The one that i recomend all Nikon

17-55 f2.8, is the king of DX, pretty expensive for new one, but second hand one around 3.3-3.5k. One lens for all

18-105 is the one lens for all. An upgrade from your 18-55 kit lens, not exactly cheap for new one, around RM900, but then second hand one, cheapest i saw Rm650.

18-200 is the travel lens that many would like, cover from wide to long focal, abit expensive around 2k for new.

All of the above will be good for traveling, (although 17-55 is very heavy to consider for travel) 17-55 is very sharp lens, while 18-105 and 18-200 is ok sharp lens.

Added on April 12, 2012, 8:47 pmYes. All AFS lens, which can be used with your D5100.

Just look for lens with AFS in front and it will come with motor inside so you can use with your cam

Thx for ur suggestion, i will take a look..
nyway, last question, is there any third party lens that would u like to suggest?
(it kinda cheap compare to nikkon lens.. however there might be disadvantages bout it.. mind to share ur knowledge?)

Buy a reasonable one should be fine. Even though obsolete, my Eyeone Display 2 still serves me well. Got it in 2007.
I find that reply funny. It's like asking why do you need perfect vision for your eyes... It's because I like to see things correctly !
Got such a thing as 18-100?  biggrin.gif

You like to see things correctly, but yourself only. Others will probably just view it as "just another photo".

tamron 17-50 is probably what most ppl get, make sure to get the one with motor, VR or not VR doesn't matter.

But out of the 3 third party brand, i prefer Sigma the most, but its pretty exp in malaysia.

3rd party lens often facing focus problem.

So, personally if im gonna recomend my friend. Save a bit more and get Nikon

Tokina 11-16 also pretty famous, and u dont even need motor for 11-16 because its for landscape, ppl go for manual

goldfries asked me, "Why do you want to calibrate your monitor? Only you yourself are seeing if you do not do prints. Others will have to calibrate if they want to enjoy the same image quality as you do."
*

Understand that, but thing is I do product photography* which requires me to get the right color as close as possible. Even one product have many tones with slight degradation.
Frankly, I'm not a pro. But other than that, I value actual looking color on my monitors. It is more of a satisfaction while pleasing the customers to see.

I don't.

I would still prefer to have the colors balanced even though the person seeing it says it's just another photo or doesn't print photos often. If I do print or pass the pic to someone, he/she can print it with great colors, not spoilt by my 'wrong' color profile on my monitor during my PP. Right?

At least I know whoever sees my photo, the color is already up to my expectation and always consistent. It is up to the person to get his monitor to the right color. That could also means he may not care about color that much I guess.
It is the same thing as driving a car which is dirty+smudgy. Some prefer their car to be gleaming shine everyday but others don't care as much with so many scratch & dings around it. Should be up to the person right?

True. I want to get the best WB I can tweak during PP. If the monitor I'm working with has a blue/green/pink tint then when I change to another pc/laptop ...the color will be off due to WB is off ....all bcoz the LCD is off-color.

Let's see what jchue73 has from Bangkok... cause I've been to the same event with my D700... so more or less can compare what's the image quality like from the D800.

there's a new D800 ad that says "Sorry, but you're going to want to reshoot everything you've ever shot".

and they say the megapixel race died a few yrs ago.

actually the difference on screen is subtle la. . . unless you have two identical frame of shots taken with the cameras
it's only when you print a large final image that can you can appreciate the improvement the new camera gives you, even then it depends what are you shooting.

but of cos, other than the IQ, there's many new added features for the better experience of the photographers that final images can't tell.

if one just show a 2MP picture I bet no one can tell it's a D800 from a D700. It's doesn't do magic or makes a picture taken with an already amazing D700 suddenly look incomparable.

i posted once tongue.gif . . . have been busy preparing my for my final year in uni so it's been long since I last went out to shoot.
not yet own the D800, at first plan to get one this month, but with all the issue and it seems like they stop sending new stocks for now (probably dealing with all the issue reported?), I'll probably get it by June just to hope they sorted out the AF (I don't bother about the green tint, it's the AF that is worrying because I shoot lots of wide angle shots). icon_rolleyes.gif

for the IQ, I've been looking everywhere that has pro photog posted pictures with D800. But seriously, if not for the EXIF reader they could have posted pictures taken with D90, D3, D700 and I won't have a clue it's not from D800.

the one new features I like a lot is the new metering and face detection. I shoot loadsa streets photo and with D700 a lot of time it underexposed the face of the subject and by the time u realized you've missed the moment. But I have yet to hands on one though, so not sure how good is it. All I know now are from info and views of those who have used it.

but if i really bought it, it's because my hand really itchy rather than it will improve the IQ of my image. hahahaha because not like i'll print 40'' size or larger for all my pictures anyway laugh.gif
