 when I get home today.

5.0 4S can be jailbroken via absinthe and redsn0w (latest version)

5.1 cannot be jailbroken as yet

Absinthe and redsn0w should be able to jailbreak 5.0 and 5.0.1

Since apple no longer signs 5.0.1, there is no way you can upgrade to 5.0.1

On another note, pod2g says that it will take him 1-2 months to release the 5.1 jailbreak. Darn.

The latest redsn0w that recently implemented the A5 exploit was released 3 days ago and I also cannot find a guide.

I would recommend you to use Absinthe.

I have put the link for the redsn0w guide for iPhone 4s on post #1, it's not from my usual iClarified or redmondpie site but I guess it should be okay.

If you are using the 4S, you can only restore to 5.1, if you are on iPhone 4 and have saved your SHSH, you can restore to 5.0 via iFaith.

Some people say okay and had no issue. I didn't have any problem because I jailbroke the 4S after a fresh restore to 5.0.1 (which is not an option for you).

Absinthe uses the iTunes backup exploit so if you have a lot of data in the 4S, that could cause a problem (or the jailbreak can take forever).

Based on the guide for redsn0w for the 4S, it looks simple enough.

If you delete your apps, you may lose a lot of the apps data so I would not recommend it.

Yes, it will be a tethered jailbreak though and if you need to hacktivate, probably better to use sn0wbreeze as the expert mode will hacktivate the phone which will allow you to go pass the activation screen.

Then you can do SAM. But you can also do SAM by jailbreaking (tethered) on 4.3.5 as well.

Are you using a locked set?

Using absinthe on an existing 5.0.1 is known to take time. Most people do a fresh restore before running absinthe but since Apple no longer signs 5.0.1 you cannot use this option. If your backup file is huge, then most likely this is the reason while it takes a while for absinthe to jailbreak your 4s because the exploit uses the backup file ....

redsn0w is known to not being able to do activation easily for locked sets. I am not sure if sn0wbreeze works with 4s but there's no harm in trying. One thing for sure, you cannot use custom firmware via sn0wbreeze because the limera1n exploit doesn't work with A5 chip

That's because iFaith can only extract the SHSH of the current firmware that your ipHone is currently using.

Get the SHSH from TinyUmbrella which can get the SHSH from Cydia (the advance Tba --> Request SHSH from Cydia)

Make sure you know where the SHSH is kept in the local directory.

Then run iFaith to stitch the 5.0.1 SHSH (that you downloaded) with the 5.0.1 firmware to create the custom firmware

Once that is done, do the Shift + Restore via iTunes. Follow the guide in the 3rd post

Personally I would wait for 6. I see no reason to tell apple the exploit only for 5.1, I'd rather wait for 6 and use the exploit then. I think ion1c is also recommending for pod2g to hold on to the exploit for ios 6 which apple is currently testing.

That is why pod2g is reluctant to release the 5.1 jailbreak because Apple can close tha loophole just like that. If he releases it for ios 6, iOS 5.1 will be jailbroken as well.

Wimpykid provides iPhone services so it's the customers phone most likely.
