Hi there.

Originally, wanted to get a Fox Front Suspension for my MTB but later found I'm not those DH or AM type people.

More on the road than singletrack. So wanna go for Roadbikes.

But I'm dumb in road bikes. I need some basic information.

What is the difference between Triathlon, Endurance and Sports?

What is the average price for good roadbikes? (I noticed that they are around RM4k average. Is it true? I look at Trek and Specialised)

Is roadbikes handles differently from MTB? I asked some shops and they say must buy according to my size and height because wrong on any of these, will have consequences.

Sorry if too many questions..

Very hard to find review on merida roadbikes on the net..i found only two that can be considered a good review for my bike. Although it's the review of a higher end model, the frame is still the same i believe..what differs is the components. (i may be wrong though)

Aother reviews on the merida line up

i think the correct differentiation is triathlon, endurance and race,,,

triathlon bikes are quite similar to time trial machines.. built to cheat wind with every conceivable aero tech but made to be more comfortable over distances of 180KMs unlike the short burst requirements of TTs...

endurance bikes are usually normal road bikes but geometry differs from race geometry as it is made to be ridden over long distances comfortably... usually, endurance bikes have taller head tube and less aggressive positioning on the bike...

race is the sort of bikes where it is the total opposite of endurance bikes...

examples from specialize on the 3 different platforms...

triathlon = shiv
endurance = roubaix
race = tarmac / venge

RM4k would get you a bike, but assuming you already have helmet and stuff from your MTB days.. else, that is additional hit on top of the bike...

RM6k would be a safe margin for alloy bikes..between RM7k and RM10k for carbon ones.. more if you can afford... getting the correct size is not as getting the correct fit... frame size can vary even between people who have the same physique as each person has different level of fitness and flexibility...

best to find a shop you trust and get them to measure you up for the bike you like best...

they are less known compared to the big bike makers... that is why they are trying to get into sponsorship of world tour teams to gain publicity and more brand exposure...

sure they are big as bike makers... but they are just not as well known compared to trek or specialize (which co-incidentally they own part of)

you will really have to ask yourself if you can be contempt with an aluminum bike... the giant is a good one and quite worth it for being able to bring an aluminum bike down to sub 9KG in stock form...

the wheels are 60mm tall, 404 region (in fact 2mm taller).... i think the aesthetics makes it stand out more than the 404... i can't tell much, but i speculate it will be slightly better than your current wheel since the rear wheel is a whole 1000grams in weight...

you might want to pair it with an S40 front so that it is lighter and brings a bit of contracts to both the wheels...

generally the S40 would be better at catering on both ends in terms of aero and punchy accelerations...personally, i prefer the S40s to the 60s...

not the best of examples... but this would be how a taller rear wheel gets matched to a lower front wheel...

Looks nice to pair them with different sizes..hurm..more options available making it's harder to choose...the perfect wheels will be the 303! rclxub.gif

You did not state your budget and requirements...

but a couple of examples...

Scott Speedster S30 - around RM2.5k - KH Cycle
http://www.scott-sports.com/global/en/prod...7398D6D6C06F519

Merida Race Lite 904 - around RM4k - pedalspot
http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bike/20...ce+Lite+904-com

Merida Ride Lite series - hover around RM2k - RM3k - pedalspot
http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bike/20...Road/Ride+88-24

BMC Street Racer - around RM5.5k - pedalspot
http://www.bmc-racing.com/us-en/bikes/2012...1/sr01_105.html

Fuji Roubaix / Newest series - around RM2.5k to RM4k - GH Cycle

Others would be Giant, Jamis and others which might be all over the place as they don't have a fixed appointed dealer... it is hard to recommend as you have to live with the bike at the end of the day... we can only go as far as telling you the price of bikes we've seen and the value of it to a consumer... other factors like your aesthetics taste and fitting is very personal to yourself...

with a limited budget, i would recommend you to stay away from big brands like Trek, Specialize, BMC and the likes... they are a bit more expensive being spec'ed exactly the same as lesser known brands...

Joo Ngan is a very good shop.. unfortunately i would have to say the selection is kind of limited.. i think they do mostly volt racing nowadays since they no longer carry colnago, trek or even avanti anymore...

avanti is now officially carried in by bikeplus in Tmn Tun.... as always, check out the baikbike directory to see which bike shop is near you to give them a visit...

wow... think you have to ask the bike shops and see if they have jalan.. if not, then i think you have to try ebay or amazon...

although it is essentially just a saddle connected to a wheel via a tube, it might not be cheap (as, don't think RM100 you can get it)... last i saw few years ago those japanese tiny bicycles and they were as high as RM2k...

I was seriously should i buy another bike to be used as "learner" bike? Since i keep crashing on my current bike and i worried the rear carbon folks will patah if i keep doing so on my current bike. I feel sakit hati to crash on that beautfiul bike too >< Price of new bike with tiagra gear is around at least $1000 Aud if i get the bike from the same manufacture that had same frame design as the one i am riding now (abit with lesser parts). If i get 2nd bike i also plan to use it on the trainer too.

My friend told me to use the current bike as learner/crash and later on upgrade to top spec full carbon when i was better in knowing my way round which save $ in long run.

Need some of your opinion in my delima.. Sorry for my nobbieness icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

butthead: i guess joo ngan is selling some fast forward wheels..haven't check them out, only heard from friends but I haven't search any reviews for it yet..several shops I planned to visit today are closed on sunday..demnnn~

minizian: no need to have a learner bike IMO. it's not like you are going to crash everytime you go out riding aren't you? smile.gif I guess at our level, we only need 1 bike...the one we ride for training..the one we ride on trainer..and the one we race! but maybe 1 bike, and 2 set of wheelsets to suit your ride.

Furthemore you are planning to get another bike that is very much similiar to your current beautiful bike...just for the sake of keeping the beautiful one out of scratch...it's quite pointless don't you think so? I have the urge to have a 2nd bike too...my bike is a taiwanese brand...everytime I go out for a ride, there's a bunch of other cyclists with their 'super' bikes...i know I have the cash to get exactly as theirs...but when you already rolling on the road..you know IT IS NOT ABOUT THE BIKE ALONE. my point is, having a single bike to maintain and love is the way to go to enjoy cycling..juz my 2 cents~ thumbup.gif

p/s: I started cycling maybe a bit later than you..i'm a complete noob too..hence i'm in this thread learning from each other.. laugh.gif

Dude, imagine us MTBers and how we feel about our bikes when we ride off road, especially when attempting a steep downhill path for the first time.

Personally I'll say to use the same bike until you run it down totally (not to the point of abusing it lar, so service it well) then get a new bike when you need to after that.

I'm using these tires for road on my MTB: http://bontrager.com/model/09094

fully slick, and I find no difference on either dry or wet (not just after raining, but when I had to ride through the rain as well) surfaces, but just need to watch out for loose gravel surfaces.

However if your question is more on whether to get a MTB or a road bike instead of just tires, then you should be asking what type of road conditions you're expecting (not just dry/wet surfaces). Smooth pavement or would you expect to be going through quite some bumpy roads. And if you're planning do off road rides with your bike, or just sticking to road use only.

the skinny road tires don't take too well to bumpy surfaces and surfaces with a lot of loose gravel, but you get better speed with a road bike.

you mean Joo Ngan at Ampang right? or also mean Jon Ngan's son Edwin shop @ Uptown?

Last last weekend, visited Edwin's shop, he got new big photo upstair where he took photo with Colnago boss on the Colnago limited edition bike.
He ordered d Gold Colango bike cost RM62K.

Beside Colnago (which he is one of the dealer), I can see Edwin now is focus on Willer & latest in store - MCipollini.. RB100, RB800 & Logos...

Bike Pro shop is somewhere opposite Fatty Crab king or Bake with Yen area the commercial shoplot.... it's one way... should be just easy to find
Behind the shoplot is second hand car dealer...

not exactly this... but i think you can find spin or spinergy rev-x on bbs or ebay in 2nd hand form... they won't be safe wheels to ride though since they are many many years old...

there is aerospoke in Malaysia... but i only saw those for fixies... none for geared wheels..

your friend is most prolly rite... just run with the current bike until you have enough money for a newer and even better one... jus stay away from carbon for now...

you've most probably have caused some damage to it in 1 way or another... and i doubt the fork blades are that easily damaged... forks will start breaking apart if you crash it head on with a wall... if just fall and sliding along, very minimal risk of damages other than scratched paint....

anyone crashes once in a while... if we are all worried.. we'll have 3 to 5 bikes being stacked at home waiting for shit to happen and we won't get to ride the bike that we like so much...

i meant edwin's shop in uptown... never been there for a long time since le tour last year : )

good to hear he is getting more brands in... last year i saw him mostly with volt on the road segment and quite a bit of raleigh MTBs... he did have some trek bikes, but i think they might be older units that he hasn't sell off...
